A Luxury Weekend in Budapest with Lumirani, Verno House & BOTANIQ Castle of Tura

Stuart Graham on 28 Nov 2025

I had never been to Budapest before, so when luxury hotel representation company Lumirani invited me on an educational trip, I jumped at the chance. It was the perfect opportunity to experience the city first‑hand, discover some exceptional hotels and restaurants, and bring back insider knowledge I can confidently share with my clients. We started with a stylish city stay at Verno House, a 5 star boutique hotel in the heart of Budapest, and finished with a fairytale finale at BOTANIQ Castle of Tura. Here is how the weekend unfolded.

Friday: First Impressions, Hidden Budapest & Speakeasy Cocktails

Checking in at Verno House

After landing in Budapest, we headed straight to Verno House. It is a chic, 5 star boutique hotel tucked into the city centre, with leafy interiors, calm colours and a relaxed, grownup feel. The location is spot on: central enough to walk to many of the key sights, but once you step inside it feels like a quiet little hideaway.

 Entrance to Verno House

It is exactly the kind of place I would recommend to couples or friends who want a designled boutique hotel instead of a big chain.

A guided walk through “Hidden Budapest”

Our first afternoon was spent exploring Hidden Budapest on a guided walk around Szabadság Square and some of the surrounding buildings. One of the highlights was stepping inside the Adria Palace, once the headquarters of the Hungarian Ocean Steam Navigation Company and now often used as a film set.

Seeing these grand, atmospheric interiors and hearing the stories behind them gave me a completely different perspective on the city. It felt like being shown Budapest’s backstage, not just its frontofhouse.

Dinner at Flava

Back at Verno House, we had dinner at Flava, the hotel’s Michelinmentioned restaurant. It is a fun, stylish space, and the menu brings together influences from North Africa, Latin America and the Middle East, alongside modern takes on Hungarian classics. Every dish was beautifully presented and full of flavour, the sort of place where you want to order a few plates and share.

Lazy Lion Bar: a speakeasy secret

The evening finished with something very special: cocktails at Lazy Lion Bar, a speakeasystyle bar that had not yet opened to the public. Having VIP, preopening access felt like being let in on a local secret.

Inside, the lights are low, the interiors are effortlessly cool and the cocktails are seriously good. With a house DJ providing the soundtrack, it was the perfect way to ease into Budapest’s nightlife and get a feel for the city’s creative side.

Saturday: Porcelain Roses, Markets, Fusion Dining & Immersive Theatre

Slow start at Flava

The next morning started gently with breakfast back at Flava. It is a lovely place to wake up slowly: great coffee, beautifully presented dishes and that same relaxed, leafy atmosphere. It set the tone nicely for another busy but wellpaced day.

Herendi Porcelain rose workshop

Our first outing was a Herendi Porcelain rose workshop, which turned out to be one of the most unexpectedly charming experiences of the trip. We watched the artisans at work, then had the chance to shape and decorate our own porcelain roses.

It is calm, creative and very satisfying, and I immediately thought of clients who would love this as something a little more meaningful than standard sightseeing.

Lunch at Bibo by Dani García

From there, we moved on to Bibo by Dani García for lunch. Here, Spanish flair meets Hungarian ingredients, and every course felt like a little work of art. The atmosphere is relaxed but buzzing, the kind of place you could happily linger over a long lunch with friends.

For foodies, this would be an absolute highlight to build into a Budapest weekend.

Christmas markets & St. Stephen’s Basilica

In the afternoon, we wandered through the Christmas markets around Vörösmarty Square and St. Stephen’s Basilica. With the lights, market stalls, seasonal treats and the backdrop of Budapest’s largest church, it all felt wonderfully festive and atmospheric.

St. Stephen’s Basilica itself is beautiful, but seeing it framed by twinkling lights and wooden stalls made it even more special. It is easy to see why Budapest is so popular as a winter city break.

Time to recharge

Later on, we headed back to Verno House for some down time. Some of us took the chance to rest and freshen up in our rooms, others went for a gentle wander around the streets near the hotel. That little pause in the day made all the difference and is exactly what I would build into a client’s trip so it feels luxurious, not rushed.

Pretheatre dinner at Alelí by Dani García

In the early evening we tried another Dani García creation, Aleli, an Italian osteria in Budapest. Think generous, comforting dishes with a refined edge, served in a cosy, welcoming setting. It was the perfect pretheatre supper: relaxed, satisfying and full of flavour.

Recirquel “Walk My World”

The night ended with Recirquel’s “Walk My World” at Millenáris, an immersive performance that combines circus and contemporary dance. Rather than sitting and passively watching, you feel drawn into the story through movement, staging and music. It was unlike anything I had seen before and added a really creative, modern twist to the trip.

By the time we headed back to Verno House, it felt as though we had sampled so many different sides of Budapest in just one day: artistic, festive, foodie and fun.

Sunday: Danube Views & a Fairytale Escape at BOTANIQ Castle of Tura

Danube cruise

Sunday began with another relaxed breakfast at Flava, followed by a sightseeing cruise on the Danube. Seeing Budapest from the river really brings everything together: the Parliament building, the bridges, the hills of Buda and the grand façades lining the water.

For a first visit, I would always recommend a river cruise early in the stay. It gives a beautiful overview of the city and helps you piece together where everything sits.

BOTANIQ Castle of Tura: stepping into a fairytale

After the cruise, we left the city behind and travelled to BOTANIQ Castle of Tura, around 40 minutes from Budapest. Driving up to the castle, it genuinely feels like you are arriving on the set of a period drama.

Built in 1883 by Baron Sigmund Schossberger as a declaration of love for his wife, the castle is now a luxurious retreat offered on an exclusive basis for buyouts and small groups. Inside, there is a sweeping staircase, elegant salons and 19 beautifully decorated rooms and suites, all with handmade cashmere mattresses.

Outside, you have around 10 acres of gardens to wander through, with a lake, rose garden, picnicperfect lawns, a spa, indoor and outdoor heated pools, a forestsurrounded gym and tennis courts. It is easy to imagine everything from intimate weddings and milestone birthdays to highend corporate retreats taking place here.

Site visit, spa time & countryside activities

On arrival we were welcomed with bites and given a detailed site visit, which was invaluable for seeing how the spaces work in real life. After that, the afternoon was very much “choose your own pace”: some of the group went off for clay pigeon shooting, while others stayed behind to make the most of the spa and thermal experiences.

I loved that both options were built into the stay. It means you can design a trip that caters to those who love activities and those who want to slow right down, all within the same setting.

Dinner in the Palm House

Our final evening was spent in the castle’s spectacular Palm House, where we enjoyed a beautifully crafted dinner with wine pairing. With glass walls, elegant décor and the castle grounds beyond, it felt incredibly special.

BOTANIQ has one of the most extensive wine lists in Hungary, with more than 200 varieties, and the pairings were excellent. It is the kind of setting where you can easily imagine a onceinalifetime celebration dinner.

Monday: One Last Breakfast & Heading Home

Our last morning was all about a slow, indulgent breakfast at Clarisse Restaurant, savouring our final moments in the castle before transferring back to Budapest Airport. It was the perfect, gentle ending to a very special few days.

Why this trip matters for my clients

Spending a weekend like this, hosted by Lumirani, has given me:

A real feel for Verno House and its surroundings, so I know exactly who it will suit.

Firsthand insight into some of Budapests best food and drink, from Michelinmentioned dining to hidden speakeasies and festive markets.

A detailed understanding of BOTANIQ Castle of Tura, how it works for buyouts, celebrations and small luxury groups, and what the guest experience is actually like.

Most importantly, it means I can now design Budapest city breaks and castle escapes based on real experience rather than just pictures and descriptions. If you would like to create a similar weekend or tailor your own version, I can help shape every detail around what you love most: food, culture, nightlife, spa time or that fairytale castle stay.
