Trace the coast from Durban to the Eastern Cape
Top Experiences
Surf breaks, wetlands, Zulu history, and wildlife shape this stretch of the Indian Ocean coast.
Ride Durban’s Golden Mile
A city built around the beach
Durban’s Golden Mile runs beside the Indian Ocean, with beaches and surf breaks linked by a long promenade. Walk or cycle the beachfront, watch the surfers at the piers, or head to uShaka Marine World at the southern end. Beyond the sand, the city’s Indian and Zulu influences show up in its markets, street food and curry houses.
Explore iSimangaliso Wetland Park
Estuary, forest, dunes, and reef
North of Durban, iSimangaliso brings together coastal forest, wetlands, lakes and Indian Ocean shoreline. Near St Lucia, take a boat trip on the estuary and look for hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds. Farther up the coast, Sodwana Bay is known for diving and snorkelling over coral reefs. Each part of the park has its own landscape, from Lake St Lucia to the wooded dunes and open sea.
Visit the KwaZulu-Natal battlefields
Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift
The hills around Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift were the setting for two major battles of the Anglo-Zulu War in 1879. Guided visits help explain the events and the ground on which they unfolded. Take time at both sites to understand their distinct stories and the people who fought and died here.
Cruise Lake Jozini
Wildlife below the Lebombo Mountains
Lake Jozini fills the valley below the Lebombo range. A boat trip offers a different view of the landscape, with chances to see hippos in the water, elephants along the banks and birdlife above the shoreline. The lake is also known for tiger fishing, with guided fishing trips available for those who want to try their luck.
Walk the Wild Coast
Cliffs, beaches and Xhosa heritage
In the Eastern Cape, the Wild Coast follows a long stretch of rugged shoreline, with green hills, river valleys and beaches below the cliffs. At Coffee Bay, a guided walk leads to Hole in the Wall, a sea-carved rock arch at the mouth of the Mpako River. The region is also part of the Xhosa heartland, with local heritage and community life closely tied to the land.
Go on safari in the Eastern Cape
Game drives at Pumba
At Pumba Private Game Reserve, morning and afternoon game drives take you out with a guide to look for the Big Five and other wildlife. The reserve is also home to free-roaming white lions. Safari here makes a change of pace from the coast, with time in the bush and the chance to see wildlife in a different setting.
Try Durban’s bunny chow
Curry served the Durban way
Tear into a soft loaf filled with hot curry: the bread soaks up the thick, spice-scented gravy, and the piece scooped from the middle becomes a handy mop. Fillings range from lamb and chicken to beans, with the heat building as you eat. Born in Durban’s Indian community, bunny chow is now a city staple; order one from a local café or takeaway.
Order seafood by the coast
Fresh catch from the Indian Ocean
Choose grilled fish, prawns or oysters, and look for a little char from the grill, a squeeze of lemon and the salt of the sea in the air. Durban and Umhlanga have beachfront spots and restaurants around Florida Road; farther up the coast, ask what’s in season. The fish changes, but the appeal of a simple seafood lunch by the water doesn’t.
Find a shisa nyama
Meat grilled over open coals
At a shisa nyama, the coals glow, meat sizzles on the grill and smoke carries the promise of lunch. It’s often served with soft pap and chakalaka, whose chilli and tomato bring a sharper edge to each mouthful. In Umlazi, local eateries serve shisa nyama alongside other South African dishes; a township food tour can add local history to the meal.
Try umngqusho in the Eastern Cape
Xhosa cooking with maize and beans
Umngqusho simmers dried maize and beans until tender, making a hearty dish with a soft, earthy bite. It’s often served with a savoury meat stew. Xhosa cooking also uses rhabe, a wild spinach with a lemony scent, and amasi, fermented milk with a tangy taste. Look out for these dishes at local eateries and food experiences in the Eastern Cape.
Pumba Private Game Reserve
Safari days in the Eastern Cape bushveld
Pumba Private Game Reserve spans bushveld and lake country in the malaria-free Eastern Cape. Morning and afternoon drives take you out with a guide to look for the Big Five and the reserve’s free-roaming white and tawny lions. With meals and snacks included back at the lodge, pause over lunch, watch the light move across the water, and listen to the bush settle before the next drive.
Pumba Msenge Bush Lodge
Private decks among the bushveld
Msenge Bush Lodge’s 11 glass-enclosed, thatched chalets open onto the Pumba bushveld. Each has a private timber deck with a plunge pool and outdoor shower. After a drive, rinse in the open air, then settle by the fireplace as evening sounds travel through the bush. The deck gives you space to watch the light fade over the reserve between outings.
Pumba Water Lodge
Thatched chalets overlooking Lake Cariega
Pumba Water Lodge’s 12 stone-walled, thatched chalets look across Lake Cariega. Step from the deck into your plunge pool or use the outdoor shower, with the lake and bush in view. Mornings bring changing light across the water; after cooler evening drives, a fireplace warms the chalet. A spacious bathroom and private viewing deck make it easy to slow down between game drives.
Hlosi Game Lodge
Grassland views and family game drives
Hlosi sits on a hillside above the Bushman’s River plain in Amakhala Game Reserve. Suites and safari tents look over open grassland towards a waterhole, where wildlife may come to drink. Two guided game drives run each day; between them, families can cool off in the pool or gather in the boma as dinner cooks over the fire. A children’s programme adds activities for younger guests.

TC Tips
Our experts know South Africa's East Coast inside out
“With malaria-free safaris and amazing value compared to other areas of the country, Kwa-Zulu Natal is ideal for families. The climate is perfect for a year-round break, with the Indian Ocean on the coast, the Drakensberg Mountains inland, and iSimangaliso Wetland Park’s rich birdlife nearby. It can also be much quieter than other areas.”
Louise Mitchell, Travel Counsellor
“KwaZulu-Natal is a three-in-one destination where coast, history and safari come together. From relaxing along the coastline and immersing yourself in the vibrant culture of Zulu heritage to exploring battlefield history, the region also offers rugged landscapes, slow-paced safari encounters, and first-class food and wine.”
