Your Honeymoon, Your Story: How to Plan a Trip You’ll Never Forget

Daragh Hanafin on 01 Apr 2026

Planning your honeymoon should feel exciting, not overwhelming. For many couples, it’s one of the most memorable trips they’ll ever take, a chance to celebrate, unwind after the wedding, and start married life with something truly special. But with so many incredible destinations, different times of year to consider, and endless styles of travel, knowing where to begin can sometimes feel like the hardest part. That’s exactly where I come in. Whether you’re dreaming of barefoot luxury in the Maldives, a once-in-a-lifetime safari, a romantic Caribbean escape, or something completely unique to the two of you, this guide is here to help you start shaping a honeymoon that feels just right. Because your honeymoon should be as unique as your love story.

Your Honeymoon, Your Story: How to Plan a Trip You’ll Never Forget

There are a lot of holidays you’ll take in your life.

But your honeymoon? That’s different.

Ask almost any married couple and they’ll be able to tell you exactly where they went on honeymoon. The hotel, the moments, the little details, they stay with you.

That’s why I always say: your honeymoon should feel right, for you.

Not perfect. Not overthought. Just completely right for the two of you.

Because this isn’t just another trip.

It’s the beginning of your next chapter together.

A Honeymoon Should Be as Unique as Your Love Story

There’s a common idea that honeymoons have to look a certain way, white sand beaches, overwater villas and sunset cocktails.

And yes, those iconic trips are popular for a reason.

When people first start thinking about honeymoons, there are always a few destinations that instantly come to mind.

• the Maldives for barefoot luxury and overwater villas

• a safari and wine-country escape in South Africa

• the Caribbean romance of Saint Lucia

• and the exotic beauty of Thailand

These are some of the iconic honeymoon destinations that many couples have always dreamed about.

But beyond the classics, there’s a whole world of possibilities, from cultural adventures in Asia to expedition cruises and once-in-a-lifetime wildlife journeys.

Your honeymoon doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s.

It can be half beach, half adventure.

It can be culture and exploration.

It can be a cruise, a safari, a multi-centre trip through Vietnam, or even something totally out of the box like the Galápagos Islands or Antarctica.

The best honeymoons are the ones that reflect you as a couple.

Finding the Right Balance

One thing I often help couples with is finding the balance between different travel styles.

Very often one person wants to completely switch off on a beach, while the other wants to explore, see culture and go on adventures.

The beauty is, you absolutely can have both.

That might mean a safari followed by a luxury beach stay.

A few days exploring Japan, followed by a beautiful resort.

A tour through Thailand with some downtime in the middle.

This is where having someone help piece it together properly really makes a difference.

When You Go Matters

Timing plays a huge part in planning the right honeymoon.

For some couples, dates are fixed.

If you’re a teacher, tied to annual leave, or have a wedding date that means you can only travel during certain periods, then we start with when you can go and work out which destinations are at their best during that time.

For others, there’s flexibility.

Then I love starting with your wish list.

Where have you always dreamed of going?

What’s on your bucket list?

Once we know that, we can work out the best time of year to make that trip truly special.

When Should You Start Planning?

One thing I always say is: the earlier we start, the better.

Ideally, I love to begin planning around 12/18 months in advance, especially if you have your heart set on something really special.

 This gives you:

• the best choice of flights

• better hotel availability

• access to those dream room types

• more time to secure special experiences and excursions

• and often better pricing

For honeymoons in particular, the most sought-after suites, villas and room categories tend to go first.

The earlier we plan, the more choice you have.

And another huge benefit?

It gives you longer to pay it off.

Most honeymoons need to be paid in full around 12 weeks before departure, so by planning early, you can spread the cost in manageable instalments over a much longer period.

That often makes those bigger, once-in-a-lifetime trips feel far more achievable.

And the best part?

You’re not doing the hard work.

You simply give me the guidance, your style, your wish list, your budget, your must-haves, and I take it from there.

I do all the research, bring the ideas together, and build something that feels seamless and special.

It’s Not Just Where You Go, It’s How It’s Put Together

This is the part most people don’t always think about at first.

A honeymoon isn’t just about choosing the destination.

It’s about making sure every single part of the journey works beautifully together.

That means:

• the right room type

• the best flights for your journey

• private transfers

• airport lounge access

• airport parking

• carefully chosen excursions and experiences

• all the little touches that elevate the whole trip

These are the details that turn a holiday into a honeymoon.

Where I Come In

A lot of couples come to me saying:

“We don’t know where to go, and we don’t know where to start.”

And honestly, that’s fine.

My role isn’t just to book the trip.

It’s to help you work out:

• what type of honeymoon suits you best

• what works for your budget

• where is best at the right time of year

• how to balance relaxation and adventure

• and how to make the whole thing feel effortless

I bring it all together into one seamless journey so all you need to do is enjoy it.

One of the Biggest Perks: Your Honeymoon Gift Registry

This is one of the most popular perks I offer, and nearly every couple who books their honeymoon with me uses it.

Instead of worrying about what guests should buy you, we create a honeymoon gift registry.

This gives your friends and family a simple link where they can contribute towards your honeymoon as their wedding gift.

It takes the hassle away for everyone.

And best of all, you’re receiving something you’ll genuinely treasure, experiences, memories and moments you’ll remember forever.

This can work in two ways:

• as a honeymoon fund if you haven’t chosen your destination yet

• or as contributions towards the balance of a honeymoon already booked

It’s one of those little touches that makes the whole process so much easier.

Mini-Moons, Delayed Honeymoons and Familymoons

Not everyone travels straight after the wedding anymore, and that’s absolutely fine.

Some couples choose a mini-moon, a few relaxing days away straight after the wedding.

Others delay the main honeymoon for budget, work or seasonal reasons.

And increasingly, I’m also helping plan what I call a familymoon, where children come along too.

There’s no right or wrong way.

It’s about what works best for you.

One thing I always advise is, if possible, travel within a year of getting married so you can still enjoy all the lovely honeymoon extras that hotels and resorts often provide.

One Final Thought

For many couples, this is the biggest trip you’ll take together for a while.

Sometimes it’s the trip where you spend a little more than you normally would.

Sometimes it’s the last big holiday as just the two of you before family holidays begin.

And sometimes it’s simply the trip you’ll always remember.

That’s why it deserves to be done properly.

Not with pressure.

Just with thought, care, and a trip that feels completely right for the two of you.

Because your honeymoon should be as unique as your love story.
