Our Stay at Martinhal Sagres Family Resort:
Thoughtful Family Luxury on the Algarve
After years of travel, it’s the little touches that truly stand out—and that’s exactly what we found on our recent stay at the Martinhal Sagres Family Resort, tucked away on Portugal’s beautiful western Algarve.
Family-Friendly Details That Make All the Difference
We stayed in Pine Villa 401, designed with families in mind from the very start. Travelling with little ones can be daunting, but Martinhal makes it feel effortless. In the master bedroom, we found a travel cot and extra mattress ready to go, with a full-sized clothes airer to handle soggy swimwear and laundry. The in-villa washer/dryer is a true lifesaver, and thoughtful extras like a potty, toddler seat, specialist nappy bin, highchair and stairgate set this property apart from everywhere else we’ve stayed.
Safety and comfort are clear priorities, too. The private pool is gated, covered and heated—no worrying about chilly dips or pine needles and leaves. A family bathroom offers a bath for little ones and the master ensuite has a spacious shower, giving everyone their own space.
It’s the small gestures that delighted my girls: age-appropriate rucksacks with treats inside, from the adorable mascot fox teddy for Bea to a branded Bluetooth speaker for Zara. Arriving is a breeze, with golf carts whisking you and your bags to your villa—no need for tired little legs to be trailing cases through the resort.
Dining with Ease
Families are spoilt for choice with three on-site restaurants, including dinner service from as early as 5pm. Kids’ plates and bowls are always available, and there’s even a special buffet just for little diners. In addition, you can get food delivered to eat in your accommodation, or you can utilise the on-site supermarket for essentials, fresh fruit and bread and great coffee! Plus, while the grown-ups relax, the children can enjoy the play area, trampolines, and bouncy castle – perfect for unwinding ahead of mealtime.
Honest Highlights
While there’s so much to love, it’s important to know that the resort is large and hilly with cobbled paths. Families with less-mobile members may find this challenging.
A few things to consider: there are extra charges for several activities, such as the kids’ club (€25 for a 3-hour slot, needing 48 hours’ advance booking), the trampoline bungee, fitness classes, and even kids’ yoga. Some complimentary family activities are provided, but these also require booking in advance.
Evenings are on the quieter side. If your family loves lively, extended entertainment, you’ll find things wrap up early here. Think a quick Hokey Cokey with the mascot, a magician or live music, but everything finishes by 7.30pm. Very casual, very relaxed—just not the nightly disco my girls had loved on previous Mediterranean holidays.
Final Thoughts
Despite the additional charges and quieter evenings, Martinhal Sagres truly shines for families with young children. It’s the little thoughtful details and genuine focus on parental peace of mind that make it a standout in family travel. If you’re seeking a sophisticated yet easy-going escape, where kids are cherished and parents can unwind, this is a wonderful option.
