Stepping Aboard a Traditional Dhoni: My Extraordinary Way to See the Maldives
When you think of the Maldives, it is easy to picture overwater villas, infinity pools and polished resort islands. But there is another side to this Indian Ocean paradise that feels far more authentic, intimate and close to nature. Recently, I experienced it for myself on a seven–day Maldives Dhoni Explorer cruise: a traditional wooden boat journey that took me far beyond the resort islands, into a world of uninhabited sandbanks, turquoise lagoons and genuine Maldivian life. It was, quite simply, one of the most extraordinary ways to see the Maldives.
Life On Board: Small Group, Big Experience
Our home for the week was a traditional Dhoni: all smooth curves, polished wood and shaded decks designed for lazy hours at sea. There were just 13 of us on board, plus 7 crew members, which meant an incredible crew–to–guest ratio and a wonderfully social, relaxed atmosphere.
From the moment we stepped on board, the tone was set: this is a completely barefoot experience. Shoes stayed off for the entire week. Moving from cabin to deck, lounging on cushions, padding up to the bow to watch the sunrise, you are always barefoot, always connected to the boat and to the sea. It adds a lovely sense of freedom and simplicity to every day.
Days quickly fell into an easy rhythm:
Stretching out on the deck loungers, feeling the sea breeze and watching the islands drift by.
Chatting with fellow travellers, swapping stories and travel tips as the sun moved across the sky.
Slipping into the water for yet another snorkel, because how could you resist that blue?
It felt more like being on a private yacht with friends than a typical cruise: intimate, informal and very easy to feel completely at home.
A Moving Feast: Fresh, Local & Made With Love
Food on board was a highlight in its own right. We enjoyed three freshly prepared meals a day, along with plenty of snacks for those in–between moments after a swim or snorkel.
The crew created an ever–changing mix of dishes that showcased local flavours alongside comforting favourites. There is something very special about sitting out on deck, plate in hand, with the Indian Ocean as your dining room.
Every so often, the crew would cast a line over the side of the boat and, if we were lucky, haul in a whole fish. Knowing that your dinner was caught just metres from the boat that same afternoon added a wonderful sense of place and immediacy to each meal.

Twice–Daily Snorkelling: A Front–Row Seat To The Underwater World
One of the greatest joys of this Dhoni journey was how close we were to the water at all times. Our guide took us on at least two guided snorkels a day, and each one felt different and exciting.
We explored:
Colourful coral reefs teeming with life, from tiny darting fish to larger, curious characters gliding by.
Calm lagoons with impossibly clear water, where the sunlight danced on the sandy floor.
Drop–offs where the reef suddenly fell away into deep blue, creating a dramatic backdrop to the marine life.
Some of the standout moments included:
Swimming with nurse sharks, watching their gentle, graceful movements and feeling a mix of awe and respect as they passed by.
Spotting rays and leopard sharks, those magical, almost prehistoric silhouettes gliding along the seabed.
Being surrounded by shoals of brightly coloured fish, like swimming through a moving rainbow.
With a guide leading each snorkel, it felt safe, informative and, above all, immersive. You truly live in your swimwear on this kind of trip, and that is all part of the joy.

Uninhabited Islands & Sandbanks: The Maldives Of Your Dreams
If you closed your eyes and tried to imagine a “desert island paradise”, you would probably picture what we saw on this cruise.
We visited uninhabited islands and isolated sandbanks that were nothing more than curves of soft white sand, a scattering of palms and every shade of turquoise surrounding them. There were no buildings, no crowds, no noise. Just the sound of the water lapping and the occasional call of a seabird.

One evening will stay with me forever. On an uninhabited island, the crew transformed a simple stretch of sand into a magical dining setting:
They sculpted a dining table directly into the sand, complete with benches.
The table was fully dressed with a tablecloth, cutlery, ornaments and lanterns.
They even created a sand sculpture of a giant ray beside us, beautifully carved and detailed.
We ate under the stars, with lantern light flickering on the sand and the ocean just a few steps away. It was the sort of scene you might expect in a film or glossy brochure, yet there we were, actually living it.
Thoughtful Surprises & A Crew That Made It Personal
What truly elevated this trip from “wonderful” to “unforgettable” was the crew. With 7 crew on board the service felt incredibly personal and heartfelt.
Every day, they found ways to surprise us: a special snack after a long snorkel, a different deck set–up for sunset, or an impromptu beach activity. You could sense how proud they were of their country and how much they wanted to share its beauty with us.
One of the most touching moments was celebrating my friend David’s birthday on board. The crew secretly baked a cake, decorated the dining area and organised a little party that evening. Out in the middle of the Indian Ocean, far from any conventional venue, they created a celebration that felt warm, genuine and full of joy.
These little touches were not advertised or expected; they were simply part of the way the crew cared for us.
A Glimpse Of Real Maldivian Life
This trip was not just about picture–perfect beaches. We were also fortunate enough to visit a couple of inhabited islands, including Finolhu and Felidhoo.
Wandering through the local streets, meeting residents and seeing daily life unfold gave a completely different perspective on the Maldives. Instead of just viewing it as a luxury escape, you see it as a living, breathing country with its own traditions, rhythms and stories.
It was a privilege to step briefly into that world, to support small local businesses and to better understand the culture beyond the resort façade.

Every evening felt like a private show:
Some nights, the sky blazed with fiery oranges and deep reds.
Other evenings, soft pinks and purples melted into the sea.
On a few occasions, the clouds created dramatic layers and beams of light that felt almost cinematic.
No two sunsets were the same, yet each one was unforgettable. Standing on deck, watching the sun sink into the Indian Ocean, you could feel the pace of life slowing right down. It was a time to exhale, reflect on the day’s adventures and feel deeply grateful to be there.

Combining The Maldives Dhoni Cruise With Sri Lanka
One of the things I particularly love about this style of trip is how beautifully it pairs with nearby destinations, especially Sri Lanka.
It is very easy to turn this into a bigger Indian Ocean adventure:
Start in Sri Lanka: Spend a week or more exploring its tea–covered hills, national parks and golden beaches. Think leopard spotting in Yala, scenic train rides through the highlands and time to unwind on the south or east coast.
Then fly to the Maldives: From Colombo, it is a relatively short hop to the Maldives, where you can step straight into barefoot boat life and let the pace slow right down.
Or do it the other way round: Begin with the Dhoni cruise to completely switch off, then head to Sri Lanka for culture, cuisine and wildlife.
For my clients, I can tailor the logistics so that the timings fit smoothly around the cruise dates, arranging private transfers, handpicked stays in Sri Lanka and any extra nights you might like in the Maldives after the cruise, whether that is in a cosy local guesthouse or a luxury island resort.
It makes for an incredibly rich itinerary: two very different countries, linked by the same warm ocean, experienced in one unforgettable trip.

Why I Would Recommend A Dhoni Cruise In The Maldives
For anyone considering the Maldives, a traditional Dhoni cruise offers something very special:
An authentic experience: Travel by traditional boat, meet local people and see islands that most visitors never reach.
Small–group atmosphere: With just a handful of fellow travellers, you quickly form connections and share memories together.
Totally barefoot: Spend the whole week barefoot on polished decks and soft sand, which adds to the sense of freedom and simplicity.
Immersion in nature: Twice–daily snorkels, sandbanks, uninhabited islands and open–deck living keep you close to the ocean at all times.
Endless “pinch me” moments: From dining on a sculpted sand table to watching nurse sharks glide past, it feels like a week of pure “bucket list” experiences.
If your idea of the perfect Maldives escape includes adventure, authenticity and plenty of time in the water, this kind of cruise is a truly magical option, especially when combined with the culture and wildlife of Sri Lanka.
