Prague – A Journey Through Europe’s Timeless Gem

David Ashworth on 15 Apr 2025

Discover the Magic of Prague: A City Break to Remember Rich in history and bursting with character, Prague is a destination that delights at every turn. From its cobbled streets lined with architectural wonders to riverside strolls and hearty Czech cuisine, this city is the perfect blend of old-world charm and vibrant energy. Whether you’re a foodie, a history enthusiast, or simply love exploring on foot, Prague offers an unforgettable city break just a short flight from the UK. Here’s how we made the most of our time in this captivating European gem.

Landing in Prague: The Allure Begins

A short flight from the UK, a swift airport transfer, and you’re right at the heart of Prague. Drop your bags, lace up your trainers, and get ready to wander—this is a city best explored on foot. On my visit, we clocked an impressive 22,000 steps on our first day alone!

Lunch at Černá Madona

What better way to kick off than with a local lunch? At Černá Madona, we shared a flavourful tapas selection: beef sandwich, duck, ham, Parmesan, olives, beetroot hummus, pickled onions, and artisan bread. For dessert, indulge in their legendary ice cream sundae. A perfect fuel for a walking day.

Travel Counsellor Tip:
Prague’s architectural marvels and historic streets are best appreciated at street-level. Join a guided walking tour on your first day—ours whisked us through the Old Town, the evocative Jewish Quarter, and finished at the iconic John Lennon Wall. It’s a brilliant way to get your bearings and soak up centuries of history.

Dinner Delights: Flavours of Prague

Dinner in Prague celebrates the country’s hearty cuisine. Think goulash, grilled sausage, ribs, steak, apple strudel, and a glass of local beer or crisp Prosecco. Don’t miss a taste of the traditional ‘firewater’ for a truly local experience!

Day Two: Culture & Views

Prague Castle

Prague Castle is Europe’s largest ancient castle complex—don’t underestimate the time you’ll want to spend here. With a two-day ticket, you can truly immerse yourself in its courtyards, art, statues, and the awe-inspiring cathedral (even during renovations). We braved the ‘hard way’—an uphill walk with steps. For a more relaxing start, take public transport or a taxi!

Travel Counsellor Tip:
Back your fitness and climb the 287 tower steps (€8 extra). The panoramic views over Prague are nothing short of breathtaking.

River Cruise & Cloud 9 Sky Bar

After exploring the castle, treat yourself to a leisurely river cruise—a relaxing way to admire the cityscape from the water, complete with local commentary.
As evening falls, savour sunset cocktails at Cloud 9 Sky Bar for spellbinding vistas over the castle’s spires.

Dinner that night? Try a truly local restaurant with menus in Czech. Don’t panic—translation apps like Google Lens are a lifesaver. We dined at Holešovická Sedma: authentic food, friendly service, unbeatable value.

Day Three: Modern Sights & Local Discoveries

  • Wenceslas Square: Retail therapy starts here.
  • Breakfast: Café Revoluční for coffee and pastries.
  • Family Fun: Vytopna Railway Restaurant, where your drinks arrive by model train—perfect for kids and big kids alike!
  • Onwards to the River: Meander through Charles Park and down to the striking Dancing House.

Sports Lovers:
While the rest of my party shopped, Corey & I explored the fascinating AC Sparta Prague stadium—highly recommended for fans.

Dinner:
U Houbare—exuding Czech hospitality with traditional cuisine, welcoming atmosphere and excellent value.

Day Four: Farewell, Prague

A grey, drizzly morning called for a local breakfast at Kafe Francine. After checking out, an easy Uber (£6) took us to Charles Bridge for one last wander—don’t let the crowds put you off, it’s all part of the charm.

Lunch at Kozlovna Apropos delivered classic Czech comfort food before a final visit to the vibrant Easter Market, brimming with festive treats and handmade crafts.

Mama Shelter Prague

Where to Stay:
We chose Mama Shelter Prague—fun, playful, and vibrant. Its style feels young and trendy, yet it welcomes all, from families to business travellers. Situated north of the Old Town (approx. 30 minutes’ walk or 5 minutes by taxi), it puts you close to authentic local restaurants, bars, cafes and bakeries.

  • Accommodation: Both the small double and large twin rooms were modern, quiet, and comfortable. Complimentary water, toiletries, and a lively ambience add character.
  • Facilities: Massive bar, terrace, games galore (pool, table football, arcade), and a DJ on selected evenings.
  • Breakfast: Extensive buffet (hot and cold) if you fancy.
  • Atmosphere: Warm, genuine service with a local edge.

If you prefer a taste of local life, being just outside the centre is a great option.

Why Prague?

Prague is perfect for those who love walking, architecture, history, food, and drink. Despite the crowds, it holds on to its charm, blending fairytale sights with unforgettable local experiences—a truly exceptional city break.
