In this blog, I’ve picked three cities that work especially well for a short break from the UK, each with its own take on Christmas magic.

1. Vienna – for a storybook Christmas

Vienna feels like it was made for Christmas. Elegant buildings, classical music drifting from concert halls and grand squares that transform into glowing market villages as soon as the sun goes down.

The main Christkindlmarkt usually takes pride of place in front of the Rathaus (city hall). Here you’ll find rows of wooden stalls selling hand‑crafted decorations, candles, wooden toys and plenty of warming treats. It’s easy to while away an evening wandering between the stalls with a mug of punch or hot chocolate in hand.

One of the reasons Vienna is great for a Christmas market break is that it combines atmosphere with a relaxed pace. You can easily mix market time with visits to coffee houses, a slice of Sachertorte, or even an evening concert. It suits couples, friends and families with older children who enjoy soaking up culture as well as Christmas sparkle.

2. Prague – for fairy‑tale charm and great views

The main markets are usually in the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, just a short walk apart, so it’s easy to explore them both in the same evening. Expect plenty of local food – think grilled sausages, trdelník pastries and hearty dishes to keep you warm – alongside stalls selling ornaments, candles and gifts.

What's fantastic about Prague is how compact the centre is. You can stay very central and have most things within easy walking distance, which is ideal for a long weekend. Spend the day exploring the castle district or crossing Charles Bridge, then finish with an evening under the Christmas tree in the Old Town Square.

Prague can get busy in the run‑up to Christmas, so it’s worth having someone on your side to help with timings, flights and choosing a hotel that keeps you close to the action without being right in the noisiest spots.

3. Cologne – for classic markets and riverside strolls

If you’re looking for a German Christmas market experience, Cologne is a brilliant starting point. The city usually hosts several different markets, each with its own personality, so you can try a few in one trip.

The most famous is by the cathedral, with its impressive backdrop and a big central tree. Here you’ll find traditional wooden chalets, plenty of glühwein and local specialities. There are also markets by the river and often a more modern, design‑focused option, so you can pick the atmosphere that suits you best.

Cologne works well whether you fly or travel by train via Brussels, which can add to the sense of adventure and keep things simple once you arrive. The city itself is easy to get around, with good public transport and flat streets that are straightforward to explore on foot.

For families, the mix of markets, river views and indoor attractions like museums and the chocolate museum means you’re not relying on the weather for every moment of your trip.
