Sri Lanka: A Small Island Full of Big Moments

Sri Lanka: My Own Journey Through Kandy, Yala & The South Coast

Alice Hornsby on 04 Feb 2026

Every so often I visit somewhere that reminds me exactly why I do what I do. Sri Lanka was one of those trips. Rather than rushing around ticking off sights, I travelled with a private driver‑guide who met us in Colombo, stayed with us throughout, and dropped us back at the airport at the end. It felt like travelling with a local friend who knew all the secret viewpoints, snack stops and stories that you simply would not find on your own. In this blog I am sharing the route I took: Kandy, Yala National Park, Rekawa in Tangalle and Ahangama, with an incredibly scenic drive through Tea Country, Nuwara Eliya and Ella. If you have been considering Sri Lanka, this will give you a feel for how a similar tailor‑made trip could work for you.

From the moment we landed in Colombo, everything was taken care of. Our driver‑guide was waiting for us with a smile, helped with our bags and quickly whisked us away from the airport towards the hills.

Having a private driver in Sri Lanka makes such a difference:

  • You travel at your own pace, stopping for viewpoints and photo opportunities whenever you like
  • There is no stress about directions, timetables or where to stop for food
  • You get a local perspective, with little stories about daily life, history and culture along the way
  • By the end of the trip, it feels like you are travelling with a friend rather than a stranger

For my clients, I love arranging this style of travel because it keeps the experience relaxed and seamless, while still feeling authentic and adventurous.

Our first main stop was Kandy, Sri Lanka’s cultural capital nestled among green hills and centred around a tranquil lake. It has a slightly gentler, cooler feel than the coast, and makes a lovely introduction to the island.

We stayed at Villa Rosa, a characterful property with views that sweep across the valley. It felt more like staying in a stylish friend’s hillside home than a traditional hotel: peaceful, with warm service and plenty of little details that made it special.

While in Kandy, you might:

  • Visit the Temple of the Tooth, one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred Buddhist sites
  • Stroll around the Royal Botanical Gardens
  • Explore local markets and watch daily life unfold
  • Simply relax on the terrace at your hotel, listening to birdsong and enjoying the cooler air

Kandy worked perfectly as a gentle cultural stop before we headed deeper into the country.

The journey from Kandy to Yala National Park was a highlight in itself. Rather than treating it as “just a transfer”, we turned it into a day of exploring through some of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful landscapes.

Our route took us:

  • Into Tea Country, where carpets of bright green tea bushes cover the hillsides, dotted with colourful saris as workers hand‑pick the leaves
  • Through Nuwara Eliya, often called “Little England”, with its cooler climate, colonial‑era buildings and neatly kept gardens
  • Past waterfalls and misty viewpoints, each bend in the road revealing another incredible panorama
  • Through Ella, a laid‑back hill town popular with walkers and those who like a bohemian, backpacker‑meets‑boutique vibe

You can choose to stop for lunch with a view, visit a tea factory to see how your morning brew is made, or simply enjoy the scenery from the comfort of the car, pausing for photos along the way. This is where having your own driver really comes into its own: you are not tied to a rigid schedule and can make the journey part of the holiday.

Our next stay was at Jetwing Yala, perfectly placed for exploring Yala National Park. As soon as we arrived, there was a real sense of being close to nature but still surrounded by comfort. Think wide‑open skies, the sound of the ocean and the anticipation of early morning game drives.

Yala is one of Sri Lanka’s most famous wildlife reserves, known especially for:

  • Leopard sightings, with one of the highest densities in the world
  • Elephants, crocodiles, deer and an incredible variety of birdlife
  • Beautiful, varied landscapes from scrub forest to rocky outcrops and lagoons

Typical days here begin before sunrise, with a wake‑up call and a quick coffee before heading out in your jeep. There is something magical about watching the park gradually come to life in the soft morning light, scanning for movement in the bushes or along the tracks. When you do a morning and afternoon safari, you can ask your driver to stay in the park to make the most of your time there. You can chill at the rest stop, grab some lunch and a coffee and relax near the sea. If you choose to return to your hotel and go back later for your afternoon safari, you will have to queue again to get in.

Back at Jetwing Yala after your day of wildlife spotting, you can unwind with a drink under the stars, listening to the sounds of the night and swapping stories about the sightings from the day.

From Yala, we continued along the south coast to Rekawa in Tangalle, a quieter, more unspoilt stretch of coastline with a wonderfully laid‑back feel.

We stayed at Buckingham Place, an intimate property that combines contemporary design with a calm, barefoot atmosphere. It quickly became one of those places you do not really want to leave:

  • Spacious rooms with thoughtful touches and views over the lagoon or gardens
  • A beautiful pool and peaceful corners to curl up with a book
  • Attentive, friendly service that feels very personal and genuine

Rekawa is known for its wild, windswept beach and, in season, turtle nesting sites. It is less about manicured resort life and more about a natural, soothing coastal escape. Long walks along the sand, watching the waves crash, slow lunches and starry nights were very much the order of the day here.

For clients who enjoy understated luxury, space and tranquillity, this area is a wonderful choice.

Our final stop was Ahangama, further along the south‑west coast. The vibe here is a little more lively and bohemian, with a mix of surf spots, beach bars and boutique hotels scattered along the shoreline.

We stayed at Mosvold Villa, a stylish beachfront retreat where you can fall asleep to the sound of the waves and wake up just steps from the sand. It combines comfort with a relaxed, intimate feel:

  • A serene pool area overlooking the ocean
  • Direct beach access for walks and sunset watching
  • A cosy, home‑from‑home atmosphere with staff who quickly get to know you

From Ahangama you can easily explore nearby Galle Fort with its cobbled streets, cafes and galleries, or simply settle into a rhythm of ocean swims, good food and golden sunsets.

It was the perfect place to end the trip: a few unhurried days by the sea to reflect on everything we had seen and done, before heading back to Colombo for our flight home.

Looking back, what made this journey so special was:

  • The variety: In one holiday we experienced hills, tea plantations, wildlife, quiet lagoons and surf‑washed beaches.
  • The people: Our driver‑guide was the golden thread that ran through the trip, from the first hello at Colombo to our goodbye at the airport. His knowledge, kindness and humour added so much to the experience.
  • The places we stayed: Each hotel had its own character and charm, from hillside views in Kandy to barefoot luxury by the sea.
  • The ease: With a private driver and a carefully planned route, everything flowed smoothly so we could simply relax and enjoy it.

This is exactly the kind of trip I love to create for my clients: thoughtful, personal and full of those little moments that stay with you long after you return home.

If this has sparked ideas for your own journey, I would be delighted to help you plan something similar, tailored around what you love.

Whether you would like to follow a version of this route or adapt it to include more time in Tea Country, extra safari days or a different coastal finish, I can create a bespoke itinerary with a private driver, hand‑picked hotels and all the details taken care of.
