Quiet please?

Let me be clear. I’m not a huge lover of crowds.

I’ve been to some incredible concerts over the years, but you’d never see me packed in at the front. I like to have my space.

Therefore, it always makes me chuckle when I think of visiting the Maldives. This is an island nation that is world renowned for being the ultimate ‘get away from it all’ destination. A place of calm, and yet an arrivals hall at Male airport that is possibly the most wonderful example of busy, organised chaos I’ve ever witnessed! Don’t be fooled though, it’s a small hall and a small price to pay for what comes next.... heaven on earth.

The key to a Maldivian holiday is finding the right island for you. If you’re hell bent on packing not much more than a handful of books, sun cream and no shoes, then of course you’ll be spoilt for choice. However, the trope that this is all that the Maldives has to offer, is far from the truth. There are plenty of options for those who don’t like ‘quiet’.

If you’re seeking island beauty without the isolation, then Meeru Island has a strong entertainment and party atmosphere vibe; it’s not wild Ibiza style clubbing but it offers the right energy for those who love to socialise. Kuramathi falls within the same category, it’s a larger island and therefore there are more bars and restaurants to explore. It’s a great mix of resort luxury and lively evenings.

Looking for a familiar name in hospitality? Look no further than the Hard Rock Hotel. It’s all about the music and only a short speedboat ride from the airport too.

Komandoo is a leading Adults Only resort and although not a ‘lively resort’ it suits those looking for more ocean activity during the daytime. It has some of the best diving and snorkelling experiences that you can find. It boasts its own house reef and it’s not unusual to find turtles and black tip reef sharks swimming leisurely by. It comes highly recommended.

Ultimately, it’s the beauty of this island nation which should be the main reason for visiting and no matter where you choose to stay, you’re going to feel a sense of space. However, those who worry that there is very little to do, don’t let that deter you from experiencing this piece of paradise. Just reach out and I’ll find you an island that works perfectly for you.

It does exist.
