Why Norwegian Cruise Line Is One of the Best Cruise Lines for Solo Travellers
For many people, travelling solo is something they've always wanted to do, but taking that first step can feel daunting. Will I feel awkward eating alone? Will everyone else be in couples or families? Will I end up paying significantly more because of single supplements? These are all questions I hear regularly, and they're exactly why I think Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) deserves a special mention. As part of my six-month intensive cruise training programme, I've been learning about what makes each cruise line unique. When it comes to solo travel, NCL is fantastic.

One of the clever things about Norwegian Cruise Line is that they've recognised solo travellers aren't all looking for the same experience. Some solo guests want complete independence. Others enjoy meeting new people for dinner, drinks or shore excursions. NCL gives you the choice.
Their purpose-built Studio area is exclusively for solo travellers, with keycard access providing an extra sense of privacy and community. At its heart is a private Studio Lounge where guests can relax with complimentary tea, coffee and snacks throughout the day.
It's a natural place to strike up conversations if you want to. There’s even a noticeboard where people can arrange meet-ups and meet new people, but there's never any pressure.

A dedicated Solo Host
One feature I particularly like is that many sailings include a Solo Host.
Their role is simply to help solo guests get the most from their holiday, whether that's organising informal meet-ups, arranging group dinners or helping people find others to enjoy shows or excursions with.
You can join in as much or as little as you like.
For first-time solo travellers it means they get a warm welcome and it can make the first couple of days feel much less intimidating.

No expensive single supplement
One of the biggest barriers to solo travel is often the cost.
Many cruise lines, hotels or tour companies charge a single supplement, meaning solo travellers can end up paying almost the same as two people sharing a cabin.
Norwegian Cruise Line has addressed this by introducing dedicated Studio cabins designed specifically for one guest, without a single supplement.
These cabins are extremely popular and regularly sell out well in advance, so if you're considering travelling solo it's well worth booking early.
If you'd prefer more space, Norwegian also offer selected Ocean View and Balcony cabins for sole occupancy, although these naturally come at a higher price and aren’t located in the dedicated solo traveller part of the ship.

Dining on your own?
Another reason NCL works so well for solo travellers is its relaxed Freestyle Cruising concept. There are no fixed dining times and no expectation to share a table with strangers. If you'd like a quiet dinner with a book, that’s perfectly fine.
If you've met people during the day and want to eat together, that's just as easy.
The flexibility means every day can be different, depending on how you're feeling.

Plenty to keep you entertained
Even if you spend an afternoon exploring a destination on your own, there's never a shortage of things happening back on board.
Depending on the ship, you could spend your day:
Watching live theatre productions.
Enjoying live music or comedy.
Relaxing in the spa.
Taking part in wine tastings.
Trying speciality restaurants.
Visiting the fitness centre.
Challenging yourself on the go-karts, bowling alley or interactive games.
Whether you're naturally sociable or enjoy your own company, it's easy to create the holiday that suits you.

Is solo cruising right for you?
Solo cruising isn't just for people who don't have someone to travel with.
It's popular with friends who want their own space, family members joining a larger group, and people who simply enjoy travelling independently.
For many guests, it's also a confidence-building experience that leads to many more solo adventures.
Final thoughts
If you've been thinking about taking your first solo holiday, don't assume cruising is only for couples or large families.
Norwegian Cruise Line has invested heavily in creating an experience where solo guests feel genuinely welcomed rather than simply accommodated.
As always, the best cruise line depends on your personality, budget and what you want from your holiday. I'd be happy to help you work out whether Norwegian Cruise Line is the right fit or whether another cruise line would suit you even better.
