A Venetian Escape: From Doubt to Deep Love for La Serenissima

How three days, a gondola ride and getting happily lost changed the way I saw Venice

Amy Want on 12 Mar 2023

Planning a trip to Venice can feel a bit overwhelming: everyone has an opinion, the photos look impossibly perfect and it is hard to know whether it will actually live up to the hype for you. I felt exactly the same before I went, and even during those first couple of days in the city. This blog is my honest take on how Venice slowly won me over and what made me fall in love with it, in case you are curious about going yourself.

There are some cities that you feel as much as you see. Venice is one of them. It is the soft lap of water against ancient stone, the echo of footsteps in hidden alleyways, and the surprise of turning a corner to discover yet another postcardperfect canal.

I will be honest with you: I did not fall in love with Venice straight away. In the first couple of days I wondered what all the hype was about. The crowds, the maze of streets, the feeling of not quite “getting it” yet. I could not understand why people came back to this city over and over again.

And then, on the third day, something shifted.

As I slowed down, wandered a little further and let myself get pleasantly lost, I started to see a different side of Venice: the charm, the quirkiness, and the quiet corners where life feels wonderfully simple. Squeezing through tiny walkways, noticing the graffiti on old brick walls, and realising that I felt genuinely safe and at ease here, I suddenly understood why so many people fall under Venice’s spell.

This is a Venetian escape that gives you time to move beyond first impressions and discover the city’s softer, more soulful side.

Arriving in Venice: First Glimpse of the Lagoon

Your journey into Venice sets the tone from the moment you arrive. As your boat transfer glides across the lagoon, the skyline appears: terracotta rooftops, slender bell towers and palaces that seem to rise directly from the water.

Check in to a characterful hotel close to the Grand Canal or tucked away in a quieter sestiere. Think high ceilings, Murano glass chandeliers and tall windows opening onto canals or courtyards. Drop your bags, draw back the curtains, and let that first “I am really here” moment sink in.

If, like me, you do not instantly “click” with the city, give it time. Venice rewards patience.

The Classic Venetian Experience: A Private Gondola Ride

You cannot come to Venice without experiencing it from the water. A private gondola ride is one of the most atmospheric ways to appreciate the city’s history and romance.

Imagine stepping into your sleek black gondola as the gondolier steadies the boat, then drifting away from the busy Grand Canal into quieter side waterways. Sunlight dances on the water as you slip under low stone bridges and past centuriesold palazzi. This is when you see Venice at its most intimate: washing strung between windows, locals chatting in doorways, hidden little courtyards you simply cannot spot from the main streets. Go at golden hour or early evening for the softest, most magical light.

A Venetian Icon: Bellini's at Harry’s Bar

After your gondola ride, one of those “only in Venice” moments is stopping at Harry’s Bar for a Bellini. It is simple but special: peach and prosecco in a place that feels steeped in stories. Sitting there with a chilled Bellini in hand, watching people come and go, felt like a little nod to all the travellers who have passed through Venice before me. It is a lovely way to pause, soak it all in and toast to finally being there.

Hidden Venice: The Moment It “Clicks”

For me, the turning point came when I stopped trying to tick off all the “mustsee sights and instead just wandered. Venice is not a city you conquer, it is a city you gently get to know.

On that third day I squeezed through narrow passageways that felt barely wide enough for one person, noticed snippets of street art on old walls, and stepped into little campi where children played, neighbours chatted and cats slept in sunny doorways. In those quieter moments I realised I felt safe, comfortable and completely myself. The city that had felt overwhelming suddenly became somewhere I could imagine returning to again and again.

Dinner to Remember: An Amazing Venetian Steak House

Venice is renowned for seafood, but one of my favourite evenings was in a small steak house hidden away from the main tourist streets.

Think exposed brick walls, candlelit tables and a menu full of tempting cuts of meat. A glass of fullbodied local red, a perfectly cooked steak, charred on the outside and tender inside, with simple sides like roasted potatoes, grilled vegetables or a rocket and Parmesan salad. It felt relaxed yet special and was a real highlight of the trip.

Wandering Venice: Getting Lost on Purpose

One of the greatest luxuries in Venice is time to wander with no fixed plan. Some of the best memories come from those unscripted moments: crossing a bridge just because the view looks lovely, browsing artisan shops selling masks and Murano glass, spotting tiny shrines in corners and paint peeling from colourful shutters, or listening to a busker’s violin as the light fades.

Venice is compact enough to walk almost everywhere, yet intricate enough that it feels like an endless treasure hunt. Getting delightfully lost is all part of the experience.

Elevating Your Venetian Escape

A few little touches can make your escape feel even more special: private boat transfers to and from your hotel where possible, a relaxed walking tour with a local guide, an evening aperitivo by the water, or a gentle day trip to islands like Murano and Burano. With a bit of thought, even a short break can feel like a true reset.
