""Slovenia is a magical and relatively undiscovered little gem of a country. The beautiful green landscape with a backdrop of snow covered mountains, and fresh clean air literally took our breath away! Not to mention the sparkling and clear, bright green, rivers and lakes.
Bled in particular reminded me of Croatia with a touch of Austria in the mix. Not surprising really as Slovenia borders both these countries.
We stayed in a lovely family run hotel which very much resembled the traditional Austrian style of buildings with wooden balconies off the bedrooms, all overlooking the beautiful landscape. We were just ten minutes walk from the small town centre, yet it felt as though we were in the countryside - so peaceful and relaxing.
For sporty people Bled has a lot to offer with canoeing, skiing in winter, hiking, horse riding, para gliding - the list goes on. We are not particularly sporty, or even young, but we just couldn’t resist horse riding in such beautiful surroundings, and even para gliding over Lake Bled. Both amazing experiences we will never forget!
After all that exercise we found plenty of really good eateries to suit all tastes. The people were very friendly and most speak excellent English as it is taught from primary school age.
As lone female travellers we felt very safe and found the local transport easy to navigate. We caught the bus from Bled to the small capital city of Ljubljana, famous for its castle and unique bridges which cross over the river as it winds its way through the city centre.
I have travelled extensively over the years and rarely re-visit the same places, but I would love to return to Slovenia and discover more delights of this alluring little country…!""
