Celebrity Apex - is this the right cruise ship for your family?
Following my recent visit aboard Celebrity Apex during the CLIA conference, I’ve been reflecting on which families I would recommend this ship to.
Celebrity Apex is a beautiful ship, with stylish surroundings, excellent dining and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. But what stood out most to me is that she isn’t trying to be everything to everyone.
And that’s exactly why I think she becomes such an interesting option when it comes to modern family cruising.
Because the real question isn’t just whether a ship is “good” or “luxurious”, it’s whether it’s right for your family, your stage of life, and the kind of holiday you actually enjoy.
If you’re searching for a more stylish, contemporary style of cruise or considering a premium cruise for families that feels a little more refined, this is a ship worth understanding properly.
So let’s take a closer look.
A different type of family cruise
When many people think of a family cruise, they picture waterslides, climbing walls and children's activities from morning until night.
Celebrity Apex offers something different.
This is a ship that feels more grown up in atmosphere. The focus is on beautiful design, excellent food, attentive service and quality time together. For some families, that balance is exactly what they are looking for.
While I didn’t spot many children during my visit, this wasn’t entirely surprising as it was term time and the ship was preparing to depart on a 14-night sailing. What I did see was a ship that I think works very well for certain families and life stages.
As I walked around, I was particularly drawn to spaces like the Rooftop Garden, which felt like a lovely place for families to relax together in the fresh air, and Eden, which has one of the most unique and calm atmospheres I’ve seen at sea.
Families with a baby or toddler
One of the first groups that came to mind was parents travelling with one very young child.
Not every family wants or needs a full-on resort style cruise experience. Some parents are looking for a family cruise from Southampton or further afield where they can still enjoy excellent restaurants, stylish surroundings and a calmer pace, even with a little one in tow.
Celebrity Apex can work well for families who want the ease and convenience of cruising, without needing splash parks and constant organised entertainment.
Families with older children and teenagers
I also think Celebrity Apex could be a great fit for families with older children and teenagers.
If your children are happy spending time by the pool, trying different restaurants, enjoying theatre and lounge entertainment in the evenings and exploring ports together, there is plenty here to enjoy.
The ship feels sophisticated without feeling stuffy, and I can imagine many teenagers appreciating the more contemporary design-led feel.
It’s a different style of cruise holiday, but for the right family, it can be a very enjoyable one.
Multi-generational family holidays
As someone who regularly helps families plan multi-generational cruises, I can also see Celebrity Apex working well for grandparents, parents and older children travelling together.
Cruising naturally gives everyone the flexibility to enjoy their own time while still coming together for the moments that matter most.
Whether it’s a relaxed breakfast, time by the pool, exploring a destination together or dinner in one of the speciality restaurants, the ship supports that balance beautifully.
Sailing from Southampton makes life easier
One of the biggest advantages for UK families is that Celebrity Apex sails from Southampton.
There are no airport queues, no strict luggage limits and no stress about flight delays at the start of your holiday.
Instead, you can simply drive to the port, drop your luggage and start your holiday immediately.
For many families planning a Celebrity Apex cruise, that convenience can be a deciding factor on its own.
Is Celebrity Apex the right fit for your family?
One thing I’ve learned after helping many families plan cruise holidays is that there is no such thing as the perfect cruise ship for everyone.
Some families want waterslides, ice-skating, arcades and non-stop entertainment. Others are looking for something more relaxed, with excellent food, beautiful surroundings and quality time together.
Celebrity Apex sits firmly in the second category.
If your family enjoys good restaurants, stylish spaces and exploring destinations together, there is a lot to love here.
The key is choosing a cruise that matches your family’s travel style, not just the one with the most facilities.
My final thoughts
Celebrity Apex left a very positive impression on me.
What struck me most was how considered everything felt. The ship is stylish without feeling flashy, and premium without feeling formal.
While I wouldn’t describe her as a traditional family-focused ship, I absolutely think she is a fantastic option for the right family.
For parents travelling with babies, families with chilled older children and teenagers, or multi-generational groups looking for a more refined cruise experience, Celebrity Apex has a great deal to offer.
