Are you thinking about a World Cruise?

Useful things to consider if you are going

Alison Butcher on 31 May 2026

For many travellers, an around‑the‑world cruise is the ultimate dream. But what should you think about before committing to several weeks or months at sea? As your personal Travel Counsellor here in Cheshire, I have pulled together a guide to help you decide if it could be your perfect adventure. Generally a “world cruise” is a longer sailing, often from 60 to 120 nights or more, visiting multiple continents and a wide range of ports. There are also “segment” options, where you join a portion of a world voyage and this might be a good starting point to see if it suits you. Around‑the‑world cruises tend to be a good fit if you: 1. Love the journey as much as the destination, enjoying slow travel, sea days and the rhythm of life on board, 2. Have the time and flexibility, often suiting retired travellers or those taking a sabbatical. It can suit people who can work remotely and are happy with shipboard internet. 3. Enjoy a sociable, club‑like atmosphere - world cruises build a real sense of community on board. If you enjoy meeting like‑minded people, shared dinners, quizzes, lectures and enrichment activities, you will probably thrive. 4. Prefer to travel in comfort with everything taken care of Longer cruises mean you are only unpacking once and you don't have to worry about flight connections and hotels. Meals, entertainment and a high level of service are built in. It may not be ideal if you struggle with sea days or are prone to severe seasickness If you prefer very independent travel and lots of unstructured time ashore with a fast‑paced itinerary and experiences every single day then I can help you explore other options, such as combining multiple shorter cruises, or creating a tailor‑made itinerary with land stays. If you feel a world cruise could be right for you, it is important to think carefully about a few practical points before you book. 1. How long do you really want to be away? A full world voyage is often 3–4 months or you could try a Grand voyages - covering regional itineraries (for example, Asia & Australia, South America & Antarctica) that might be 40–70 nights. Segments: 2–6 week portions of a longer world cruise We can talk through what feels manageable for you in terms of time, commitments and budget. 2. Choosing the right cruise line and ship. Not all world cruises feel the same. Things to consider: Style of ship: large resort‑style ships with lots of entertainment versus smaller, luxury or more boutique vessels On‑board atmosphere: formal or informal, traditional or contemporary, quiet and refined or buzzy and activity‑focused Included extras: some lines include drinks, gratuities, Wi‑Fi and excursions, others are more pay‑as‑you‑go Picking the right cruise line makes a huge difference to your overall experience, especially when you are on board for weeks or months. I can help match you to a ship and brand that suits your personality and expectations. 3. Budget and what is included A world cruise is a significant investment, but it can also offer excellent value when you consider how much is included e.g. Accommodation, meals, entertainment and enrichment plus all the on‑board facilities. You can then decide on drinks packages and speciality dining and shore excursions (and whether you prefer ship‑run tours or private options). There is usually an on‑board service charges or gratuities to budget in aswel. We can work together to create a realistic total budget, not just focusing on the headline fare. 4. Health, accessibility and medical support For an extended voyage, it is important to consider your health and comfort: Are you physically comfortable with longer walks, uneven ground and getting on and off tenders (smaller boats) in some ports? Do you have ongoing medical conditions that need regular support or medication - speak to your GP about this. Are you confident about managing seasickness, should it arise? Ships have medical centres, but they are designed for short‑term support rather than ongoing complex care, so having good travel insurance and realistic expectations is essential. I can help you check what is available on specific ships and discuss cabin locations that might be more comfortable if you are worried about motion. 5. Visas, documents and formalities A longer itinerary often involves multiple countries, which can mean: Different visa requirements Certain passport validity rules (often 6 months beyond the end of your trip) Possible vaccination recommendations depending on regions visited Many cruise lines help with this, but it is still important to understand what is required in advance. I can guide you through the official advice and ensure you feel fully prepared. 6. Staying in touch with home Check Wi‑Fi options and costs on board Plan how you will manage digital banking, emails and any work commitments Consider time zones if you need regular contact We can look at itineraries and ships that offer stronger connectivity if this is a key factor for you. 7. Cabin choice for a long voyage Balcony cabins can make the ship feel more spacious and give you fresh air and private outdoor space Suites offer extra comfort, lounging areas and sometimes added benefits like priority services and exclusive venues Mid‑ship locations can feel more stable in rougher seas Think about how you like to relax. If you enjoy quiet mornings with coffee on your balcony or private afternoon downtime, it may be worth investing in a higher‑grade cabin. Insurance and being away from home for longer One of the most important practical steps, and one that is often overlooked, is checking your insurance when you are travelling for an extended period: Travel insurance: You may need a policy specifically designed for longer journeys. Home insurance: Many home insurance policies have rules about how long your property can be left unoccupied before certain elements of cover are reduced or no longer apply. It is important to speak to your insurer so you understand any conditions, such as someone visiting the property regularly or specific security measures. Making these checks in good time means you can set off with peace of mind, knowing both your trip and your home are properly protected while you are away. Why a world cruise is often best as a package holiday For something as complex and valuable as an around‑the‑world cruise, booking it as part of a protected package holiday can bring extra peace of mind: Your cruise, flights, transfers and any pre‑ or post‑cruise stays can be booked together, making the arrangements more seamless If there are schedule changes or disruptions, it is much simpler to rearrange when everything is linked, rather than trying to juggle separate bookings You have the reassurance of financial protection on the overall package, plus my support to liaise with travel partners on your behalf This is one of the reasons many of my clients prefer to plan such a special journey with a Travel Counsellor rather than trying to put the pieces together themselves. How I can help you plan your world‑cruise adventure If you are starting to picture yourself watching the sun rise over a different horizon every few days, this could be your moment to explore the idea further. As your Travel Counsellor, I can: Talk through your travel style, budget and timeframe Recommend cruise lines and ships that suit you Help you compare full voyages vs shorter segments Build a protected package that might include flights, hotels and transfers around your cruise Guide you through documents, insurance considerations and the practicalities of being away from home for longer You will have one point of contact before, during and after your trip, rather than dealing with multiple companies and websites. Ready to start dreaming? An around‑the‑world cruise is not just a holiday, it is a life experience: weeks or months of discovery, friendships, sunsets at sea and stories you will be telling for years.
