Bordeaux: A City I'd Go Back to in a Heartbeat
A couple of years ago, I spent a long weekend in Bordeaux and completely fell in love with the city. From world-class wine and beautiful architecture to unforgettable experiences in Saint-Émilion, it's a destination that has stayed with me ever since, and one I'd happily return to tomorrow.
Some destinations stay with you long after you've returned home, and for me, Bordeaux is definitely one of them.
I visited a couple of years ago for a long weekend, and even now, it's a city I find myself recommending time and time again. In fact, it's firmly on my list of places I'd love to go back to.
From the moment I arrived, I could see why Bordeaux is considered one of France's most beautiful cities. The elegant architecture, vibrant atmosphere, riverside walks, and endless choice of cafés, restaurants and wine bars make it a destination that's easy to fall in love with. It has all the charm of a major European city but with a relaxed and welcoming feel.
One of the highlights of my trip was venturing out to the famous vineyards of Saint-Émilion. Rather than booking a private experience, I decided to join a small group tour. If you know me, you'll know that spending the day with a group of complete strangers isn't something that comes naturally, but I wanted to challenge myself and embrace the experience.
I'm so glad I did.
Our group was made up of people from all over the world, each with their own stories and reasons for visiting Bordeaux. What started as a slightly nerve-wracking experience quickly became one of the most memorable parts of the trip. Between vineyard visits, wine tastings and exploring the stunning medieval village of Saint-Émilion, there were plenty of opportunities to chat, learn about different cultures and share travel stories.
It was a great reminder that travel isn't just about the places you visit. It's also about the people you meet along the way.
Back in the city, I also spent some time exploring La Cité du Vin, Bordeaux's famous wine museum. Even as someone who simply enjoys a good glass of wine, I found it fascinating. The interactive exhibits brought the history, culture and global influence of wine to life, and it gave me a much deeper appreciation of the region's winemaking heritage. It's an attraction I'd highly recommend fitting into any Bordeaux itinerary.
Of course, the wine itself was exceptional too. Surrounded by rolling vineyards and some of the world's most renowned wineries, it's easy to understand why this region is so famous. Even if you're not a wine expert, the scenery alone makes the trip worthwhile.
Bordeaux exceeded my expectations. It's a city that effortlessly combines history, culture, fantastic food and world-class wine, all within a walkable and welcoming setting. Whether you're wandering through the historic centre, enjoying a glass of local wine along the waterfront, visiting the wine museum, or escaping to the nearby vineyards, there's something special around every corner.
Would I recommend a visit? Absolutely.
Whether you're looking for a romantic city break, a foodie getaway, or simply somewhere to slow down and soak up French culture, Bordeaux deserves a place on your travel wish list. And if you're thinking about joining that group tour, even if it feels a little outside your comfort zone, my advice would be simple: do it.
Sometimes the most rewarding part of travel is saying yes to something that scares you just a little.
Bordeaux is a city I'd return to in a heartbeat, and next time, I'll definitely be raising another glass in Saint-Émilion.
