I've helped countless clients plan their perfect holidays. One of the key things that often gets overlooked in the excitement of planning is packing! After all, a smooth holiday starts long before you board the plane. Here are some of my top packing tips to ensure you're prepared, organised, and ready for your getaway. 1. Start with a List One of the best ways to avoid overpacking or forgetting essential items is to create a packing list. I always recommend breaking the list down into categories—clothing, toiletries, documents, electronics, and any special items like medications or travel accessories. Starting early allows you to add things as you remember them, ensuring nothing is left behind in the last-minute rush. 2. Choose the Right Luggage The luggage you choose depends on your destination, the type of trip, and how much you need to carry. I personally love soft-sided bags for short trips as they tend to be more flexible and easier to fit into tight spaces. For longer trips or flights with stricter baggage allowances, a hard-shell suitcase with wheels is always a solid choice. Make sure your luggage is lightweight and durable, and don’t forget to invest in luggage tags to avoid any confusion at baggage reclaim. 3. Pack Versatile Clothing I recommend packing versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched, especially for trips with limited luggage space. Think neutral colours and multi-purpose items that can easily transition from day to night. For example, a simple black dress or a button-up shirt can be dressed up with accessories for dinner or dressed down for sightseeing. Layering is also key—bring pieces that can be added or removed to adapt to changing temperatures. 4. Don’t Forget the Essentials Some items are just non-negotiable! Be sure to pack the basics, such as your passport, tickets, and travel insurance details (and keep copies of them in case of emergency). A portable charger for your devices is also a must, especially for long flights or when you’re on the go. Also, remember any medications, and always carry them in their original packaging for easier customs checks. 5. Pack Toiletries Smartly Avoid packing large bottles and heavy liquids. Many travel destinations have regulations limiting the amount of liquid you can carry in your hand luggage, so decant your favourite skincare or shampoo into small travel-sized bottles. I also recommend investing in a clear, resealable bag to keep your liquids in one place. And don’t forget essentials like sunscreen and a small first-aid kit with plasters, pain relievers, and any other items you might need in case of emergencies. 6. Don’t Overpack Shoes Shoes can be heavy and take up a lot of space in your suitcase. I suggest limiting yourself to three pairs: one comfortable pair for walking or outdoor activities, a pair for evenings out or formal occasions, and a pair of flip-flops or sandals if you’re heading somewhere beachy or hot. Remember, you can always buy a pair at your destination if you find you need something specific. 7. Roll Your Clothes Instead of folding your clothes, try rolling them. This not only saves space but also helps to minimise wrinkles. It’s an old travel trick I’ve used for years. If you're travelling with delicate items or want to keep your clothes extra neat, consider using packing cubes. These handy organisers help keep your clothing neatly separated and make it easier to access items without unpacking your whole bag. 8. Prepare for Weather Variability You never know what the weather will be like, so it's always a good idea to check the forecast before you pack. I also recommend packing a small, portable umbrella, especially if you’re heading to a place known for its sudden downpours. A lightweight rain jacket is also a smart addition, especially if you’re travelling to a destination with a temperamental climate. 9. Personal Touches Lastly, don’t forget the personal items that make your journey more enjoyable—whether it's a favourite book, a pair of noise-cancelling headphones, or a travel journal to document your adventures. These little comforts can go a long way in making your trip even more memorable. 10. Leave Room for Souvenirs One thing to remember when packing is to leave a little extra space in your luggage for any souvenirs or special items you may want to bring back from your trip. Whether it's a piece of art, local food, or something that catches your eye during your travels, having room in your bag ensures you don’t have to worry about squeezing everything in on your return journey. Packing Tips for Special Destinations If you’re heading somewhere specific, like a beach holiday, a winter getaway, or an adventurous trip to a remote area, make sure your packing is tailored to your destination. For instance: Beach Holiday: Don’t forget swimwear, flip-flops, a hat, and sunscreen. Consider packing a sarong or a lightweight cover-up for easy transitions between the beach and a café. Winter Adventure: Pack warm layers, waterproof outerwear, insulated boots, gloves, and a sturdy hat. Adventure Trip: Think about sturdy shoes, a lightweight backpack, a camera, and multi-use gadgets for hiking, safaris, or exploration. Final Thoughts Packing doesn’t have to be stressful if you take the time to plan ahead. The key is organisation, and with these packing tips, you’ll be able to enjoy a more stress-free, well-prepared holiday. So next time you're heading off on a holiday, take a little extra time to pack smart—your trip will thank you for it!

As a Travel Counsellor with over 20 years of experience, I’ve helped countless clients plan their dream getaways. But there’s one journey that stands out as the most incredible experience I’ve ever had – my expedition to Antarctica aboard the MS Fridtjof Nansen, part of HX Expeditions. This journey was a dream come true and left me with memories I will cherish forever. Aboard the MS Fridtjof Nansen: The Ultimate Expedition Vessel From the moment I boarded the MS Fridtjof Nansen, I knew I was in for something extraordinary. This ship, designed for polar expeditions, offers the perfect balance of comfort and adventure. With its sturdy hull and state-of-the-art stabilization technology, the MS Fridtjof Nansen handled the sometimes-turbulent Drake Passage with ease, allowing me to enjoy the journey without the dreaded seasickness I had heard so much about. What truly made the experience special, however, was the crew. The team of naturalists, biologists, and geologists were incredible, and their knowledge of the Antarctic ecosystem and wildlife added depth to every excursion. Whether we were in a lecture, discussing a hike, or sharing experiences at dinner, it was clear that their passion for the region was contagious. Crossing the Drake Passage: A Thrilling Start The Drake Passage, known for its rough seas, was something I had anticipated with a mix of excitement and a little nervousness. Thankfully, the MS Fridtjof Nansen made the journey as smooth as possible. As we crossed into Antarctic waters, I found myself mesmerized by the gradual change in the landscape – from the deep blues of the ocean to the vast white of icebergs and glaciers. Seeing the first signs of Antarctica – those massive icebergs on the horizon – felt like crossing into another world. It was a moment I will never forget, one that set the tone for the adventure ahead. Exploring Antarctica: A Dream Realized Arriving in Antarctica felt like stepping onto a different planet. The pristine, untouched landscapes were nothing short of awe-inspiring. I made several landings throughout the voyage, each one more breath-taking than the last. I hiked across icy terrain, explored penguin rookeries, and marvelled at the towering glaciers and floating icebergs that surrounded us. But the true highlight of the trip came with the wildlife encounters. While the penguins were captivating, it was the incredible sightings of humpback whales that stole the show. We had the rare privilege of seeing these majestic creatures up close, sometimes just a few meters from our Zodiac boat. There’s something so humbling about witnessing such magnificent animals in their natural habitat, and those moments are what made this expedition truly unforgettable. Wildlife Encounters: Close-Up with Humpback Whales The wildlife of Antarctica was truly the star of the show. While we did see penguins and seals, it was the humpback whales that really made the experience unforgettable. I had the incredible opportunity to witness these gentle giants in the wild, often within arm’s reach from our Zodiac boats. There was something magical about being so close to these massive creatures, seeing their sleek bodies breach the water and hearing the sounds of their exhalations as they surfaced. Watching a humpback’s tail fluke as it dived beneath the water left me awestruck every time. I was fortunate enough to encounter many humpback whales during the voyage, and each sighting felt like a rare gift. We were even lucky enough to witness several humpback whales feeding. It was a mesmerizing sight to watch them work together, creating bubble nets and diving deep into the frigid waters to catch krill. Every interaction with these majestic creatures felt like a privilege, and I left Antarctica with a newfound appreciation for the incredible marine life that thrives in this remote region. Environmental Responsibility and Sustainability One thing I deeply appreciated about the MS Fridtjof Nansen and HX Expeditions was their commitment to environmental sustainability. Antarctica is a delicate and fragile ecosystem, and the crew made sure that we followed strict environmental protocols to minimize our impact. From waste management to responsible wildlife interactions, the team worked hard to ensure that we respected the region and its inhabitants. I also had the opportunity to take part in activities that helped raise awareness of the environmental issues facing Antarctica, including educational sessions on climate change. This trip reminded me of the importance of responsible travel and preserving these pristine wilderness areas for future generations. Onboard Comfort: The Perfect Balance Though the MS Fridtjof Nansen is an expedition vessel, it doesn’t skimp on comfort. After a day of exploring Antarctica, it was a joy to retreat to my cosy cabin and unwind with a hot drink. The dining room served delicious meals, often featuring locally sourced ingredients, and the lounge was the perfect spot to relax with fellow travellers and discuss the day’s adventures. There was a wonderful sense of camaraderie among the passengers. We were all united by a shared sense of awe and wonder at the beauty of the Antarctic landscape, and it was inspiring to meet others who shared my passion for travel and exploration. Why This Journey Will Stay With Me Forever The expedition to Antarctica aboard the MS Fridtjof Nansen was a life-changing experience. From the incredible wildlife sightings, especially the up-close encounters with humpback whales, to the sheer beauty of the icy wilderness, this journey left me with memories I will treasure forever. It reinforced why I love what I do – helping others create unforgettable experiences. If you ever have the chance to visit Antarctica, I highly recommend the MS Fridtjof Nansen and HX Expeditions. The combination of adventure, comfort, and education makes this expedition a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that will stay with you long after you return home. This journey aboard the MS Fridtjof Nansen was one of the most memorable of my life, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have experienced it. I can’t wait to share this adventure with my clients and help them plan their own extraordinary trips to the ends of the Earth.

We all dream of that smooth, seamless airport experience—but when you're travelling during peak seasons, things can get hectic fast. The good news? A little planning goes a long way! Whether you’re jetting off on a sunny short-haul break or embarking on an exciting long-haul adventure, here are my top ten tried-and-tested tips to help keep stress levels low and spirits high. 1. Long-Haul Traveller? Arrive at Least 3.5 Hours Before Your Flight Security queues, bag drops, and passport control can all take longer than expected during peak times. Arriving early gives you a buffer—and peace of mind. 2. Short-Haul Flyers: Allow 2.5 Hours Minimum It might seem like a lot, but short-haul flights are just as prone to delays at check-in or security. Give yourself time to relax before you board. 3. Check In Online & Print Your Boarding Passes Most airlines open online check-in 24 hours before departure. Doing this saves time at the airport and reduces queuing—always a win. 4. Leave Home Earlier Than You Think You can plan your route, but you can’t predict traffic. Give yourself extra time so you’re not stuck clock-watching from the car. 5. Pre-Book Airport Parking – Go for Meet & Greet It’s the closest parking option to the terminal, and it takes the hassle out of finding a space or lugging your luggage across car parks. 6. Snacks & Water Are a Must Pack snacks for the car journey and the airport wait. Also, bring water bottles to drink before you go through security. Many airports now have refill stations airside too. 7. Dress Comfortably – And Think Security Friendly Loose layers and comfy shoes are your best friends. Avoid belts and chunky jewellery, which will all have to come off at security. 8. Be Security Ready Make sure all your toiletries are under 100ml and placed in a clear, resealable sandwich bag before you get to the security line. It speeds things up and keeps your cool intact. 9. Parents: Remember the Essentials, Let Go of the Rest As long as you've got the kids, passports, some cash and your credit card—you’re doing great. Children pick up on stress, so if you stay calm, they’re more likely to do the same. 10. Book with a Travel Counsellor This one’s my personal favourite ?? When you book with someone who takes care of all the little details, all you have to do is pack and go. I’ll worry about the logistics so you don’t have to.
