My Luxury Escape for a 50th Birthday Celebration
Learn all about my recent family trip to Dubai.
This February I escaped the grey UK winter and headed to Dubai for five nights of sunshine, skyline views and a very special celebration: my husband’s 50th birthday. We travelled as a family of three, flying from Manchester to Dubai with Emirates from 15- 20 February 2026, and based ourselves on the iconic Palm Jumeirah.
If you are dreaming of winter warmth, stylish hotels and a city that mixes beach, desert and futuristic skyline, Dubai is a fantastic option that I can tailor to many different budgets and styles of travel. Here is a glimpse into my own trip and some honest, first‑hand tips.
Where We Stayed: Fairmont The Palm
We stayed at Fairmont The Palm on a half‑board basis, and it was a brilliant choice for a special occasion luxury break with a teenager in tow. The hotel has that classic five‑star feel: elegant, relaxed, with a great beachfront position and beautiful views back across to the Dubai Marina skyline.
We upgraded to a Gold level room which included access to the Gold Lounge. In my view, this is absolutely worth paying extra for if your budget allows. Having lounge access really enhanced the whole experience:
- We enjoyed a quieter, more exclusive space to relax.
- Food and drinks included at set times, which adds a lot of value in an otherwise very expensive city. High Tea from 3-5pm and canapes & cocktails from 5-7pm were served every day.
- The team offered attentive service that makes the stay feel that bit more special and seamless.
On a half‑board basis, we also found it helpful to have two meals a day already covered, especially given how quickly costs can add up in Dubai.
Dining Highlight: Frevo at Fairmont The Palm
One of the real highlights of the hotel was Frevo, the Brazilian restaurant at Fairmont The Palm.
If you enjoy a lively atmosphere and fantastic grilled meats, this is an excellent choice. It was a real experience rather than “just a meal out” and felt perfect for a celebration trip. I would highly recommend it to clients staying at the Fairmont or nearby on The Palm. My teenager was in his element and loved the concept.
First Impressions: A Balmy Winter City
February was a brilliant time to visit Dubai. We enjoyed:
- 25-28 degrees Celsius most days,
- No humidity,
- It was warm enough for the pool and beach, but comfortable for exploring the city.
This makes Dubai an ideal winter escape if you want guaranteed sunshine without the intensity of summer heat.
One thing to bear in mind: it can be hazy in the mornings, which is easy to forget when you get caught up in the excitement of planning. You are in the desert after all, so those early hours are not always crystal clear blue skies.
Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall & Fountain Tips
No first‑time trip to Dubai would be complete without the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, and they certainly delivered the wow factor.
We timed our Burj Khalifa visit around sunset, and this is something I strongly recommend:
- Mornings can be hazy, which can spoil those big views you have been looking forward to.
- At sunset you see the city in daylight, then as the sun dips the lights begin to shimmer across the skyline.
- You get two completely different atmospheres in one visit, which feels like much better value for both your time and your ticket.
The Dubai Mall itself is vast and packed with high‑end stores, eateries and attractions. It is also where you will find the famous Dubai Fountain show, which is spectacular, but attracts very large crowds at ground level.
My top insider tip:
Instead of standing crammed against the railings outside, head up into the mall
and position yourself near the Apple Store or Nike Store for a
brilliant elevated view of the fountain show. You still enjoy the music and the
drama, but without being sandwiched in the heaviest crowds.
Attractions We Loved
We made it a busy but rewarding few days and managed to fit in a great mix of experiences:
- Burj Khalifa: Iconic and absolutely worth doing, especially at sunset.
- Dubai Mall: Shopping, people‑watching and a real sense of the city’s scale and ambition with an indoor ice rink and fantastic aquarium.
- Dubai Frame: A striking architectural landmark with impressive city views.
- Atlantis Aquarium: A big hit for all ages, and a nice balance to the more “urban” experiences.
- Dubai Eye: Another fantastic way to enjoy Dubai from above.
- Marina boat trip: We took a boat from the Dubai Marina out towards the Burj Al Arab, which gives you a completely different perspective on the skyline and coastline. This was one of those highlight moments that really sticks in your memory.
- Souks & Museum of the Future area: We passed by the traditional souks and made a stop near the Museum of the Future, which is every bit as striking in person as it looks in photos.
We packed in a lot, but Dubai has so much to offer that it is very easy to run out of time, even on a fairly full itinerary.
Getting Around & The Cost Of Dubai
We used Uber regularly, and I found it:
- Reliable,
- Easy to arrange,
- Surprisingly inexpensive compared with what you might expect in a luxury destination.
Where the costs really add up is in day‑to‑day spends, particularly on food and drink. As a guide, we paid around £12 for a single bottle of beer, which gives you a sense of how quickly extras can mount up.
This is where good planning and the right board basis make a difference. Choosing half‑board, or upgrading to a room with lounge privileges, can help manage overall spend without compromising the luxury feel. When I am planning Dubai trips for clients, I always factor this in so that there are fewer surprises on the ground.
A Note On Views & Haze
One practical tip from our own experience:
- Dubai can be hazy first thing in the morning, so if you are considering a sunrise trip to the top of the Burj Khalifa, you might not get the crystal‑clear vistas you are imagining.
- My recommendation is to book for later in the day, ideally sunset into evening, when visibility is often better and you get to see the city both in daylight and lit up after dark.
Little timing tweaks like this can really elevate the whole experience.
What We Will Do Next Time
We enjoyed Dubai so much that we are already planning to return next February. On our list for the next trip:
- A desert safari, to experience dune landscapes, sunset in the desert and possibly a traditional dinner under the stars.
- The aquarium at Dubai Mall, which we did not manage to fit in this time.
- More time in the souks, to soak up the more traditional side of the city.
- Slower days with more downtime, including:
- JBR Beach
- Kite Beach
- A selection of beach clubs
Dubai really lends itself to repeat visits, where you can layer new experiences onto a familiar base, and fine‑tune the balance between activity and relaxation.
How I Can Help You Plan Your Own Dubai Escape
From our own trip, I was reminded how important it is to:
- Choose the right area and hotel for your travel style and budget.
- Consider board basis and lounge access carefully to manage on‑the‑ground costs.
- Time key experiences like Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain to avoid the worst crowds and make the most of the views.
If you are thinking about Dubai for a winter sun escape, special celebration or family break, I can create stress‑free, tailored planning that fits your priorities and budget, whether you want all‑out luxury or something more modest but still special.
