Why multi‑centre holidays are the best way to make the most of your time away

Ann Long on 04 Jun 2026

If you are going to use your precious annual leave, you want it to really count, don’t you? That is where multi‑centre holidays come into their own. Instead of having to choose between a buzzing city break or a relaxing beach, or between an exciting safari or time by the sea, you can enjoy a bit of everything in one perfectly joined‑up trip. This is one of my favourite ways to plan holidays for my clients: they feel rich and varied, but still relaxed and easy.

So, what actually is a multi‑centre holiday?

In simple terms, it is a holiday where you split your time between more than one place. For example:

  • A few nights in a city, followed by a beach or island stay
  • Safari first, then a few days on the coast to unwind
  • A cultural city break paired with a nearby wine or countryside region

It is not about racing from place to place. The trick is getting the order, travel times and pacing right so it feels like a smooth journey, not a box‑ticking exercise. That is where I come in.

Why multi‑centre holidays make your time work harder

Multi‑centre trips are brilliant if you:

  • Get bored staying in one place for too long
  • Are going long‑haul and want to “make the most” of that flight
  • Travel with someone who does not want exactly the same things as you
  • Are planning something special and want it to feel like a proper journey

Instead of coming home thinking “we should have seen more”, you arrive back feeling like you have had two (or even three) holidays in one.

Classic combo 1: City & beach

If you and your travel partner are having the “culture vs sunbed” debate, this is the perfect compromise.

How it usually flows:

  • Start in the city: think street markets, little neighbourhood cafés, rooftop bars, museums and guided tours.
  • Finish at the beach: long, lazy breakfasts, pool time, spa treatments and sunset drinks.

Why it works so well:

  • You arrive with plenty of energy, so you can throw yourself into the city.
  • By the time you move on, you are ready to slow right down.
  • You only unpack twice, but the two parts of the trip feel totally different.

Behind the scenes I am looking at flight times, transfer distances and even check‑in/check‑out so that moving from city to coast feels as simple and stress‑free as possible.

Classic combo 2: Safari & coast

Safari is magical, but it is also full‑on: early starts, big emotions and lots to take in. Pairing it with time on the coast or an island is a lovely way to catch your breath afterwards.

A typical rhythm could be:

  • Safari first: sunrise game drives, sundowners around the fire, starry skies and the sheer thrill of seeing wildlife up close.
  • Then the coast: warm sea, fresh seafood, spa time, reading by the pool and slow, golden evenings.

Why people love it:

  • You get that “pinch me” safari experience and then space to properly relax.
  • It feels very special, so it is perfect for honeymoons and big celebrations.
  • You can play with the budget a bit between lodges and beach stays.

When I am putting this together, I look carefully at internal flights, transfer times, baggage rules and how many very early mornings you will have. The aim is that you never feel like you are spending half your holiday in airports.

Classic combo 3: Culture & wine region

If you love food, wine and a slower pace, combining a city or historic town with a nearby wine or countryside region is a dream.

How it often works:

  • Start with culture: galleries, historic buildings, neighbourhood tours, browsing local shops and people‑watching from café terraces.
  • Then head to the vineyards or countryside: wine tastings, long lunches, farm‑to‑table dinners, gentle walks and maybe a spa.

Why it is such a good mix:

  • You get the best of both worlds: the buzz of the city and the calm of the countryside.
  • Distances are usually shorter, so the whole trip feels very relaxed.
  • It is ideal for couples, small groups of friends or grown‑up family trips.

I take care of the details like private transfers between city and countryside, timing of any winery or restaurant bookings, and pre‑booking busy attractions so you are not wasting precious time in queues.

How I make multi‑centre holidays feel seamless

The real “magic” of a multi‑centre holiday is how well everything joins up. That is where having a personal Travel Counsellor makes a big difference.

When I design a trip like this for you, I will:

  • Help you choose the right mix
We chat about what you enjoy, your budget, how busy or chilled you want it to feel, who is travelling, and what is on your wish list. From there, I suggest combinations that genuinely suit you.
  • Put everything in the best order
I think about jet lag, energy levels and how you want to feel at the end of the trip. Often that means starting with the livelier part and ending quietly, but it can be tailored either way.
  • Sort out all the “in between” bits
Flights, trains, private transfers, ferries and internal flights can be fiddly if you are doing them yourself. I put it all together into one clear plan that makes sense and avoids awkward gaps.
  • Match your hotels or lodges to each stage
Maybe you want a chic little city hotel followed by a laid‑back beach villa, or a traditional lodge followed by a contemporary coastal resort. I choose stays that feel different but still very “you”.
  • Build in proper downtime
It is tempting to cram in as much as possible. I will gently suggest where to slow the pace so you still come home feeling rested.
  • Be there while you are away
If something changes or you decide you would like to tweak a plan, you are not on your own trying to fix it. You have me, already familiar with every part of your itinerary.

Is a multi‑centre holiday a good fit for you?

It might be worth considering if you:

  • Are planning a honeymoon or special celebration trip
  • Want to make a long‑haul flight feel “worth it”
  • Like the idea of variety but do not want any hassle
  • Love both exploring and relaxing, and do not want to choose between them

If that sounds like you, a multi‑centre itinerary could be spot on.

If you would like to chat through ideas for your own city & beach, safari & coast or culture & wine escape, just get in touch and I can start sketching out some tailor‑made options for you and your travel dates.
