Dominican Republic: Beyond the All-Inclusive
Love a beautiful hotel, but want more from your holiday than a sunbed and a buffet? The Dominican Republic offers waterfalls, diving, lively beach towns and luxury spas—but choosing the right area makes all the difference.
Punta Cana has a huge choice of resorts, with boat trips and adventures such as the caves and zip lines at Scape Park. However, don’t assume every hotel has a town on its doorstep: some locations suit organised excursions more than spontaneous evenings out.
For scuba diving and island trips, look at Bayahibe. This fishing village on the Caribbean coast offers local restaurants, access to reef and wreck diving, and boat excursions to Saona and Catalina islands.
If you enjoy heading out for dinner, Las Terrenas on the Samaná peninsula deserves a look. Beachfront restaurants and bars sit alongside beautiful coastal scenery, with excursions to El Limón waterfall and Los Haitises National Park. Samaná Bay also offers seasonal humpback whale watching, roughly January to March.
For something more active, Puerto Plata and Cabarete combine history, waterfall adventures and watersports. And for a luxury spa escape, Casa de Campo near La Romana is a standout worth exploring.
Timing matters, too. Weather differs by coast, hurricane season runs from June to November, and sea conditions and seaweed can vary.
