Cunard for Families
Cunard isn’t always the first cruise line people think of for a family holiday, but it can be a fantastic choice for the right type of family.
Queen Anne, Cunard’s newest ship, is particularly popular with families and multi-generational groups. She feels contemporary, spacious and elegant, with Cunard’s signature White Star service running throughout.
But is this style of cruising right for families? In my experience, it absolutely can be.
Cunard has a more refined, timeless feel, but there is still plenty for children to enjoy on board. You’ll find swimming pools, theatre shows, sports courts, deck games and relaxed dining options including pizza and burgers alongside more formal restaurants.
Afternoon tea is a real highlight and often a surprise favourite for children, thanks to the sense of occasion and tradition.
The main thing to be aware of is that Cunard is not as heavily focused on children as mainstream family cruise lines. That said, this is exactly what appeals to many families, especially when travelling multi-generationally. It works particularly well for grandparents, parents and children travelling together, where everyone wants different things from their holiday but still wants to share the same experience.
The children’s clubs are well run and cover ages from 6 months to 17 years, with structured, supervised activities and experienced staff. Because there are usually fewer children on board, the atmosphere can feel calmer and more personal, with activities that are often more tailored. With smaller groups, staff also have more time to give individual attention, which many families really value.
We sailed Cunard with our daughter when she was 7 months old and had a genuinely lovely experience, and it really showed how well it can work for both families and multi-generational groups who enjoy a slightly more relaxed pace.
If you are looking for a more relaxed, refined cruise experience with time to enjoy the sailing as much as the destinations, Cunard can be a brilliant option.
If you prefer non-stop waterparks, very high-energy entertainment and a heavily child-focused environment, other cruise lines may suit you better.
