Exploring the Heart & Soul of Brazil: My Unforgettable Familiarisation Trip

October 2025

Claire Jackson on 22 Oct 2025

Brazil has always called to me - a place bursting with colour, rhythm, history, and the promise of adventure. Recently, I had the privilege of joining a Travel Counsellors familiarisation trip to this extraordinary country. From the golden beaches of Rio to the cobbled streets of colonial towns, I immersed myself in Brazil’s magnetic energy and diverse experiences. Here’s a glimpse into my journey, and why Brazil could be the destination that transforms your next holiday.

Touchdown in Rio de Janeiro

After a seamless 9-hour flight from Lisbon, I arrived in the legendary city of Rio de Janeiro: a city where rainforest-clad mountains tumble into golden sands, and the pulse of samba is never far away. Our first day was all about easing into Brazilian life - relaxing at Copacabana Beach, feeling the warmth of the sun, and soaking up the electric atmosphere from the shade of a palm tree.

The following day began with one of the world’s most iconic sights: Christ the Redeemer. Standing atop Corcovado Mountain, arms open to embrace the city, it’s an experience that’s just as humbling as it is awe-inspiring. After a flavoursome lunch downtown, our day ended with a magical sunset from Sugarloaf Mountain - watching the city lights emerge below as the sky turned pink and gold.

Into the Heart of Minas Gerais: Petropolis & Tiradentes

As we arrived in Tiradentes, I was instantly captivated. This small colonial town is truly a step back in time: beautifully preserved baroque buildings, winding cobblestone streets, colourful facades, artisan boutiques, and the gentle hum of local restaurants and bars. The atmosphere is relaxed, vibrant, and utterly welcoming - a place where time slows and every corner reveals a new delight.

The Magic of Ouro Preto

For our last night, we explored Ouro Preto, another colonial gem famed for its steep streets, baroque churches, and its colourful role in Brazil’s gold rush. We trekked through Parque das Andorinhas, cooled off in natural waterfalls, and even ventured into an old gold mine for a glimpse of history beneath the surface. Wandering the atmospheric squares and alleyways, I felt the spirit of Brazil’s past blending effortlessly with the creative buzz of the present.
