Gumbet, Turkey: Laid back beach days & lively nights!
Tucked next to the cosmopolitan resort of Bodrum on Turkey’s Aegean coast, Gumbet is a favourite for those who want easy beach days, great value, and plenty going on from morning to midnight. With a long, gently shelving sandy bay and a vibrant promenade of cafés, bars and restaurants, it is ideal for couples, friends and families who like a relaxed atmosphere with the option of buzzing nightlife.
I have visited Gumbet around 12 times! I always stayed in May, June or September as it is not as busy as the main summer months but the weather is still beautiful. Each time I stayed at the Bagevleri Hotel which is a small family run bed and breakfast hotel in a fantastic location, just off the main road so very near to the sandy beach, shops and restaurants in Gumbet. The hotel has a lovely pool area, bar and restaurant and with a shop just across the road you don’t even have to leave the hotel for the day if you don’t want to! The hotel staff are so lovely here and always looked after us with a real personal touch. I loved staying on B&B basis here as there are so many lovely restaurants around the resort.
Beachlife & watersports: Gumbet’s star attraction is its sweeping sandy beach, backed by palm trees and casual beach clubs. The sea is usually calm and shallow near the shore, so it is well suited to children and less confident swimmers. For something more active, Gumbet is a popular spot for jet‑skiing, parasailing and banana boats, paddleboarding and windsurfing and lazy boat trips around the Bodrum peninsula with swim stops in clear coves. Many beach clubs offer sunbeds, umbrellas and drinks service, so you can linger from late breakfast through to sunset cocktails.
Explore nearby Bodrum: Just a short taxi or dolmus ride away, Bodrum brings a touch of glamour and culture. You can wander the medieval castle and enjoy panoramic harbour views or browse the narrow streets, whitewashed houses and shops selling leather, textiles and local crafts. Bodrum Marina is lined with upscale restaurants, yachts and boutiques so perfect for an evening stroll after dinner. Like everywhere in Turkey, Bodrum and Gumbet are both full of shops selling ‘fake’ designer gear!
Boat trips & island adventures: From Gumbet and nearby Bodrum harbour, you can join daily cruises that showcase the best of the Aegean with full‑day boat trips with lunch and swim stops. Many of these include a stop at the famous ‘Camel Beach’. There are also sunset cruises with music and drinks and day trips by ferry over to the nearby Greek island of Kos (passport and border checks required). These are a lovely way to see the coastline and find quieter bays away from the main resort. I took a gulet cruise on every single one of my visits to Gumbet as it was always one of my favourite parts of my holiday.
Evenings & nightlife: As the sun goes down, Gumbet comes to life! Along the main bar street and beachfront you will find relaxed seafront restaurants serving fresh fish, Turkish meze and international favourites, cocktail bars with live music or DJs and livelier late‑night venues. If you prefer bigger clubs or boat parties you will find these in nearby Bodrum.
Day trips & things to do nearby: There are so many things to do in and around Gumbet! …. Aswell as the boat trips, you can take a jeep safari into the hills and villages of the Bodrum peninsula, visit the Local villages and markets for a glimpse of traditional life and regional produce, take a Turkish bath (hamam) to unwind at the start or end of the holiday and visit the nearby waterpark.
You can dive from Bodrum aswell. I am not qualified but I did take a beginners introductory scuba dive on one of my visits.
Gumbet is great for: Couples & friends with its lively but relaxed atmosphere with lots of bars and restaurants, easy access to Bodrum for smarter evenings, marina restaurants and shopping and a good choice of boat trips and watersports for days out together. Younger adults & groups with plenty of nightlife along the bar street and beachfront, affordable places to stay and eat and the beach clubs and music bars which give it a fun, sociable feel. Families with school‑age children/teens because of its long, gently shelving sand-and-shingle beach, usually with calm water, lots of informal places to eat, and boat trips and the waterpark that work well with children.
