Sri Lanka Honeymoon

A Honeymoon that nearly didn't happen and how it was saved.

Sri Lanka & The Maldives

How I helped save a client honeymoon to Sri Lanka and The Maldives during the recent Middle East Crisis

A honeymoon that nearly did not happen… and how it was saved

Sometimes the trips that mean the most are the ones that almost do not happen.

Last Tuesday, just two days before my clients were due to fly to Sri Lanka (& the Maldives) for their honeymoon, their original British Airways flight was cancelled due to the ongoing events in the Middle East.

Not exactly the start they had imagined for the trip they had been dreaming about for months.

With time ticking and their departure date looming, I stepped in to secure an alternative. I quickly arranged new flights with Etihad via Abu Dhabi, with what should have been a smooth, seamless connection through to Sri Lanka.

Crisis averted… or so it seemed.

When Plan B unravels

On Thursday, they arrived at Heathrow ready to begin their honeymoon, only to be told that the airline had changed the schedule of their connecting flight. The connection they had been booked on was no longer possible.

In a moment, their carefully re‑planned route had fallen apart again.

The only viable solution was to keep them on the same Etihad routing, but rebook the onward flight to Sri Lanka. The catch: a 14‑hour layover in Abu Dhabi instead of the short, convenient connection we had originally secured.

For a romantic honeymoon, half a day sitting in an airport was not what any of us had in mind.

Turning a long layover into part of the honeymoon

Rather than leave them to spend 14 hours in transit lounges and departure gates, I looked for a way to turn this disruption into something calm, considered and enjoyable.

The answer was day access at The Ritz‑Carlton in Abu Dhabi.

Instead of airport chaos, they were able to:

  • Freshen up and relax in a beautiful, peaceful setting
  • Enjoy comfortable surroundings and somewhere private to unwind
  • Begin their honeymoon with a touch of luxury, rather than stress

What could have been a frustrating, exhausting delay became an elegant pause in their journey: a chance to decompress, reset and actually start to enjoy the experience.

No airport chaos.
No stress.
Just the start of their honeymoon adventure.

What was happening behind the scenes

From their side, it felt smooth and organised. Behind the scenes, there was a lot going on to protect their honeymoon:

  • Late‑night and early‑morning calls with the Etihad supervisor at Heathrow to ensure they could still board their flight
  • Confirming last‑minute arrangements with The Ritz‑Carlton so they could check in on arrival in Abu Dhabi without any issues
  • Coordinating with our ground team in Sri Lanka to rearrange their private transfer and ensure a car was waiting for their revised arrival time into Colombo

This is the side of travel planning that is rarely seen. It is not just about finding the right flights or a beautiful hotel when you first make the booking. It is about being there when things change, advocating for you, and doing everything possible to protect the experience you have been looking forward to.

Sometimes the real value of having a personal travel professional becomes clearest when things do not go to plan.

Their words, not mine

One of my favourite parts of this story is the messages that pinged through while they were travelling. They sent:

“Thank you, that’s amazing.”
“We have just checked in and the hotel is amazing, we are heading for breakfast. Thank you so much again.”
“We are really looking forward to the new arrangements, thank you, and please get some rest yourself!”
“Morning Sejal, just to let you know we have arrived safely at our hotel. Thank you for everything and have a wonderful weekend.”

Turning a disrupted journey into something relaxed, safe and still special is exactly why I do what I do.

A honeymoon back on track

I am very happy to say that they have now arrived safely in Sri Lanka and are finally enjoying the honeymoon we started planning together six months ago.

Sri Lanka is proving incredibly popular for my travellers this year, with more families already set to visit later in 2026. With its lush tea country, wildlife, culture and beautiful beaches, it makes a wonderful choice for honeymoons, family adventures or a special once‑in‑a‑lifetime trip. Twinned with the Maldives it's a perfect match made in heaven.

If Sri Lanka and or the Maldives is on your wish list, or you are planning a honeymoon or milestone celebration and want the reassurance of having someone in your corner when the unexpected happens, I would love to help you design a trip that feels truly special from start to finish.
