Kyoto: The City That Captured My Heart

Rebecca Godefroy on 09 Apr 2025

After leaving Hiroshima, we hopped back onto the bullet train — now feeling like complete naturals at navigating Japan’s spotless, efficient transport system — and set off for Kyoto. I’d heard so much about this city before visiting, but nothing prepared me for just how special it truly is. If there was ever a place that felt like the beating heart of traditional Japan, Kyoto is it.

A Timeless Welcome

Within an hour of arriving, we found ourselves stepping into a world that looked like it had been frozen in time. Narrow wooden streets, lanterns gently swaying, and that unmistakable feeling of old Japan all around us. We had booked a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, and honestly, it was the perfect way to begin our Kyoto journey.

There is something incredibly calming about watching the tea master move — every gesture deliberate, every action filled with meaning. These ceremonies are rooted in Zen Buddhism, designed to bring harmony, respect and a sense of quiet mindfulness. Even my youngest (famously fussy!) tried the matcha tea with a brave little sip. I was impressed!

Our Amazing Guide — A Total Game-Changer

Throughout our entire stay, we were joined by the most fantastic local guide, and I can’t recommend this highly enough.

From explaining the history and cultural importance of each temple, shrine and neighbourhood we visited, to pointing out little details we would have completely missed on our own, they truly brought Kyoto to life for us.

They even took us to the best local spots — including an incredible ice cream shop tucked down a side street that we would never have found without them. That insider knowledge made such a difference and elevated every moment of our time here.

Cherry Blossoms & Cycle Adventures

After settling into the Good Nature Hotel and enjoying a blissful night’s sleep, we celebrated my husband’s birthday with a guided cycling tour around Kyoto.

April in Kyoto means cherry blossom heaven, and cycling beneath those soft pink canopies felt like riding through a dream. The boys were in their element — much happier cycling than walking — and our guide filled the journey with fascinating stories, including the hidden Pokémon manhole covers scattered around the city. Naturally, we had to find a few!

We stopped by the river, and the boys insisted on hopping across the stepping stones. My youngest misjudged one and fell in — but he burst out laughing, absolutely drenched and absolutely delighted with himself.

Dinner With a Geisha — A Night We Will Never Forget

That evening brought one of the most extraordinary experiences of the entire trip: dinner with a geisha.

I wasn’t sure how the boys would find it, but they were completely captivated. With our guide translating, we were able to ask her about her training, daily routines and traditions. She poured drinks with flawless grace and ended the evening with a beautiful dance that left us all mesmerised.

Watching her disappear at the end — whisked away to her next engagement — made me realise just how respected and busy these artists are. It offered such a rare, privileged glimpse into a world few people ever experience.

Kyoto’s Icons: Temples, Shrines & Picture-Perfect Streets

The next morning we visited the Golden Pavilion, and I still can’t believe how breathtaking it was. The entire structure is covered in gold leaf, shimmering against the still pond below — it looked almost unreal.

From there, we explored Kiyomizu-dera, perched high above Kyoto. The walk up is lined with charming craft shops and food stalls, and the view from the top is absolutely worth it.

A Day Trip to Nara — Gentle Deer & Beautiful Temples

Our day trip to Nara was filled with character and charm. The free-roaming deer wandering through the park were a huge hit with the boys — especially once they discovered the deer bow back when you bow to them! It was busy, but lively in a way that made the whole place feel warm and joyful.

After exploring the magnificent temple, our guide whisked us off to a fantastic local restaurant — one we would never have found alone — before heading back to Kyoto.

Fushimi Inari — A True Bucket-List Moment

That afternoon we visited Fushimi Inari Taisha, famous for its endless tunnels of red torii gates stretching up Mount Inari.

The base was busy, but as we climbed, the crowds thinned. The late-afternoon timing was perfect: warm light, cooler temperatures and stunning photo opportunities. The boys practically sprinted up the path while I tried (and failed!) to keep up!

Bamboo Forest & Ninja Training — The Perfect End to Our Stay

The next morning we explored the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. Although smaller than I expected, the towering bamboo swaying gently above us created such a magical, peaceful atmosphere.

And then came the boys’ absolute highlight: ninja training! Dressed head-to-toe in ninja outfits, we spent the afternoon learning moves, throwing techniques and giggling nonstop. It was an unforgettable family moment — and the perfect way to end our Kyoto adventure.

Kyoto… A City That Stays With You

We spent five unforgettable nights in Kyoto, and I can honestly say every moment was magic. This is a city that moves at its own calm, graceful pace — a place where culture, beauty and history meet in the most breathtaking way.

And having a private guide made all the difference. It turned our trip from memorable to truly meaningful.

Next up… our final stop: Osaka!

If Kyoto has captured your imagination, or if a Japan adventure is calling your name, I would love to help turn your dream trip into reality.
