Our Fiji Adventure: The Trip That Almost Beat Our Honeymoon

Some trips stay with you in a different way. You come home, unpack the suitcase, but the place is still quietly tugging at you weeks later. Fiji has done exactly that for us.

Both my husband, Shawn, and I have said, quite honestly, that it is up there with our honeymoon. It had that same mix of excitement and calm, those “is this really our life?” moments, and the feeling that time had slowed down so we could reconnect. I wanted to share a little about what we did, how it felt, and a few things I learned that might help if you are dreaming of your own Fiji adventure. We saw a few different sides of Fiji: mainland, islands, adults‑only calm, family‑friendly fun, and something a bit different at the end.

Our trip looked like this:

  • 1 night on the Coral Coast at Outrigger
  • 3 nights at Paradise Cove in the Yasawa Islands
  • 2 nights at Yasawa Island Resort & Spa (adults only) also in the Yasawa Islands
  • 1 night at Castaway Island (family‑focused) in the Mamanuca Islands
  • 3 nights on a Blue Lagoon cruise, visiting a new island each day

A soft landing on the Coral Coast

Outrigger on the Coral Coast gave us our first taste of those big South Pacific skies and swaying palms, but with the comfort of a larger resort: restaurants to choose from, a lovely pool, and a relaxed, friendly welcome.

We shook off the travel day with a dip in the adult pool and a walk along the beach. It felt like a deep exhale before the island‑hopping began.

Paradise Cove: house reef & manta magic

From there we headed to the Yasawa Islands and checked into Paradise Cove for three nights.

This was where Fiji really started to look like the postcards in my head. Think soft sand, ridiculously clear water and that amazing barefoot‑luxury feeling where you barely wear shoes for days.

The real highlight here was the snorkelling and the relaxed vibe. There is a house reef straight off the beach, so we could quite literally wander down from our room, slip into the water and be over coral and colourful fish within moments. The visibility, the colours, the warmth of the water: it was everything I’d hoped for.

We were also lucky enough to see manta rays. Gliding alongside those gentle giants in the wild was one of those spine‑tingling moments I know will stay with me for a very long time. No feeding, no touching, no tanks, just quietly sharing their space for a few minutes and then letting them disappear back into the blue.

It set the tone for the whole trip: simple, natural experiences that felt genuinely special.

Yasawa Island Resort & Spa: adults‑only escapism

After that, we dialled the serenity right up with two nights at Yasawa Island Resort & Spa, an adults‑only hideaway.

The soundtrack was waves and the clink of ice in a sunset cocktail and a feeling of genuine connection: from the moment we stepped on the boat which collected us from the South Sea Cruises transfer, it was clear how much the team cared, and by the time we left we felt we had gotten to know them.

Three experiences really stood out:

  • Exploring the Blue Lagoon Cave, which felt almost otherworldly as you swim in an open aired lime stone cave
  • A private picnic on a stretch of sand which was completely our own for a few hours. Just us, the sea, a cool box and a feeling that time had stopped for a little while.
  • Fijian dinner night, with delicious food and music shared in such an intimate setting. With only around 18 bures, it felt very exclusive, more like being welcomed into a small island community than staying at a resort.

I knew this place had got under my skin when I found myself with tears in my eyes as the plane lifted off from the island back to the mainland.

Castaway Island: easy, happy family time

From adults‑only calm, we switched gears and spent a night at Castaway Island, which has a lovely relaxed, family‑focused atmosphere.

This is the kind of place where you can absolutely picture children racing from the pool to the beach to the kayaks, making friends and collapsing into bed sun‑kissed and happy. It is very relaxed, very welcoming, and it feels safe and easy.

Even in a short stay we got a good feel for how well Fiji can work for families: warm, shallow water for paddling and first snorkels, plenty of activities, and a very laid‑back dress code where nobody minds if you turn up for dinner a bit sandy.

Even though the resort was fully booked, it never once felt crowded. It planted the seed for lots of future family trips in my mind.

Blue Lagoon cruise: unpack once, new island every day

We finished with something a little different: a three‑night Blue Lagoon cruise.

I loved this part of the trip. There is something so nice about unpacking once and then waking up each morning to a new view from your cabin window: another bay, another curve of white sand, another shade of blue water. Plus we got on with our fellow cruisers as well as the Blue Lagoon team really well which made the whole trip!

The atmosphere is very relaxed and intimate compared to big‑ship cruising. Think barefoot on deck, taking a coffee up to watch the islands slide past, and dropping anchor in quiet lagoons where you can take a small boat ashore to swim, kayak and relax.

It was the perfect way to end our time in Fiji, stitching together all those island scenes and giving us a sense of just how much there is to explore.

Why seeing wildlife in the wild matters to me

One thing that really stayed with me from this trip was how it felt to see marine life in its natural environment.

Watching manta rays and reef fish in the wild is completely different and so much better than seeing animals in captivity or in heavily controlled settings. There are no tricks, no shows, no crowds pressing in. You are simply a quiet observer for a few precious minutes, and then they glide away and carry on with their lives.

I love that kind of experience. It feels more respectful and more meaningful, even if it means you see less or have to be patient. For me, the most unforgettable wildlife moments are always the ones where the animals do not even seem to notice you are there.

Fiji is a brilliant destination if you value responsible, in‑the‑wild encounters.

Planning your own Fiji adventure

If you have made it this far, there is probably a little part of you that is already on a hammock in the Yasawas.

Fiji is one of those destinations that really rewards good planning: choosing the right combination of islands, working out how long to spend in each place, and timing your connections so the trip feels smooth and relaxing.

Having now done it myself, I would love to help you shape a version of this trip that is perfect for you, whether that means:

  • a romantic, honeymoon‑worthy escape,
  • a big family adventure with something for everyone, or
  • a once‑in‑a‑lifetime island‑hopping journey.

If Fiji is sitting on your wish list, get in touch and we can start turning it into a plan.
