The Problem With Hotel Reviews (And How I Fix It For You)

Vicky Ingham on 08 Jun 2026

5 stars to one person can feel like a 3-star experience to someone else, which is exactly why your taste, style and expectations matter far more than any TripAdvisor score

Have you ever booked a “perfect” hotel because of glowing TripAdvisor reviews, then arrived and wondered if you were even in the same place those people stayed? That is the problem with relying on reviews alone. We all travel differently.  Reviews are written by EVERYONE - not necessarily people with the same tastes and expectataions as you.

What feels like:

  • “5 star luxury” to one person can feel more like “average and underwhelming” to another
  • “beautifully peaceful” to some can feel “too quiet and in the middle of nowhere” to others
  • “great value” for one budget can feel “overpriced” for another

This is exactly where I come in as your personal travel consultant. Instead of scrolling through pages of conflicting opinions, I take the time to ask:

  • What is your taste and style?
  • Which hotels or destinations have you loved before, and why?
  • What are your must-haves, nice-to-haves and absolute no-goes?

On top of really getting to know you, I also have insight you simply cannot get from review sites. I am part of a community of over 2,000 fellow Travel Counsellors, I work closely with hotel representatives, and I receive ongoing training on hotel brands, standards and what to expect. That insider knowledge helps me cut through the noise and spot what will genuinely suit you. If you are tired of guessing which review to trust, let me do the filtering so you can simply look forward to a holiday that feels made for you.
