Jet-Set City Lights & Desert-Island Vibes: Singapore & Maldives

Donna Richmond on 16 Aug 2025

City lights, skyline swims and barefoot beach luxury: my 3-night Singapore stopover and third-time Maldives escape at Raaya by Atmosphere felt like pure bliss.

Some holidays just land at exactly the right time in life. Our recent twin-centre trip to Singapore and the Maldives was one of those: a perfect blend of city energy and barefoot island bliss.

We started with three nights in Singapore, staying at The Clan, then flew on to the Maldives for a stay at Raaya by Atmosphere in a two-bedroom beach villa with our own pool. It felt relaxed and luxurious, but also fun, and it gave us so many little moments that I know I will remember for a long time.

From Transit Hub To “Wow”: Why We Finally Did Singapore

We had actually travelled through Singapore many times before, always using Changi as a connection point on long-haul journeys. I had passed through the airport more than six times and never once left. Changi itself is a bit of a work of art: light, bright, full of greenery and so easy to spend time in that you almost forget you are in an airport at all. It is genuinely a joy to connect through.

But this time, we decided that simply admiring Singapore from the terminal windows was not enough. We wanted to leave the airport and finally see what the city was all about. So we checked in for three nights in Singapore before heading to the Maldives, and I am so glad we did.

Skyline Swims, Super Trees & City Buzz: 3 Nights In Singapore

Singapore turned out to be a brilliant place to start our escape. It feels safe, beautifully clean and incredibly easy to get around, yet it still has that unmistakable Asian character and buzz.

We stayed at The Clan, which I would absolutely recommend to my clients. It has that boutique, grown-up city feel, but it is also warm and welcoming. The rooftop pool quickly became our secret weapon against jet lag. There is something very special about slipping into the water early in the morning, looking out over the skyline as the city starts to wake up around you. It set the tone for each day and meant we always felt refreshed, even with the time difference.

The location of The Clan worked perfectly for us. We could step out and be amongst shops, cafés and all the everyday life of the city within minutes, and it was easy to hop on public transport when we wanted to go a little further afield.

One of the big “wow” moments of the trip was heading down to Marina Bay. Seeing that skyline for real, with Marina Bay Sands sweeping across the top and the water reflecting all those lights, felt like stepping into a postcard. It is one of those places where you cannot help but take too many photos.

We also spent time at Gardens by the Bay, which I absolutely loved. The Supertrees are incredible in the daytime, but once they light up it feels almost otherworldly. Wandering around under them as the sky darkens and then watching the light show is such a special experience. The Cloud Forest and Flower Dome were another highlight for me: cool, misty, full of lush greenery and viewpoints where you almost have to pinch yourself that you are in the middle of a city.

Raffles was another favourite. I love places with a story, and Raffles has that wonderful blend of colonial architecture, polished service and a slightly playful edge. Sitting there, with the colonnades and fans overhead and the famous nut shells being thrown on the floor, you really do feel like you have stepped into a different era, but without it ever becoming stuffy. It is elegant, but it knows how to have fun.

We spent our three nights wandering through different districts, enjoying the contrast between glossy skyscrapers, waterfront promenades, futuristic architecture and little pockets of older, more characterful streets. It felt like just the right amount of time for a first proper taste of the city: enough to get a feel for it, but not so long that we lost that sense of excitement.

Maldives Mood: Where My Heart Feels At Home

The Maldives is, quite simply, our happy place. This was our third visit, and every time we land there I am reminded all over again why I love it so much.

There is just something about the Maldives that gets under your skin. The colours of the water that never seem quite real, the powdery white sand that squeaks under your feet, the gentle, unhurried pace of island life and the warmth of the people. Each island has its own personality and rhythm and I love that you can match them so carefully to the kind of holiday you want.

I also hear so many myths about the Maldives being only for couples or “boring” for families, and I can honestly say: forget the rumours. If you choose the right island, there is something for everyone, whether you want water sports, proper spa time, live music, relaxed beach bars or just the chance to switch off completely.

It is one of my biggest selling destinations, along with Mauritius, and I genuinely enjoy the research and fine-tuning that goes into finding the perfect island and villa for each client. It never feels like a chore.

Raaya by Atmosphere: Beach House Chic With Our Own Pool

For this trip we chose Raaya by Atmosphere, and it turned out to be a brilliant fit for us. We stayed in a two-bedroom beach villa with a private pool and it really did feel more like our own beach house than a hotel room.

Having two proper bedrooms gave everyone plenty of space and a real sense of privacy, which makes such a difference on a longer stay. The living areas flowed straight out to our own pool and then down to the beach. I lost count of how many times we just padded out, coffee in hand, to watch the light on the water or wandered straight from the terrace into the sea. That rhythm of sleep, swim, relax, repeat became our daily pattern and I loved it.

One of my favourite little touches at Raaya was the bikes. Being able to cycle around the island, barefoot on the pedals, following sandy paths fringed with tropical greenery, stopping whenever something caught our eye, added a simple but joyful layer to the whole stay. It gave us that feeling of freedom you only really get when everything you need is close by and the pace of life is completely unhurried.

Spa Bliss & Beach Bars: My Kind Of Island Routine

The spa at Raaya was incredible. From the moment you step inside you feel cocooned and calm, and the treatments genuinely helped me unwind rather than just feeling like a tick-box on a holiday to-do list. After days spent in the sun, in and out of the sea, that time in the spa felt restorative in the best possible way.

Our go-to spot for sundowners quickly became Seb’s Shack. It has exactly the sort of laid-back, beach-bar feel I love, with a front-row view for sunset. We would wander down in the early evening, order a drink, and just sit there watching the sky slip from gold to pink and then deep orange, chatting about the day and feeling that lovely sense of having nowhere else to be. It is such a simple pleasure, but it might be one of my favourite parts of any island holiday.

Sushi, Cellos & Chill-House Beats: The Raaya Vibe

The food and overall atmosphere at Raaya by Atmosphere really stood out for me. It felt polished and considered, but never formal or stiff. There was a real sense of style to it all.

Ampersand was our favourite restaurant on the island. We went for the tasting menu and started with sushi and sashimi that were as pretty as they were delicious. What really made the evening unforgettable, though, was the live music. A fantastically talented musician called Dora played the cello alongside classic tracks and it created such a cool, unexpected vibe. It is one of those nights you replay in your mind long after you get home.

Even the buffet restaurant felt special. There was a different theme each evening, which kept things interesting and gave us the chance to try lots of different flavours over the course of our stay. The open views of the beach and sea from the restaurant made every meal feel like part of the holiday experience. There is something very calming about eating while looking out at gently rolling waves.

If I had to sum up the overall feel of Raaya, I would say it reminded me of a grown-up version of Ibiza, but dropped into the Indian Ocean. There was cool chill-house music drifting through the air, fabulous cocktails appearing as if by magic and that wonderful “barefoot beach luxury” feel throughout. It was stylish and sociable without ever being over the top. For me, it was exactly the right kind of vibe.

Dolphins, Sunsets & A Birthday I Will Never Forget

Of course, what really stays with you after a trip like this are those one-off, impossible-to-repeat moments.

For my birthday, we headed out on a dolphin cruise, and it was truly magical. We were lucky enough to encounter a huge pod of dolphins that swam alongside the boat, leaping and playing in the water around us. Standing there, watching them arc out of the ocean with nothing but blue all around, I felt so completely blessed. It was one of those rare moments where the whole world seems to slow down and you are just right there, in it, soaking it all up.

As part of our all inclusive, we also had a sunset cruise included, which felt like the perfect finishing touch. I do love a sunset anyway, but the Maldives seems to turn them into an art form. The sky shifts through every shade of gold, peach, pink and orange, the silhouettes of islands appear in the distance and the soft rock of the boat, mixed with the warmth of the evening air, creates the most peaceful end to the day.

Maldives Myth-Busting & Cool Twin-Centre Ideas

Because I sell a lot of Maldives holidays, I hear the same worries again and again. People ask if it is only for honeymooners, if they will be bored, or if there is anything for the kids to do. The truth is, it all comes down to choosing the right island. Some are very quiet and couple-focused, others are full of activities, water sports, snorkelling, diving, live music, beach bars and plenty to do. When you match the island to the person, that is when the magic really happens.

Many people instinctively twin the Maldives with Dubai, which is a great option if you love glitzy skylines, mega malls and the idea of heading out into the desert. But there are so many other combinations that work just as well, if not better, depending on your style. Dynamic Asian cities, cultural hubs or relaxed stopovers that break the journey and add a completely different flavour can all be woven into a Maldives trip.

For us, pairing the Maldives with Singapore was spot on. We had three nights of skyline swims, heritage hotels and foodie exploring, followed by days of chill-house beats, cocktails, spa time, cycling barefoot around a tiny island and watching wild dolphins in the Indian Ocean. City lights first, then desert-island vibes. It suited us perfectly.

If the Maldives is on your wish list, or you like the sound of twinning it with somewhere a little different, I would love to help. With this being our third visit and one of my biggest selling destinations, I can guide you through which islands and villas might suit you, whether to pair it with somewhere like Singapore, Dubai or an alternative stopover, and how to make the most of your budget while still getting that “pinch-me” feeling.

If you are dreaming of turquoise lagoons, cool beats, skyline pools and those heart-stealing Maldivian sunsets, just reach out to me and I will create a tailor-made Singapore and Maldives itinerary just for you.
