A family adventure in Sri Lanka & the Maldives
Last summer, my family and I set off on a journey that felt like stepping into a storybook: a two–centre adventure combining the wild beauty of Sri Lanka with the castaway luxury of the Maldives. It was one of those trips where every day brought a “wow” moment, but also plenty of slower, quiet memories: splashing in pools, sipping tea in the cool hills, and simply being together with no distractions.
A family adventure in Sri Lanka & the Maldives
We began in Sri Lanka, a country that is made for families who love culture, wildlife and a touch of luxury at the end of each day. Our days were filled with safaris, ancient sites and scenic flights; our evenings were all about cosy family dinners, gorgeous pools and incredibly kind staff who made the children feel just as special as the adults.
Later, we flew on to the Maldives, where time seemed to slow completely. Think: powder–soft sand between your toes, turquoise water as far as you can see, and that delicious feeling of having nowhere else you need to be.
This is the kind of itinerary I now love planning for families: full of experiences that the kids will remember for years, but with enough comfort, space and care that parents genuinely get a holiday too.
Wildlife, wonder and the thrill of Yala National Park
One of our absolute highlights was Yala National Park in Sri Lanka. There is nothing quite like taking your children on safari for the first time: the early–morning chill in the air, the sound of birds waking up, and that hush that falls across the jeep when someone spots movement in the trees.
In Yala we were lucky enough to see elephants moving silently through the bush, crocodiles basking on the banks, and snakes slipping through the undergrowth. For our children, this was the moment they suddenly realised that the animals from their books really exist in the wild. For us, it was a privilege to share that sense of awe with them.
Back at the lodge, we could sink into a level of comfort that makes all the early starts worthwhile: beautiful rooms, a pool to cool off in, and staff who remembered our names and our favourite drinks.
Sunrise at Sigiriya: a memory for life
Sri Lanka is not only about wildlife; it is also a land of stories and ancient kingdoms. Climbing Sigiriya Rock as a family was another lifelong memory. We set off in the dark and watched the sky slowly blush with colour as we climbed. Reaching the top just as the sun rose over the jungle was magical.
From up there, the patchwork of forests, lakes and villages stretched out in every direction. The children loved hearing the legends of kings and castles that once stood on this rock, and it was a lovely way to weave a bit of history and culture into our holiday without it ever feeling like a lesson.
Seaplane, tea country and pure escapism
Another standout moment came when we boarded a seaplane to fly into Sri Lanka’s tea country. From the air we watched the scenery change from jungle and paddy fields to perfectly manicured tea plantations that looked like a green quilt draped over rolling hills.
We touched down on a pristine lake so still it mirrored the sky, with a speedboat waiting to whisk us across the water to our hotel. It felt wonderfully cinematic.
Once we arrived at our hotel in the tea country, everything slowed right down. We spent our days kayaking, walking through tea fields, sipping freshly brewed tea on the verandah while the children played in the pool, and simply soaking up the cool, peaceful atmosphere. It was the perfect place to switch off as a family.
Why our chosen hotels were perfect for families
Throughout Sri Lanka we chose a collection of characterful, high–end hotels that really understand what families need: space, flexibility and thoughtful touches that make travel with children feel effortless.
Wallawwa
Wallawwa was our gentle introduction to Sri Lanka. Set in lush tropical gardens, it feels like a tranquil hideaway, yet it is wonderfully convenient for arrivals and departures. For families, it offers:
- Spacious, stylish rooms and suites that work well for sharing with children.
- A relaxed pool area where everyone can unwind after a long flight.
- Warm, attentive staff who are brilliant with little ones and happy to adapt menus or timings.
It was the ideal place to rest, reset and start to slip into holiday mode.
Sigiriya Water Gardens
From Wallawwa we moved on to Sigiriya Water Gardens, which became a huge hit with the children. Set among landscaped pools and greenery, it feels serene and exclusive, yet is just a short drive from Sigiriya Rock.
For families, Sigiriya Water Gardens works beautifully because:
- The villa–style accommodation gives you privacy and space, perfect if you have younger children who need downtime.
- The setting is peaceful, with plenty of room for children to explore safely.
- It is the perfect base for sunrise climbs up Sigiriya and visits to nearby cultural sites, so you can combine adventures with easy pool time.
Tea Trails
In tea country, Tea Trails felt like staying in a gracious country house, elevated to luxury levels. With just a handful of rooms in each bungalow, service feels wonderfully personal.
Families are very well looked after here:
- The atmosphere is calm but not stuffy, which is ideal if you want somewhere refined yet welcoming with children.
- Gardens, walking trails and gentle activities give everyone space to roam without needing to leave the estate.
- The all–inclusive style of dining and drinks makes life easy for parents, and staff are happy to arrange earlier meals or special dishes for younger guests.
Uga Yala
At Yala, we stayed at Uga Yala, which delivered that magical balance of safari adventure and coastal relaxation. Imagine waking up to the sound of the ocean and heading out on game drives in the national park, then returning to a luxurious retreat by the beach.
For families, Uga Yala offers:
- A true “safari lodge by the sea” feel that keeps children excited and engaged.
- Comfortable, spacious accommodation with all the little luxuries that make parents happy too.
- Friendly, knowledgeable guides who are fantastic at bringing nature to life for younger travellers.
It is an ideal choice if you want to introduce your children to safari in a softer, more relaxed way than some of the more rugged parks in Africa.
Amangalla
In Galle, Amangalla brought us into the heart of Sri Lanka’s colonial history. Set within the walls of Galle Fort, it combines old–world charm with polished, contemporary comfort.
Families will love:
- The feeling of staying in a grand historic property, with high ceilings, verandahs and a beautiful pool.
- Being able to wander out into the fort’s cobbled streets, cafés and boutiques, which makes exploring with children easy and fun.
- Thoughtful, intuitive service that makes you feel at home from the moment you arrive.
Although it feels very elegant, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming to families, making it a wonderful finale to a Sri Lanka itinerary.
Finishing in the Maldives
After so much adventure, ending in the Maldives was the dream. Days quickly fell into a gentle rhythm of beach time, swimming, snorkelling and simple pleasures like watching the sunset together. The children loved the freedom of barefoot days and calm, shallow water, and we loved the sheer ease of having everything on our doorstep.
Combining Sri Lanka with the Maldives worked perfectly for us as a family: Sri Lanka gave us wildlife, culture and variety, and the Maldives gave us complete rest and reconnection.
If you are dreaming of a family holiday that blends adventure with luxury, I would love to help you create something similar: a journey that is as enriching for the children as it is relaxing for the grown–ups, with handpicked hotels that really understand families and make you feel utterly looked after from start to finish.
