South America in Two Weeks: A Family Adventure of Scale, Contrast and Wonder
Over the Easter holidays, we set off on an ambitious mission – to see just how much of South America we could experience in a two-week family adventure. What followed was a journey of extraordinary contrasts, unforgettable moments, and a powerful reminder of why this continent captivates so completely.
Buenos Aires – Energy, Culture and Character
We began in Buenos Aires, diving straight into the creative heartbeat of Palermo Hollywood, where we stayed at the effortlessly cool Home Hotel. After a 17-hour journey, a three-night city stay provided the perfect opportunity to reset and immerse ourselves in the rhythm of Argentine life.
A guided walk through Montserrat and San Telmo introduced us to the city’s layered history and unmistakable personality. Buenos Aires doesn’t whisper – it oozes attitude. Murals of national icons Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi dominate entire walls, while the pull of steak houses and tango halls creates a daily cycle of indulgence and movement.
Each neighbourhood revealed a different side of the city, making exploration feel endlessly varied and rewarding.
A highlight was a day trip across the Río de la Plata by high-speed hydrofoil to the charming Uruguayan town of Colonia del Sacramento. With its cobbled streets and colonial architecture, it felt like stepping back in time – a gentle contrast to the pulse of Buenos Aires.
We also ventured into the countryside for an overnight stay at Estancia La Bandada, where Argentina’s ranching heritage comes to life. Horse riding, warm hospitality and yet another extraordinary asado reminded us that here, food is not just plentiful – it’s exceptional. Quantity and quality go hand in hand.
Iguazú Falls – Nature at Full Power
From city life to raw nature, we flew north to Iguazú Falls – and for three days, we were simply in awe.
This vast network of 275 cascades, hidden within subtropical rainforest, is one of the most spectacular natural wonders on Earth. Experiencing both the Argentine and Brazilian sides allowed us to fully appreciate its scale and diversity.
Our first encounter along the Upper Circuit built anticipation with every step – the distant rumble growing louder until we reached the immense Devil’s Throat. Even knowing what awaited us, nothing prepares you for that moment. The sheer force and volume of water is overwhelming.
If that wasn’t enough, we then took to the water – a high-powered boat ride that charges through the rapids and straight into the base of the falls. Drenched, exhilarated, and laughing, it’s an experience best described as the world’s most powerful open-air shower.
Crossing into Brazil, we checked into the iconic Belmond Hotel das Cataratas, the only Brazilian hotel located within the national park. Beyond its elegance and charm, its true luxury lies in exclusivity – the ability to explore the falls in near solitude once the day visitors have departed.
Our stay coincided with a full moon, allowing us to join a rare night walk to witness the elusive “moonbow”. Standing there, watching this ethereal phenomenon form in the mist of the falls, was nothing short of magical – a moment that will stay with me forever.
The Pantanal – A Wildlife Experience Like No Other
At the halfway point, we were reminded just how vast Brazil truly is. A full day of travel – two flights and a four-hour drive – took us deep into the wilderness of the Pantanal.
Often overshadowed by the Amazon, the Pantanal is, in fact, South America’s greatest wildlife sanctuary – the world’s largest tropical wetland, teeming with life. To put it into perspective, it’s about the same size as England and Wales combined.
We chose Caiman Lodge for its strong conservation ethos, particularly its pioneering work with jaguars. What followed exceeded every expectation.
Within 40 minutes of our first safari, we encountered a jaguar mother and cub at remarkably close range, followed soon after by a mating pair. It set the tone for the days ahead – wildlife sightings here are not rare; they are abundant.
Capybaras, caimans, deer, tarantulas and the wonderfully odd giant anteater became part of daily life. And then there was the birdlife – astonishing in both variety and colour. Even as a self-confessed non-birder, it was impossible not to be captivated. Hyacinth macaws, in particular, were unforgettable.
Days were filled with canoeing, guided safaris and moments of quiet connection with nature, punctuated by more exceptional food and warm, genuine hospitality.
And then came the skies. With no light pollution, the Pantanal reveals a night sky in its purest form. The Milky Way stretched endlessly above us, with shooting stars providing a fitting finale to each day. It’s the kind of place that leaves a lasting imprint.
Rio de Janeiro – The Perfect Finale
Our final chapter took us to Rio de Janeiro, where we stayed at the Windsor Miramar overlooking Copacabana Beach.
Rio is alive in a way few cities are. From the moment we landed – greeted by a young boy effortlessly dribbling a football through the airport – to the energy of foot-volleyball games on the beach, the city breathes sport, rhythm and joy. Argentine tango and empanadas switch seamlessly to Brazilian salsa and açaí.
We explored the lush Tijuca Forest en route to Corcovado and the iconic Christ the Redeemer, before taking in the panoramic views from Sugarloaf Mountain.
For our grand finale, we took to the skies. A helicopter flight along Ipanema Beach and circling Christ the Redeemer provided a breathtaking perspective of this extraordinary city.
As I looked down at the crowds gathered below, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. With one child now at university and the other approaching A-levels, moments like these feel even more meaningful.
Final Reflections
This journey wasn’t just about ticking off iconic highlights – it was about experiencing the depth, diversity and emotion that South America offers in abundance.
From vibrant cities to untamed wilderness, from indulgent cuisine to soul-stirring natural wonders, this is a destination that gives generously and leaves you wanting more.
Most importantly, it gave us something far greater than a holiday – it gave us shared memories that will last a lifetime.
