Is now a good time to travel, given rising costs and events in the Middle East?
Alison shares her honest advice on whether now is a good time to travel,
This Blog covers how travel needs to adapt and respond to recent events. It includes some things to consider and some tips on how to plan your next holiday with me.
As your personal Travel Counsellor here in the beautiful city of Chester, I am often asked: “Is now really a good time to travel?” Rising fuel prices and ongoing conflict in the Middle East are dominating the headlines, and it is completely natural to feel unsure about booking your next holiday.
My role is to cut through the noise, give you balanced, up‑to‑date information, and help you make confident decisions that feel right for you.
In this blog I will explain what is happening, how it might affect your travel plans, and how I can look after you at every step.
What is happening with fuel prices and airfares?
Global fuel prices have risen, which has a direct impact on jet fuel costs. Since fuel is a significant part of an airline’s running costs, this puts upward pressure on ticket prices.
Airlines are reacting in a few key ways:
- Higher
base fares and surcharges
Many airlines are adding or increasing fuel surcharges, or building the extra cost into the fare. You may notice that the very lowest headline fares are less common, especially on popular long‑haul routes. - More
fees and fewer “free” extras
Some carriers are raising checked baggage fees or unbundling services that used to be included, particularly on long‑haul flights. - Rerouted
flights and schedule tweaks
To avoid conflict zones, some routes fly slightly longer paths. This can add a little extra flight time and fuel, and sometimes affects the range of departure times or connections available.
The key point is this: flying is absolutely still possible and in demand, but ultra‑cheap fares are harder to find and flexibility is more important than ever.
What about safety and the Middle East?
For many people, the biggest concern is not price but safety.
There has been ongoing tension and conflict in parts of the Middle East, which has led to:
- Restrictions or closures of certain airspace
- Government advice against travel to specific areas
- Some airlines adjusting routes to avoid higher‑risk regions
For UK travellers, the most reliable source of safety information is the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). They regularly update travel advice for each country and clearly state where they advise against all travel or all but essential travel.
What is important to understand is that:
- A small number of destinations are significantly affected and may not be suitable to visit at present, but
- The vast majority of the world remains open, welcoming visitors and operating normally, with the usual level of sensible caution and planning.
As your Travel Counsellor, I monitor this advice and airline updates and will always be honest with you if I believe a destination or routing is not a good idea at a given time.
So, is now a good time to travel?
In many cases, yes: it can still be an excellent time to travel, as long as your trip is planned carefully with current information in mind.
Here is how you might like to think about it:
Reasons you might still want to travel now
- Destinations
are ready and keen to welcome you
After years of disruption, many places have refined their visitor experience. Hotels, local guides and restaurants are focused on high levels of service, and in many areas you will find a very warm welcome. - There
is still good value to be found
Although average flight prices are under pressure, you can still find strong value by being a little flexible: travelling slightly off‑peak, considering different departure airports, being open to one stop instead of non‑stop, or exploring alternative destinations where your money goes further once you arrive. - Well‑planned
travel is safer and more supported than ever
Travellers today are more aware of insurance, protection and the importance of having expert support. When you book with me, you are not travelling alone with a confirmation email, you have a real person in your corner who can step in if something changes. - Your
wellbeing matters
Time away to recharge, reconnect with loved ones, celebrate a milestone or simply escape the daily routine can make a huge difference to your wellbeing. Travel can be a very positive, life‑enhancing choice, even in uncertain times.
When might it be better to pause or rethink?
There are situations where it may be wiser to adapt or delay your plans, for example:
- If the FCDO currently advises against travel to your chosen destination
- If your itinerary depends heavily on a region with regular disruption or rapidly changing advice
- If you have very limited flexibility on dates, connections or routing, and a very low risk tolerance
In those cases, I can help you explore alternative dates, routes or entirely different destinations that offer a similar style of holiday with less risk and more stability.
How rising costs might change the way we travel
Rather than stopping people from travelling altogether, current conditions are more likely to change the way we choose to travel:
- Fewer,
more meaningful trips
Instead of several short breaks, you might prefer one or two longer, really special holidays each year, making the most of every day away. - More
interest in travel that does not always rely on long‑haul flights
European rail, river cruises, coastal cruises, and self‑drive trips are becoming more popular. These can combine comfort with the pleasure of a slower journey. - Investing
in the moments that matter
If fares are higher, many people want the trip itself to feel genuinely memorable: beautiful hotels, private transfers, personalised tours or unique local experiences. - Season
and destination “swaps”
You might consider, for example, a Mediterranean island in May or October instead of peak‑summer long‑haul, or a different city that offers a similar vibe to one that is currently more affected by conflict.
I can talk you through these options and help you decide what would feel right for your budget, comfort level and style of travel.
How I add value to your travel plans right now
This is exactly the kind of environment where having your own personal Travel Counsellor makes a real difference.
Here is how I support you:
- I
keep an eye on travel advice and airline changes for you
I monitor official guidance and supplier updates relevant to your trip and explain, in clear everyday language, what it means for your plans. - I
design smart, “resilient” itineraries
That could mean avoiding certain routings, allowing extra connection time where needed, and choosing trusted partners who have proved they look after guests when plans change. - I
focus on value, not just price
By understanding what matters most to you (comfort, time, flexibility, experiences, style of accommodation), I can suggest options that feel worth what you are spending, not just the cheapest headline fare. - I
help you put proper protection in place
From the right travel insurance to financial protection on your arrangements where applicable, I help you ensure there are layers of support if the unexpected happens. - I
recommend the security of a package holiday wherever it makes sense
Booking your flights and accommodation together as part of a package can give you important extra protection and reassurance. If something changes with your flights or destination, it is usually far easier for me to step in, work with travel partners on your behalf and keep the different parts of your trip joined up. - I
am here before, during and after your trip
If advice changes, a flight is delayed or you simply have a query, you know exactly who to contact. You are not left queuing on a generic helpline.
Practical tips if you are thinking about booking now
If you are considering a holiday in the current climate, here are some sensible steps:
- Book
earlier than you might have done in the past
With fewer genuine “flash bargains” and strong demand for peak dates, it can pay to secure flights and key hotels sooner, especially for school holidays. - Build
in some flexibility
Where you can, consider refundable or changeable options, or be open to moving your dates by a day or two. That little bit of flexibility can open up better value or more convenient itineraries. - Choose
well‑connected destinations
Look at places with multiple routes from the UK, so you have options if an airline changes schedules. - Consider
a fully protected package holiday
In uncertain times, having your flights, accommodation and key services wrapped up in one protected package can offer extra peace of mind. If there are changes or disruptions, it is much simpler to rearrange when everything is linked together rather than lots of separate bookings. - Arrange
good travel insurance at the time of booking
This is more important than ever. We can talk through the kind of cover that is appropriate for your destination and circumstances. - Use
a trusted expert rather than going it alone
There is a lot of information out there, and not all of it is accurate or up to date. Working with a professional means you do not have to make sense of it all by yourself.
Bringing it all together
Yes, rising fuel costs and the conflict in parts of the Middle East are affecting the way the world travels. Airfares are under pressure, some routes are adjusted, and a small number of destinations are currently off‑limits or require extra caution.
But that does not mean you need to give up on your travel plans.
With thoughtful planning, the right destination choice, the added reassurance of a well‑designed package holiday and personalised support, it can still be a wonderful time to travel, create memories and enjoy the restorative power of time away.
If you are unsure whether now is the right time for your next trip, I would be very happy to talk it through with you. Together we can look at the latest advice, explore options that fit your budget and comfort level, and design a trip that feels both inspiring and responsible.
