The Beginner's Guide to Your First African Safari
Everything you need to know before your first safari – from someone who's spent months exploring Africa and has returned many times since.
Thinking About Your First Safari?
For many people, a safari sits firmly on the bucket list. It's one of those trips people spend years talking about before finally booking it, and when they do, the same questions always come up.
Which country should I choose?
Will I actually see any animals?
Will it be comfortable?
Is it safe?
The good news? A safari isn't nearly as intimidating as it sounds.
In fact, it's one of the most relaxed, rewarding and unforgettable holidays you can take.
If you're planning your first African safari, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know before you go.
Looking for a more in-depth guide? My Complete LuxuryAfrican Safari Guide covers everything from choosing the right destination and luxury lodges to safari costs, wildlife, packing tips and planning the perfect itinerary.
Why Choose a Safari?
There are very few holidays where no two days are the same.
One morning you might watch a pride of lions finishing breakfast (antelope, probably!). That afternoon, you'll find a herd of elephants crossing the track in front of your vehicle. The next day it could be a leopard relaxing in a tree or a family of giraffes wandering across the horizon.
That's what makes a safari so addictive.
Best African Safari Destinations for First-Time Visitors
There isn't a single "best" destination.
It depends on the sort of holiday you're looking for.

Will I Actually See Animals?
Yes!
However, unlike a zoo, nothing is guaranteed. The animals are wild and free to roam wherever they choose. That sense of unpredictability, the thrill of the ‘hunt’, and the adrenaline of finally spotting an animal you've been hoping to see is all part of what makes a safari so exciting.
Experienced guides know their game reserves incredibly well and are constantly communicating with other vehicles to locate wildlife. Even on quieter days, you'll almost always return to camp having seen something memorable.
What Does a Typical Day Look Like?
One of the biggest surprises for first-time visitors is how relaxed the pace is.
Plan for the day:
- Morning game drive
- Breakfast
- Time to relax
- Lunch
- Afternoon at leisure
- Evening game drive
- Dinner under the stars
You spend far more time enjoying your surroundings than sitting in a vehicle.
Are African Safaris Comfortable?
This is probably the biggest misconception. Many people still imagine sleeping bags and basic campsites when in reality, it couldn't be further from that.
Depending on your budget, you could be staying somewhere with:
- Private plunge pools
- Outdoor showers
- Gourmet dining
- Butler service
- Spa treatments
- Air-conditioned suites
- Views over a waterhole from your own verandah
A luxury safari is every bit as comfortable as a five-star beach holiday—it just comes with elephants instead of sunbeds.
Of course, there are also more adventurous options. The beauty of a safari is that it can be tailored to suit almost every style of traveller.
How Long Should a Safari Be?
For most first-time visitors I'd recommend:
3-4 nights - Perfect if you're adding a safari onto another destination.
5-7 nights - Ideal for a dedicated safari holiday.
8+ nights - Perfect if you're combining multiple parks or countries.
Should You Stay in One Lodge or Several?
If you're travelling for five nights or more, I'd usually recommend splitting your stay.
Different regions offer different landscapes and wildlife, so moving between two lodges often creates a much more varied experience.
When Is the Best Time to Go on an African Safari?
Safari is a year-round experience.
However, different seasons offer different advantages.
|
Season |
Why Go? |
|
June – October |
Dry season with excellent wildlife viewing. |
|
November – March |
Greener landscapes, baby animals and fantastic birdlife. |
|
July – October |
Best time to witness the Great Migration in Kenya and Tanzania. |
How Much Does an African Safari Cost?
An African safari holiday is rarely a cheap holiday, but it often includes far more than people expect.
Many packages include:
- Accommodation
- All meals
- Game drives
- Park fees
- Expert guides + dedicated spotters
- Airport transfers
What Should You Pack for an African Safari?
Keep it simple.
Bring:
- Neutral clothing (bold colours frighten off animals)
- A warm layer
- Comfortable shoes
- Sun cream
- Hat
- Binoculars
- Camera
My Advice for Your First Safari
If there's one thing I'd recommend, it's this: Don't spend the whole trip trying to tick animals off a list.
Basically, don’t get hung up on the Big Five. Surprisingly, my favourite animal turns out to be a hyena (who knew?!).
