ATOL Protection Explained (and Why You Should Care)

Vicki Thompson on 21 August 2025
Let’s be honest — travel jargon can feel like alphabet soup. ATOL, ABTA, API, ESTA… do you really need to know what they mean?

When it comes to ATOL, the answer is a big, resounding yes.

Because ATOL protection could be the difference between your dream holiday… and losing your money if something goes wrong.

What is ATOL?

ATOL stands for Air Travel Organiser’s Licence. It’s a UK financial protection scheme run by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

In simple terms, if the company you book your trip with stops trading, ATOL makes sure you don’t lose your money or get stranded abroad.

When does ATOL apply?

If you book a package holiday (flights + hotel, or flights + another service like transfers or car hire) through a UK ATOL-protected travel company, you’re covered.

This means:

If the company goes bust before you travel, you’ll get a full refund.

If it happens while you’re abroad, you’ll be flown home without extra cost.

Why does it matter?

Every year, travellers are caught out by companies going under. You might remember when Thomas Cook collapsed in 2019 — over 150,000 Brits were stranded abroad. Those who booked ATOL-protected packages were flown home at no cost. Those who didn’t… weren’t so lucky.

And here’s the kicker: if you book flights and hotels separately yourself online, you might not be covered. That “cheap” deal suddenly doesn’t look so cheap when you’re out of pocket.

Booking with Me = ATOL Protection

When you book with me, every holiday package I put together is fully ATOL protected. It means:

Your money is safe.

You won’t be stranded.

You can book with complete peace of mind.

Because let’s be real — holidays are meant for cocktails, sunsets, and exploring new places. Not worrying about what happens if your travel provider disappears overnight.

The Bottom Line

ATOL protection isn’t the glamorous side of travel. It doesn’t come with glossy Instagram photos or TikTok-worthy moments.

But it’s the safety net that makes sure those memories you’re making are worry-free.

So next time you see a “too good to be true” deal online, ask yourself: is it ATOL protected?

With me, the answer is always yes.
