FAQ for Villa Holidays

Everything you've always wanted to know about a villa holiday

When people start thinking about booking a villa holiday for a large family or group, the same questions come up again and again. Here are ten of the most frequently asked questions I hear

1. “Is a villa holiday really cheaper than a hotel for a big group?”

For larger or multigenerational groups, a villa holiday can be very cost‑effective. When you divide the total price of a large villa (often sleeping 8–12 people or more) between several families or across three generations, it often works out similarly to or less than multiple hotel rooms or suites. You also have the flexibility to cook in, use the barbecue and enjoy drinks by your own private pool, which can help manage your overall holiday spend.

2. “Are villa holidays suitable for young children and babies?”

Yes, family‑friendly villas are perfect for young children and babies. You can keep to your usual routines around naps and meals, there is space for toys and playtime, and you have a kitchen for preparing bottles and snacks. When I recommend a villa, I always check practical details such as whether cots and highchairs are available, whether there is a shallow area in the pool and where bedrooms are located in relation to living spaces.

3. “What about safety around the pool?”

Pool safety is a very common concern, especially for family villa holidays with little ones. Some villas have gated pools, fenced gardens or shallow splash areas. Even when they do not, the private setting can actually make it easier to keep an eye on children because you are not competing with crowds. I always recommend:

  • Agreeing clear “pool rules” as a family
  • Having at least one adult on “pool duty” when children are swimming
  • Using buoyancy aids and swim vests as appropriate

When we talk about villas, I can highlight layout and safety features that will help you feel comfortable.

4. “How do we choose the best location for a villa?”

Choosing the right villa location depends on your group’s priorities. Some families want to be able to walk to a beach, village or tavernas. Others prefer a peaceful setting in the countryside with beautiful views, using a hire car for days out. When we talk, I will ask how you like to spend your days, whether you are comfortable driving abroad and how important walking access is. From there, I can suggest villas close to amenities or more secluded options to suit you.

5. “What facilities should we look for in a multigenerational villa?”

For multigenerational villa holidays, I often suggest looking for:

  • At least one ground‑floor bedroom and bathroom for grandparents or anyone with mobility needs
  • Enough bathrooms to avoid queues in the morning
  • A mix of double and twin rooms so you can configure space for teens, cousins and siblings
  • Shaded outdoor areas as well as sunny spots
  • A private pool, ideally with a shallow area
  • Indoor and outdoor dining for the whole group
  • Extra touches like games rooms, table tennis or a cinema room for evenings in

I will always match the villa’s layout and facilities carefully to your group.

6. “How do we divide the cost of a villa fairly?”

There is no right or wrong way, but popular options include:

  • Splitting the total villa cost equally between households
  • Adjusting shares depending on how many people are in each family group
  • Grandparents contributing more as a special treat for the wider family

Once you have chosen a price bracket you are comfortable with, I will find villa options that fit, then you can agree together how you want to split the cost.

7. “Will there be enough to do if we are mostly at the villa?”

One of the joys of a villa holiday is that you do not have to be out and about every day. A good family villa with private pool can keep everyone entertained with swimming, games, sunbathing and relaxed meals together. Many villas also offer extras like table tennis, pool tables, cinema rooms or large gardens. For days when you do want to explore, I can suggest local excursions, beaches or boat trips to balance pool days and adventures.

8. “What about car hire and getting around?”

Whether you need car hire depends on the villa and your plans. Some villas near towns or beaches mean you can walk to restaurants, shops and the sea, and use taxis or local buses for anything further. Others are in more peaceful, rural spots where having at least one hire car is very useful. When I shortlist villas for you, I will highlight how essential a car is, transfer options and which services (such as supermarket deliveries or private transfers) can make things easier.

9. “Is a villa holiday too much work with cooking and tidying?”

This is a very common worry, especially for the main organiser. In practice, most families find the balance works well:

  • Breakfasts and lunches can be simple and relaxed
  • You can mix evenings out at local restaurants with easy barbecues or platters at home
  • Many villas include mid‑stay cleaning or can arrange additional housekeeping at extra cost

We can also look at options like private chefs for a special night, grocery deliveries on arrival and other services that turn your self‑catering villa holiday into a more luxury villa experience.

10. “How far in advance should we book a villa for a large family?”

For peak dates, particularly school summer holidays, it is best to start looking 9–12 months in advance for the best choice of large family villas. Popular destinations and villas with particularly family‑friendly layouts or facilities do sell out early. If you are more flexible on dates or travelling outside the main school holidays, there can be more last‑minute availability, but for big groups, earlier is usually better.
