Queen Anne - the perfect multi-generational cruise?
Following my recent visit aboard Cunard’s Queen Anne, I’ve been reflecting on how she fits into the world of family and multi-generational cruising.
Queen Anne is a beautiful ship, with a real sense of elegance and occasion, but what stood out most to me is how genuinely welcoming she feels for all ages. And that is exactly what makes her so interesting for families.
Because while Cunard is not traditionally thought of as a family cruise line, Queen Anne does offer something quite special for the right kind of family holiday.
So let’s take a closer look.
A different style of family cruise
Queen Anne offers something very unique - she has all of Cunard's history and elegance, but with a contemporary twist.
This is a ship that feels refined and considered in atmosphere, with a focus on quality service, beautiful public spaces and a timeless style of cruising. But that doesn’t mean families are an afterthought.
What I found most interesting during my visit was how balanced she feels. There is a sense of calm and space onboard, but also enough going on that different generations can all find their own rhythm.
It feels less about non-stop entertainment and more about shared experiences together.
Families travelling with children
Cunard may not be the first name people think of for family cruises, but Queen Anne does genuinely cater for younger guests.
There are dedicated children’s programmes, and from what I experienced onboard, families are made to feel very welcome rather than simply accommodated.
That said, this is not a ship built around children’s attractions or constant organised activities.
Instead, I think Queen Anne works best for families who enjoy spending time together in a more relaxed way, rather than relying on non-stop entertainment throughout the day.
Families with teenagers
Queen Anne could also work well for families with older children and teenagers, particularly those who are happy to be more independent onboard.
There is archery, mini-golf, pickleball and deck games for the whole family to enjoy, along with excellent theatre entertainment.
There is plenty of space to relax, enjoy live music, explore different venues and spend time together as a family in the evenings.
Teenagers who enjoy a slightly more grown-up environment, without it feeling too formal or restrictive, are likely to adapt well here.
Multi-generational family holidays
Where Queen Anne really stands out is for multi-generational family cruising. This is where she absolutely comes into her own.
Grandparents, parents and children can all enjoy the same holiday, but in very different ways. Whether it’s a quiet afternoon in the lounges, a formal evening meal, or time spent together on sea days, the ship naturally lends itself to that balance.
There is a real sense of shared experience, but also space for everyone to do their own thing.
The feel of life onboard
One of the things that struck me most during my visit was the atmosphere onboard Queen Anne.
It feels elegant, but not intimidating. Relaxed, but still with a sense of occasion.
There are beautiful public spaces, plenty of quiet corners, and a real emphasis on service and attention to detail. It creates a very different pace of holiday compared to more activity-led cruise ships.
For some families, that slower, more considered style is exactly what they are looking for.
Is Queen Anne the right fit for your family?
One thing I’ve learned after helping many families plan cruise holidays is that the best ship is always the one that matches your family’s personality and expectations.
Some families want high-energy entertainment and constant activity. Others prefer a more relaxed, refined experience where the focus is on spending time together.
Queen Anne sits firmly in the second category, but with a surprisingly warm welcome for families.
If your family enjoys beautiful surroundings, excellent service and a more traditional cruise experience, there is a lot to like here.
My final thoughts
Queen Anne left a very strong impression on me.
She feels elegant, calm and beautifully designed, with a genuine sense of hospitality throughout.
While she may not be a traditional family-focused ship in the same way as some of the larger cruise lines, I absolutely think she is a fantastic option for the right family, particularly multi-generational groups.
For families who value quality time together, shared experiences and a slightly more refined pace of holiday, Queen Anne really delivers.
