Must do's in Düsseldorf

I recently spent time exploring it and here are my favourite experiences, the ones I would confidently recommend to my clients.

Fresh beer🍺 Altstadt & Brewery Culture

The heart of Düsseldorf beats in its Altstadt, often referred to as “the longest bar in the world.” This is where you truly feel the city’s personality. Picture cobbled streets, historic squares, and a buzz that builds as the evening unfolds. Even if nightlife isn’t your focus, it’s worth visiting simply to soak up the atmosphere. A must-do is trying the local Altbier in a traditional brewery. Small glasses arrive quickly and frequently, and before you know it, you’re part of the rhythm of the place. It’s wonderfully authentic and refreshingly unpretentious.

Heartbeat of the Altstadt

🌅 Rhine Promenade

For a slower pace, the Rhine promenade offers a completely different side of the city. Wide walkways, uninterrupted river views, and a calm, almost meditative atmosphere. It’s the perfect place for a morning stroll or an early evening wander as the sun begins to set. This is Düsseldorf at its most relaxed. Sit, people-watch, and let the city come to you.

🏙️ MedienHafen & Modern Architecture

Düsseldorf also has a bold, contemporary edge, best seen in MedienHafen. This area is a striking contrast to the old town. Think sleek buildings, creative architecture, and reflections dancing across the water. It feels modern, stylish, and quietly confident. In the evening, it transforms into one of the city’s most sophisticated dining spots, ideal for a memorable dinner.

Königsallee🛍️ Königsallee (The Kö)

If you enjoy a touch of glamour, Königsallee delivers effortlessly. Luxury boutiques line a picturesque canal, with elegant bridges and perfectly dressed locals adding to the scene. Even without shopping, it’s a lovely place to stroll and absorb Düsseldorf’s polished side.

k20 k21 art museums🎨 K20 & K21 Art Museums

For those who appreciate art, Düsseldorf offers something truly impressive. The K20 and K21 galleries showcase modern and contemporary works in beautifully curated spaces. Allow a few hours here, it’s worth it.

To truly understand a city, you need to see it from above. The Rhine Tower offers panoramic views across Düsseldorf, the river, and beyond. Visit towards sunset if you can, watching the city transition into evening is something quite special.

🌿 Schloss Benrath

Just outside the city centre lies one of Düsseldorf’s most elegant escapes. Schloss Benrath is a stunning 18th-century palace surrounded by expansive gardens. It’s peaceful, refined, and ideal for a half-day retreat away from the urban energy.

Nordpark & Japanese Garden🌸 Nordpark & Japanese Garden

Düsseldorf has a fascinating connection with Japanese culture, and nowhere is this more evident than in Nordpark. The Japanese Garden is beautifully designed and incredibly tranquil, a perfect pause in a busy itinerary.

🐠 Aquazoo Löbbecke Museum

If you are travelling with family, or simply enjoy something a little different, the Aquazoo offers a blend of marine life and natural history. It’s engaging, educational, and a great indoor option.

🚤 Rhine River Cruise

One of the most effortless ways to experience Düsseldorf is from the water. A short Rhine cruise gives you a completely different perspective of the city: its skyline, bridges, and blend of old and new. It’s relaxing, scenic, and a lovely addition to any itinerary.

Beyond Düsseldorf

If you have extra time, the surrounding region offers wonderful day trips. One of my favourites is Cologne, just a short journey away. Expect a vibrant atmosphere, stunning cathedral views, and a completely different energy while still retaining that Rhineland charm.
