Sea views and slow days in Crete

7 nights from £1,639 per person based on 2 sharing

Set on a hillside above the Gulf of Mirabello, Cayo Exclusive Resort & Spa offers a polished take on a Greek island escape. The setting is hard to beat, with uninterrupted views across to Spinalonga and the surrounding coastline, while the design keeps things modern and understated. This is a place where you can fully switch off but still have some of Crete’s most interesting spots right on your doorstep, from the laid-back charm of Elounda to the historic pull of Spinalonga Island.
  • The hotel is designed for switching off without feeling isolated. There are several outdoor pools, including an infinity pool looking out towards the ocean, as well as direct access down towards Plaka Beach for a change of scene. The spa has everything you need to unwind, with an indoor pool, treatment rooms, and a calm atmosphere that makes it easy to lose track of time.
  • Step outside the hotel and you’re right in the heart of one of Crete’s most interesting corners. Plaka is just below you, a small fishing village where waterfront tavernas line the shore, while Elounda offers a livelier feel with cafés, shops, and boat trips heading out to Spinalonga. The island itself is well worth a visit, with its Venetian fortifications and layered history giving it a very different feel to the rest of the coastline.

  • Food here is simple in the best way. Local tavernas focus on fresh ingredients and traditional recipes, from grilled fish landed that morning to dishes like dakos (a type of traditional meze) topped with tomato and soft cheese. In Agios Nikolaos, you can mix things up with a few more modern spots alongside the classics, but the highlight is often a relaxed dinner by the water with no rush to leave.

  • If you want to pair relaxing days with adventure, the resort offers a whole host of activities designed to make the most of the stunning surroundings. Explore the underwater world with snorkelling or diving excursions, paddle through crystal-clear waters on a kayak, or set off on a guided nature walk to discover the local wildlife. There are also wine and olive oil tasting sessions, plus traditional Cretan cooking classes for those looking to take a taste of Greece home.
