Samoëns is a superb choice for a short ski break. Easy to reach, offering fantastic intermediate skiing, great mountain restaurants and a genuinely charming alpine village atmosphere.

We flew from Belfast to Geneva Airport, followed by a transfer of just over an hour to the resort, making it one of the most accessible ski destinations in the French Alps for a long weekend.

Samoëns forms part of the Grand Massif, one of the largest linked ski areas in France with around 265km of pistes. The skiing here is particularly appealing for intermediates, with a wonderful selection of wide, scenic blue runs that allow skiers to cruise comfortably across the mountain. From Samoëns, we had access up to the main ski area around Flaine, where the snow record is excellent thanks to its higher altitude. The terrain is varied and expansive, with long sweeping pistes, tree-lined descents and stunning views across the Mont Blanc massif.  There are numerous welcoming mountain restaurants dotted around the slopes, perfect for a relaxed lunch in the sunshine. Many serve traditional Savoyard dishes such as tartiflette and croûtes, alongside lighter options, and the large sun terraces make them ideal spots to take a break and enjoy the alpine scenery.

The village of Samoëns itself is one of the prettiest resorts in the Alps. Unlike many purpose-built ski stations, it is a traditional Savoyard village with a historic square, stone buildings and a relaxed, authentic atmosphere. In the evenings there is a very good selection of restaurants, from cosy local bistros serving regional specialities to more contemporary dining options, making it a lovely place to wander and enjoy dinner after a day on the slopes.

During our stay we were based at Hotel Neige et Roc, a charming, family-run alpine hotel just a short walk from the centre of the village. The property has a warm and welcoming atmosphere, comfortable rooms and excellent facilities including a spa area with indoor pool, sauna and steam room, perfect for relaxing after skiing! The food was also a highlight, we stayed on a Bed and breakfast basis but also opted for 2 delicious evening meals.

We were incredibly lucky with the conditions during our trip. The higher slopes had excellent snow coverage, allowing us to fully explore the Grand Massif, while the weather was beautifully clear and sunny for most of our stay. Bluebird skies, great snow and quiet midweek slopes made for a fantastic four days of skiing.

Overall, Samoëns is a superb choice for a short ski break. Easy to reach, offering fantastic intermediate skiing, great mountain restaurants and a genuinely charming alpine village atmosphere. ⛷️❄️
