Copenhagen: Our Spring City Escape

Sarah Coombes on 07 Apr 2026

Esme and I are back from wonderful Copenhagen and, although she is back to school and I am back in the office, we are both still glowing from such a lovely break. It was one of those trips where everything just felt easy: blue skies, smooth journeys, friendly faces and a city that works beautifully for both grown ups and children.

First Impressions: Blue Skies and SPF 50

Copenhagen greeted us with surprisingly bright, clear days and the kind of crisp light Scandinavia is famous for. It was a timely pre summer reminder that even outside traditional “sun holiday” destinations, your SPF 50 is non-negotiable. We spent a lot of time outdoors, wandering between sights, hopping on boats and simply sitting by the water watching the world go by.

The city itself feels instantly welcoming: clean, calm and very easy to navigate, it's a city that feels made for walking, with compact neighbourhoods and plenty of pedestrian-friendly streets.

Nyhavn: Postcard-Perfect Copenhagen

No visit to Copenhagen is complete without Nyhavn, and it truly lives up to the photos. The canal is lined with brightly coloured townhouses and old wooden ships gently bobbing on the water. It has a wonderfully old-world charm that looks almost like a film set.

Esme loved spotting all the different colours and watching the boats come and go, while I enjoyed the simple pleasure of sitting at a waterside café, sipping a drink and soaking up the atmosphere. It is one of those places that works just as well for a family ice cream stop as it does for an adults-only glass of wine in the evening.

History Brought to Life at Christiansborg Palace

One of Esme’s unexpected highlights was Christiansborg Palace. We picked up the audio guide, which I highly recommend if you are visiting with children. It turned what could have been “just another palace” into a story she could really follow and engage with.

We wandered through grand halls, peered at intricate tapestries and learned about the history and royalty that once filled these spaces. Watching Esme soaking up the commentary and asking questions reminded me how valuable travel is as a learning experience, not just a holiday.

For families, Christiansborg offers a nice balance of culture and interest without being overwhelming. You can easily tailor how much you see depending on attention spans and energy levels.

Seeing the City from the Water: Canal Boat Trip

One of my favourite ways to get to know any city is from the water, and Copenhagen is no exception. We joined a canal boat tour which offered a completely different perspective on the city.

From the boat we glided past a mix of old and new: historic spires, elegant bridges, modern architecture and cosy little pockets of local life along the quaysides. It is a gentle, relaxing way to see a lot without tired legs, and perfect for families needing a quieter moment. Wrap up, sit back and let the city unfold around you.

The Planetarium: Stars, Science and Storytelling

If you are visiting with children, the Planetarium is an absolute must. It is wonderfully interactive, which meant Esme could get hands-on with the exhibits instead of simply reading information boards.

We explored displays that made space and science feel accessible and fun,  enjoyed a very cool temporary art installation. The highlight, though, was stepping into the vast dome theatre for a journey around the stars. It feels immersive and almost dreamlike, and was a real pinch-me moment for both of us.

We finished with a film in English (thanks to headphones), which made the experience very straightforward for an English-speaking family.

Tivoli Gardens: Fairytale Fun Without the Overwhelm

Tivoli Gardens is one of the world’s oldest amusement parks, and it has a very different feel to many of the huge theme parks in the UK. It is charming, beautifully maintained and, importantly for families, a manageable size.

We enjoyed short queues, plenty of rides to suit different ages and a lovely, almost whimsical atmosphere. Instead of feeling hectic, Tivoli feels like stepping into a storybook with twinkling lights, pretty gardens and just enough excitement to keep everyone happy without overload.

It is an ideal choice if you want theme park fun with a softer, more relaxed edge.

A City That Works for Families and Grown Ups

What struck me most about Copenhagen is how well it caters to both families and adults. For families, it offers:

  • Safe, walkable streets and excellent public transport
  • Plenty of green spaces and waterfront areas for running around
  • Attractions that are genuinely child-friendly yet still interesting for adults
  • A calm, relaxed atmosphere that helps keep the whole family in good spirits

At the same time, it is a very appealing destination for a grown-up escape. There are:

  • Stylish cafés and bakeries for leisurely brunches and coffee stops
  • Wine bars and cosy spots along the water to sit and watch the world go by
  • A sophisticated food scene, from simple smørrebrød to fine dining
  • Museums, galleries and cultural experiences that lend themselves to slower, more adult-focused days

I am already very keen to return for a more grown-up trip: think long dinners, late-evening strolls by the harbour and time to really linger in the galleries and neighbourhoods.

Practical Thoughts: Why Copenhagen Makes Such a Great Short Break

  • A long weekend city break: Easy to reach from the UK and very doable in 3 to 4 nights.
  • A first European city with children: Friendly, compact and reassuringly straightforward.
  • Couples and friends: Plenty of culture, food and nightlife without feeling too hectic.
  • All seasons: Crisp winter breaks with cosy cafés, or bright spring/summer days by the water.

The city lends itself beautifully to tailor-made itineraries: you can mix classic sightseeing with quirky local experiences, add on day trips, or simply create a slower-paced stay built around food, design and relaxation.
