Fancy a Christmas Market Break? Your Questions Answered

When do Christmas markets open, which is best and how many days do you need? I answer the most asked Christmas market questions and share my favourite markets, from Vienna and Prague to Edinburgh and Belfast, with flights from most UK and Irish airports.

Thinking about a Christmas market break this year?

Here are the answers to the most asked Christmas market questions, from when the markets open to how many days you need, plus my favourite markets and flights from Belfast, Dublin, Edinburgh, Manchester, London and most UK and Irish regional airports.

Prague Christmas Markets

There's something about a Christmas market. The fairy lights, the smell of mulled wine and roasting chestnuts, a gingerbread heart you'll never eat, and that moment you wrap your gloves round a warm mug in a snowy square and think, yes, this is Christmas.

The good news? Your nearest airport is closer to a Christmas market than you think. With flights from Belfast, Dublin, Edinburgh, Manchester, London and many other regional airports across the UK and Ireland, a festive break can be as easy as a long weekend.

I get asked the same questions every year, so here are the answers, plus my favourite markets and exactly where you can fly from. Sleigh optional.

Your Christmas market questions, answered

When do the Christmas markets open in 2026?

Most open in mid to late November and run until Christmas Eve, with some carrying on into early January. Here are this year's dates for my favourites. Dates can change, so always double check with the market's official website, or just ask me and I'll check for you before you book:

Christmas Market Dates 2026

When is the best time to go?

Late November and the first two weeks of December are the sweet spot. Everything is open, the atmosphere is in full swing and it's not yet peak Christmas week. If you can, go midweek or arrive on a Thursday, as Saturday evenings are the busiest. Dusk is the magic hour, when the lights come on.

How many days do I need?

Two or three nights is perfect for one city. That gives you time for the markets, a concert or a spa, and a long lunch without rushing. If you want to see several markets, a Danube or Rhine river cruise is a brilliant way to visit a different one every day and only unpack once.

Which Christmas market is the best?

It depends on what you love. Vienna is the elegant classic. Salzburg and Prague are pure fairytale. Strasbourg calls itself the Capital of Christmas. Budapest gives you markets and thermal baths in one trip. For something closer to home, Edinburgh and Belfast are fun, festive and easy to reach. Tell me what you're after and I'll match you to the right one.

Edinburgh Magical Christmas Festival and Markets

Are Christmas market breaks expensive?

They don't have to be. A cosy two nighter with flights and a central hotel can be very good value, especially from a regional airport. Or you can go full boujee with a five star suite, private transfers and a Christmas concert. I'll find the best quotes and offers for your budget.

What should I wear?

Think layers, not one big coat. A warm, waterproof jacket, comfortable boots with grip (cobbles get slippy), a hat, scarf and gloves you can use your phone in. Central Europe can drop below freezing, especially in the evenings.

Do I need cash?

Most stalls now take cards, but it's handy to have some euros for the smaller stalls. In Austria and Germany, you'll often pay a small deposit on your mulled wine mug. Hand it back for your money, or keep it as a souvenir.

Are Christmas markets good for families?

Absolutely. Many have ice rinks, carousels, Santa's grottos and children's programmes, and Vienna's Rathausplatz has a whole area for little ones. Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens is a fairytale for all ages.

Are the markets open on Christmas Day?

Most close on Christmas Eve or before, but some stay open into the New Year, including Edinburgh, Prague, Salzburg and Copenhagen. Double check the dates above before you book, or ask me and I'll confirm them for you.

Copenhagen Christmas Markets

My favourite Christmas markets, and where to fly from

Vienna, Austria: the grande dame of Christmas

I've been, and it's the classic for a reason. The market on Rathausplatz glows in front of City Hall, giant crystal chandeliers light up the Graben, and St Stephen's Cathedral looks unreal in the snow. Add a Sachertorte in a grand café and a Christmas concert, and you'll be hooked.

Fly from: most UK and Irish airports, including Belfast, Dublin, London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Edinburgh, direct or with an easy connection

Salzburg, Austria: Silent Night country

Mozart's city sits beneath a hilltop fortress, with the Christkindlmarkt glowing on the Baroque squares below. It's the home of Silent Night, and a sleigh ride or Alpine day trip makes it extra special.

Fly from: most UK and Irish airports, including Belfast, Manchester, London, Birmingham, Bristol and Dublin, direct or with an easy connection

Edinburgh, Scotland: och aye, it's pure braw

As a proud Scot, I'm biased, but there's nothing like Princes Street Gardens at Christmas, with the castle looking down on the stalls, the big wheel and the lights. Stay at The Witchery or Prestonfield for pure drama, and stick around for Hogmanay.

Get there: fly from Belfast, Dublin, London, Birmingham, Bristol and many other UK and Irish airports, or take the train from across the UK

Belfast, Northern Ireland: keepin' it lit, so it is

Right on my doorstep. City Hall lights up and its grounds fill with stalls from across Europe, with cosy pubs, Titanic Belfast and the Giant's Causeway all close by. A brilliant festive weekend from anywhere in the UK.

Get there: fly from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and many other UK airports, or take the ferry from Scotland or Liverpool

Budapest, Hungary: mulled wine and a thermal bath

The Advent market at St Stephen's Basilica has a light show on its façade, and there's hot chocolate with a view of Parliament along the Danube. Then soak it all off in a steaming thermal bath. Yes please.

Fly from: most UK and Irish airports, including Belfast, Dublin, Edinburgh, London, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol, direct or with an easy connection

Prague, Czechia: a fairytale in the snow

The giant tree in Old Town Square beneath the Týn Church is one of the most magical sights in Europe, and Wenceslas Square has its own market too. Cobbled lanes, the castle district and cosy beer halls do the rest.

Fly from: most UK and Irish airports, including Dublin, London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh and Belfast, direct or with an easy connection

Strasbourg, France: the Capital of Christmas

Light angels lead the way to the cathedral, and half timbered houses drip with decorations. Colmar's fairytale market is a short train ride away, and the Alsace wine is a bonus.

Fly from: most UK and Irish airports, including Edinburgh, Manchester, London, Birmingham, Bristol, Belfast and Dublin, direct or with an easy connection

Copenhagen, Denmark: hygge, done properly

Tivoli Gardens lights up like a film set, with cosy market stalls, twinkling canals and some of the best restaurants in Europe. Perfect for couples, families and anyone who loves Scandi style.

Fly from: most UK and Irish airports, including Dublin, Edinburgh, London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Belfast, direct or with an easy connection

These are just some of the airports you can fly from. Many other regional airports across the UK and Ireland fly to these cities too, either direct or with an easy connection. Routes and schedules vary by season and day of the week, so I'll double check the best options from your nearest airport when I quote.

Your market, your way

Every budget, every kind of sparkle:

Cosy: two nights, flights and a central hotel. Perfect for a girls' weekend or a festive first.

Boutique: three nights in a characterful hotel, with a Christmas concert or a guided market night.

Boujee: a five star suite, private transfers and champagne at the market, or a Danube river cruise visiting a different market every day.
