A Week in Corfu: Our Perfect Family Greek Getaway

Tamsin Huddy on 18 August 2025
This summer we escaped to the sun-soaked island of Corfu, and what a week it was. Flying out from Exeter, we found ourselves in a world of turquoise seas, olive groves, and island life.

Where We Stayed: Our Villa with a View

We based ourselves in a villa overlooking the Antinioti Lagoon and the sea beyond – and it couldn’t have been more perfect. Peaceful and private, it gave us total freedom: just us, the pool, and that incredible view. There was something magical about slipping into the pool at sunrise, the world still quiet except for the swallows lining the wires each morning. Days began with slow breakfasts by the pool, often followed by spirited games of Uno on the terrace, and we loved the flexibility of eating in or heading out to discover local tavernas.

Exploring the Island: Although we love the thought of relaxing on the beach or poolside all day, in reality we like to keep busy, exploring and really getting to know a place. Corfu didn’t disappoint.

Olive Grove Tour: A visit to an authentic olive grove was one of our favourite experiences. We learnt about the island’s centuries-old traditions and discovered why we’ll only buy olive oil in aluminium cans from now on. The kids were fascinated too, soaking up the history and stories just as much as we did. We also enjoyed tasting the oil and now know what to seek out when tasting the oil.

Sokraki: The traditional mountain village of Sokraki stole our hearts with its stone houses, narrow lanes, and breath-taking views. The children loved wandering its quiet streets (helped by the promise of ice cream at the end), and we all enjoyed its peaceful, authentic atmosphere.

Kassiopi: Livelier but equally charming, Kassiopi offered a buzzing harbour, fishing boats bobbing in the water, and plenty of cafés and restaurants to wander between. It turned out to be one of the kids’ favourite spots, full of life and things to see...and buy.

Aqualand: Last year on our holiday, we flew into Corfu and took the ferry across to Albania. At the airport we saw the huge adverts for Aqualand and the kids were so disappointed when we told them we wouldn’t be going. This year, by staying on Corfu, we finally made it — and it was absolutely worth it! The kids had an amazing time. There are so many slides to suit all ages, and the wave pool was a massive hit with the whole family. We found the park to be clean, well run, and overall a real highlight of the holiday.

Corfu Town: No trip to the island is complete without visiting Corfu Town, the island’s capital city. With its Venetian influence, winding alleyways, grand churches, and lively squares, it’s a beautiful blend of history and charm. We spent hours browsing the shops, eating at tucked-away restaurants, admiring the architecture, and of course, enjoying delicious ice cream. Definitely add it to your itinerary.

Beach Days: Corfu’s coastline is nothing short of spectacular. Avlaki Beach – We were blown away by its crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming. Gialiskari Beach – A quieter spot where we snorkelled among colourful fish. Though the beach has no facilities, it’s under a ten minute walk from a cafés/restaurants and a shop, so stocking up on supplies was easy. We got there early and had the beach to ourselves! It was the perfect mix of culture, fun and adventure.

Family Highlights: The children had just as much fun as we did – and not just at the pool. Their highlights included: Learning about olives during the grove tour. Exploring Sokraki and Kassiopi, Splashing down slides at Aqualand. Snorkelling at Gialiskari Beach, spotting a rainbow of fish beneath the waves.

Getting Around: Hiring a car was the best decision we made. Driving around Corfu was straightforward, and it gave us the independence to explore the island at our own pace. From hidden coves to mountain villages, every winding road seemed to lead to another discovery.

Final Thoughts: Looking back, our week in Corfu felt like the ideal balance of relaxation and adventure. From peaceful mornings by the pool and competitive Uno battles in the sun to wandering Venetian streets and diving into the island’s history, we loved every moment. Best of all, the children enjoyed it just as much – proof that Corfu is a wonderful family destination.
