An African Adventure So Good It Should Come With a Warning

The Ultimate African Multi Country Adventure

Donna Gilbert on 22 Dec 2025

From gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda to safaris in Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa, discover the ultimate African adventure. Designed with heart, humour and expert planning by me.

This Itinerary Is Dangerous

Once you read it, you will want to do it. Immediately. Possibly while Googling flights with one hand and messaging me with the other.

This was a three week African adventure I personally designed back in 2022 for early 2023. Flights booked. Lodges selected. Excitement levels through the roof.

Then life happened. I discovered I would be three months pregnant at the time of travel and gorilla trekking felt a bit ambitious. Sensible decision made. Adventure postponed. Dream very much alive.

So instead of travelling it myself, I have been doing the next best thing. Creating unforgettable African adventures for my clients and living vicariously through their photos. You are welcome.

Stop One: Uganda

The Pearl of Africa and the Start of Something Special

Uganda eases you into Africa beautifully. Warm, welcoming and wonderfully diverse.

Where to stay:
HBT Russell Hotel in Kampala for three nights.

What you experience:

  • A visit to the Equator because standing in two hemispheres at once is always a good idea
  • A full day gorilla trek in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Life changing. Emotional. Goosebumps guaranteed

Meeting mountain gorillas in the wild is one of those moments that stays with you forever. There is nothing quite like locking eyes with a silverback and realising just how privileged you are to be there.

We were on a tight schedule, but you could also experience:

  • Shoebill watching in Entebbe
  • Kibale Forest National Park
  • Lake Mburo National Park
  • Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
  • Murchison Falls National Park
  • A boat safari down the Kazinga Channel
  • Queen Elizabeth National Park
  • Sipi Falls
  • Kidepo Valley National Park
  • Kasubi Tombs
  • The authentic and original source of the Nile
  • Budongo Forest chimpanzee tracking

Stop Two: Rwanda

Intimate, Powerful and Utterly Unforgettable

From Uganda, you head into Rwanda. Small country. Huge impact.

Where to stay:
La Paillotte Gorilla Place in Kinigi for two nights. Perfectly placed for gorilla trekking.

What you experience:

  • Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park
  • A visit to Dian Fossey’s former camp and final resting place

This part of the journey is powerful. Rwanda does conservation brilliantly and you feel it in every interaction.

Next stop is Kigali.

Where to stay:
2000 Hotel Downtown for one night.

Kigali is clean, modern and quietly impressive. A perfect pause before the next adventure.

What you experience:

  • Genocide Memorial
  • Kigali walking tour
  • niyo arts center

Stop Three: Zambia

Where the Wild Really Begins

You fly into Lusaka and Africa steps things up a notch.

Where to stay:
Asmara Hotel in Lusaka for two nights.

What you experience:

  • A walking safari

Walking safaris are exhilarating. No vehicle. No barrier. Just you, your guide and the African bush. Your senses switch on in a way they never have before.

Then it is off to Livingstone.

Where to stay:
Ngoma Zanga Lodge for four nights. A fabulous base with incredible views and warm hospitality.

What you experience:

  • A safari day trip into Botswana
  • Victoria Falls from the Zambia side (and Devil’s Pool). Expect spray, rainbows and sheer awe
  • Lunch at the Elephant Cafe. Dining with rescued elephants is exactly as magical as it sounds

This is one of those places where every day feels like a pinch me moment.

Stop Four: Zimbabwe

Raw, Real and Remarkable

Zimbabwe delivers safari drama in the best possible way.

Where to stay:
Bayete Guest Lodge for two nights.

What to experience:

  • A safari in Hwange National Park
  • Victoria Falls from the Zimbabwe side

Hwange is vast and wildlife rich. Think elephants by the hundreds, big cats and endless open space.

Then you fly to Harare.

Where to stay:
Two nights in Harare.

What you experience:

  • A day at Wild Is Life Wildlife Sanctuary

This is conservation at its most heartfelt. Up close, ethical and incredibly moving.

Stop Five: South Africa

Urban Cool Meets Natural Beauty

Your African adventure finishes with style in South Africa.

Where to stay:
V and A Waterfront in Cape Town.

Cape Town is one of those cities that has it all. Mountains, beaches, culture, food and energy.

What you experience:

  • Table Mountain hike
  • Boulders Beach penguins. Yes actual penguins
  • Robben Island
  • Shark cage diving for the brave
  • Two nights in Stellenbosch with winery tours

Wine tasting after weeks of adventure feels very well deserved.

Then you fly home with a camera roll full of memories.

The One That Got Away

We desperately wanted to add the Rovos Rail journey to Cape Town. Sadly our budget said no at the time.

But mark my words. One day I will be sipping champagne on that train.
