Christmas Time New York Style
4 Magical Nights in The Big Apple
Christmas in New York City: 4 Magical Nights in the Big Apple There are some trips that stay with you long after you have unpacked your suitcase, and Christmas in New York is absolutely one of them. Think twinkling lights on every corner, festive window displays that feel like theatre sets, the clang of subway trains beneath your feet and that unmistakable buzz in the air. I spent four nights in New York over the festive season, and it was every bit as magical as you might imagine. If you have ever dreamed of a Christmassy break in the Big Apple, here is a taste of what you could experience, and how I can help you plan your own perfect trip.
Day 1: First Glimpse of the Skyline & Times Square
Arriving into Manhattan in December feels like stepping straight onto a film set. As the skyline appears and the yellow cabs weave through the streets, you know you are somewhere truly special.
Once checked in, we headed straight to Times Square. Neon lights, giant billboards, steam rising from the subway grates and street performers on every corner: it is loud, chaotic and utterly iconic. At Christmas the energy somehow intensifies, with festive adverts, seasonal shows and visitors from all over the world stoping to soak it all in.
It is the perfect place to start a short break; a first taste of that New York buzz before you dive into the sights.
Day 2; History, Views & Opent -Top Adventure
No visit to New Yorks is complete without taking a moment to pause and reflect at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. the memorial pools, set in the footprints of the original Twin Towers, are incredibly moving, and the museum brings personal stories to life in a powerful, respectful way. It is an emotional eperience, but a very important one, and I always recommend allowing plenty of time here.
From there, we swapped quiet reflection for a different perspective on the city; an open-top bus tour. Wrapped up warm in our hats and scarves we rode through the streets with hot drinks in hand as our guide pointed out landmarks and hidden gems. It is a brilliant way to get your bearings, especially on a short stay, and the city feels extra special when you are cruising along under a canopy of Christmas lights.
As dusk falls, New Yorks skyline really comes into its own. we enjoyed sweeping views from Top of the Rock and later from the Empire State Building. Both offer something slightly different.
Top of the Rock gives you that classic view of the Empire State itself and Central Park
The Empire State Building delivers that old-school, movie-magic feeling of standing "on top of the world".
Day 3; Central Park, Hudson Yards & Christmas Sparkle
With a traditional horse and carriage ride seen in all the great movies we saw a small portion of Central Park. A great way to spend the morning wrapped up in the cold with the clear skies and views of the skyline peeking through the trees. Such a lovely contrast to the fast-paced streets just beyond the walls.
from there we made our way to Hudson Yard a newer part of Manhattan that feels sleek and modern, with great shopping, dining and comtemporary architecture. At Christmas the decorations are spectacular, and the whole area feels very polished and festive, perfect for a leisurely browse or a relaxed lunch.
In between sights, we did what real New Yorkers do, we rode the subway. It's all part of the experience, and once you have mastered the map, it is a quick, authentic way to get around the city.
Once the sun went down we took a trip to the rockefeller Center to take in one of best Christmas vibes in the city. The famous tree with its ice skating rink infront. Great to partake or just stand back and people watch, soaking up the festive spirit that is everywhere. It's a classic christmas activity to do if its your thing. Then turning around and watching the light and music display put on by Saks 5th Avenue, if that doesn't get you soaked in Christmas spirit and feeling immersed in the magic of it all, then I don't know what will!
The Grand Fiale; Radio City Music Hall & The Rockettes
To round off our trip, we treated ourselves to something truly special; the legendary Radio City Christmas Spectacular featuring the Rockettes
Walking into Radio City Music Hall feels like stepping back into a glamorous era of New York's past. The art deco interiors, the golden glow of the auditorium, the excitement in the air; it all builds beautifully before the show has even begun.
Then the curtain rises and you are swept into a festive world of dazzling costumes, precision choreography and feel-good Christmas music. The Rockettes' famous high-kicks are every bit as impressive in real life as they look on screen. It is joyful, nostalgic and the perfect finale to a Christmas stay in the city.
