Lapland is one of those once-in-a-lifetime trips, and our 3-night, 4-day adventure to Luosto with Canterbury Travel truly exceeded our expectations. From elves and reindeer to huskies, snowmobiling, and the Northern Lights, every moment was magical. Here’s a day-by-day look at our journey — packed with tips and highlights for families considering a similar trip.

Day 1: Arrival & Lodge Magic

Our adventure began on 20th December, and from the start, Canterbury Travel made everything simple. Booking was straightforward, and while the cost might seem high at first, everything is included — excursions, meals, ski suits and boots, and all transfers.

A month before our trip, Canterbury Travel even sent backpacks for the kids, filled with a drinks bottle, snood, and a personal invitation from Santa. The boys loved them and took them on the journey — it was such a special start to the adventure.

We chose to surprise the boys on the morning of departure, which was risky, but the reactions were priceless! At the airport, Jet2 staff were in Christmas jumpers and gave the children activity sheets, while a complimentary hot meal and festive music kept everyone in the Christmas spirit.

Once in Lapland, we were greeted by elves at the airport who guided us to our coach for the 90-minute ride to our lodge, complete with Christmas music and a festive film for the kids. We stopped briefly to pick up ski suits and boots, with elves helping everyone get the right sizes.

Our lodge was perfect — quaint, authentic, and cozy, with a sauna, fully equipped kitchen, large living space, and drying room. Right outside was a small slope, and the boys spent hours sledging while we relaxed, confident they were safe and happy. Day 1 set the tone for an unforgettable trip.

Day 2: Reindeer, Santa’s Post Office & Snow Fun

Day 2 began just like the first — a walk to the restaurant through the snow, followed by another amazing buffet breakfast. The boys sledged again, enjoying the crisp winter air.

Our first adventure of the day was the Magical Reindeer Experience. After a peaceful sleigh ride through a snow-dusted forest, we gathered around a log fire with hot berry juice while the herdsmen shared stories about these incredible Arctic animals. The boys loved feeding the pregnant reindeer — a truly memorable moment.

Next, we visited Santa’s Post Office, where we met two more of the famous elves and saw how letters from children all over the world are sorted. One child even had her letter read back — so enchanting!

Lunch was a generous buffet with hot options, salads, and desserts, and then it was time for snowmobiling. Adults and children could take part, while elves entertained those waiting with snow play and snowman building.

The day ended at Mrs Claus’ Bakery, with cookie decorating, singing, and festive fun. As we returned to the resort, the Northern Lights appeared, lighting up the sky as the boys sledged, and I snapped far too many photos! Day 2 was filled with festive magic and family fun.

Day 3: Huskies & Meeting Santa

Day 3 was arguably the most magical day of all. We started with our walk to the restaurant and another fantastic buffet breakfast before boarding the coach and receiving our next clue — which led us to the Lapland Assault Course. The kids loved the outdoor activity and the fresh Arctic air.

Our next adventure was the Husky Safari, a true highlight of the trip. We met the huskies at a local farm, learned about their lives, and then experienced a thrilling sleigh ride through the snowy wilderness. The boys are still talking about it!

After the safari, we joined in the Winter Olympics, where both adults and children could participate, followed by lunch.

The climax of the day was our quest to find Santa. Snowmobiles took us deep into the woods, and suddenly — there he was! Meeting Santa was magical, creative, and utterly unforgettable. The boys were completely amazed.

We returned to the resort for a quick change into Christmas jumpers and joined a festive party. Day 3 will forever be remembered as one of the best days of our lives, for both the children and us.

Day 4: Saying Goodbye to the Magic

Sadly, Day 4 was our final day. Thankfully, check-out was relaxed — no early rush — and a shuttle coach collected our luggage from outside the lodge. We enjoyed one last buffet breakfast before setting off for the airport.

Flying back from Rovaniemi, we had the chance to stop and explore Santa Land and the Arctic Circle. It was busier and more commercial than our Canterbury Travel experience, but still enjoyable.

At the airport, Canterbury Travel colleagues were on hand to assist with check-in, making the process seamless. Jet2 again provided festive music, games, and a smooth journey home.

Looking back, this trip was unforgettable. The boys are already on their best behaviour, hoping Santa might invite them again! While the cost might seem high initially, when you factor in everything that’s included — flights, accommodation, excursions, meals, clothing, and transfers — it’s worth every penny.

For families considering Lapland, I’d highly recommend ages 5–10, when children can truly understand and enjoy the magic.
