Where to Go for Winter Sun: My Favourite Escapes to Chase the Sunshine

As soon as the darker mornings and colder temperatures arrive, I find myself dreaming about sunshine. The good news is that you don't have to wait until summer for your next holiday. Some of the world's most beautiful destinations are at their absolute best during the UK winter months.

November is my birthday month, so over the years I've often used it as the perfect excuse to escape the UK in search of some winter sunshine! Many of the destinations featured below, including Mauritius, the Maldives, Mexico and Cape Verde, are places I've personally visited in November, making them destinations I can genuinely recommend for a warm-weather getaway at that time of year. A few others are still sitting proudly on my travel bucket list.

Mauritius

I visited Mauritius in November/December and was blown away by how diverse the island is. One day you can be relaxing on a beautiful beach, the next discovering waterfalls, botanical gardens or local villages.

The weather was fantastic, with plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures, making it perfect for both relaxing and exploring.

Whilst many people think of Mauritius as a honeymoon destination, I was pleasantly surprised by just how family-friendly many of the resorts are too. With excellent kids' clubs, family pools, water sports and plenty of space for everyone to unwind, it's a destination that works just as well for families as it does for couples.

The genuine warmth of the Mauritian people and the high standard of hospitality across the island really stood out to me, and it's easy to see why so many visitors return year after year.

My verdict: Perfect for couples, honeymooners, families and anyone looking for a luxury escape with a little bit of everything.

Maldives

The Maldives is another destination I've personally experienced during November/December, and it really does live up to the photographs.

There's something special about waking up to crystal-clear turquoise waters and spending your days snorkelling, relaxing and enjoying the slower pace of island life.

Many people see the Maldives as a once-in-a-lifetime destination, but there are actually options available to suit a range of budgets and travel styles.

Whether you're celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary, milestone birthday or simply want some well-deserved relaxation, it's a destination that never disappoints.

My verdict: The ultimate destination for total relaxation and special celebrations.

Mexico

I visited Mexico in November and it completely exceeded my expectations.

The combination of beautiful beaches, fantastic all-inclusive resorts, fascinating history and incredible food means it's much more than just a fly-and-flop destination.

One day you can be relaxing by the pool, and the next exploring ancient Mayan ruins, swimming in crystal-clear cenotes or discovering vibrant local culture.

It's the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, making it ideal for travellers who struggle to sit still for an entire holiday.

My verdict: Great for couples, families and anyone wanting a mix of relaxation and adventure.

Cape Verde

Cape Verde is one of the destinations I've visited more than once, both in November and June.

One of the reasons I recommend it so often is the reliability of the weather. Whether you're looking for winter sunshine or a summer escape, Cape Verde offers warm temperatures throughout the year.

The islands are known for their beautiful sandy beaches, relaxed atmosphere and excellent value for money. Combined with a relatively short flight from the UK, it's easy to see why it's become such a popular choice.

My verdict: One of the best all-round winter sun choices for guaranteed sunshine.

Tenerife (Costa Adeje)

I've spent New Year in Costa Adeje and can personally confirm there's something quite special about welcoming a new year in the sunshine.

While friends and family were wrapping up in winter coats at home, we were enjoying blue skies, outdoor dining and warm evenings.

Costa Adeje offers a fantastic combination of beautiful beaches, excellent restaurants and great accommodation options, making it a brilliant choice for couples and families alike.

If you're looking for winter sunshine without the long-haul flight, Tenerife is hard to beat.

My verdict: Perfect if you want sunshine closer to home.

Barbados

Barbados has been on my travel bucket list for years.

With its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, laid-back atmosphere and famous Caribbean hospitality, it's easy to see why so many people return year after year.

From luxury beachfront resorts and water sports to rum tours and local culture, Barbados offers much more than just beautiful scenery.

Another reason Barbados appeals to me is that it's a fantastic starting point for a Caribbean cruise. Why choose just one island when you can experience several? Many cruise itineraries either begin or include Barbados, allowing you to combine a beach stay with the opportunity to explore multiple Caribbean destinations in one trip.

My verdict: A dream destination for anyone looking for classic Caribbean charm, or those wanting to combine a luxury beach holiday with an unforgettable Caribbean cruise.

Dubai

Dubai is another destination firmly on my bucket list.

Many of my clients have travelled there and returned absolutely loving the combination of luxury hotels, incredible dining, world-class attractions and year-round sunshine.

Whether it's a family holiday, a couples' escape or a stopover as part of a larger trip, Dubai continues to be one of the most sought-after winter sun destinations.

Thailand has long been a dream destination of mine.
