Kefalonian bliss
We have been back since, but the last time was 12 years ago, so we were well overdue a return. This time we stayed in the lovely resort of Agia Effimia, on the east coast of the island.
We flew from East Midlands and arrived to warm sunshine in around 3.5 hours.
We had pre-booked a car to give us the opportunity to look round the island, as and when we could tear ourselves away from the sunloungers, and the drive to the resort was about 50 minutes from the airport. If you are planning to drive from the airport, note that the west coast road is currently closed (and has been for a while) due to a bridge repair, but there is an alternative route via the mountain road, which isn’t much longer.
The village of Agia Effimia is set around a small harbour, and has a great choice of tavernas, serving all the usual Greek favourites. Prices were a little cheaper than here, although the house wine was a lot cheaper! The bakery was a favourite place to visit for a take away cheese pie for lunch, which went well with some oregano crisps and a cup of tea! There are also 3 supermarkets to choose from, if you are self catering like we were.
We visited picturesque Assos and Fiscardo on one of our energetic days, which made a nice change, with lunch in the latter, where there are lots of restaurants to choose from, next to the harbour. It was quite busy there, with boat trips dropping people off to explore. Apparently late afternoon is a better time to go if you want to avoid the crowds.
On another day we went to Skala in the south, a place I hadn’t been to before. There is a long sand/shingle beach and uphill from there takes you to the main square and a pedestrianised area with restaurants and shops, where I managed to buy 3 bikinis for 75 Euros, which I thought was pretty good. We had a nice lunch and I can see why people like the resort.
Driving to these places, often gives you the opportunity to see some spectacular views, and we weren’t disappointed on that front.
This gem of a Greek island didn’t disappoint, and if we are fortunate enough to go back, we would more than likely stay in Agia Effimia again as it suited us perfectly.
If you are thinking of visiting Kefalonia, and would like me to plan your trip, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
