If you just want the short answer:

• Arvia – The newest ship with the biggest choice of dining, entertainment and family activities.

• Iona – Very similar to Arvia and my favourite choice for Norwegian Fjords cruises.

• Britannia – A more traditional cruise experience with a stylish, elegant feel.

• Ventura – Fantastic value and especially popular with families during the school holidays.

All four ships offer children's clubs, pools, entertainment, full board dining and the convenience of sailing from Southampton. The biggest differences are the atmosphere, layout and onboard experience.

P&O Arvia

Arvia is P&O Cruises' newest ship and, in my opinion, one of the best all-round family cruise ships sailing from the UK.

It feels modern, lively and has something for everyone.

Highlights include:

• SkyDome with its indoor pool and entertainment space

• High ropes course and mini golf

• A huge choice of dining, including favourites like 6th Street Diner

• Adults-only swim-up bar

• A bright, modern resort-style atmosphere

I'd recommend Arvia for:

• Families who want plenty to do onboard

• First-time cruisers

• Mediterranean and Caribbean cruises

P&O Iona

Iona is Arvia's sister ship, so you'll find many of the same features and a very similar atmosphere.

Where I think Iona really stands out is on Norwegian Fjords cruises. The scenery is incredible and the ship feels made for that itinerary.

Highlights include:

• SkyDome

• Spacious public areas

• Sports court for active families

• Excellent entertainment and dining

I'd recommend Iona for:

• Norwegian Fjords cruises

• Families with older children and teenagers

• Anyone looking for a modern cruise ship with plenty of choice

P&O Britannia

Britannia offers a slightly more traditional cruise experience while still being family friendly.

It's elegant, relaxed and has a lovely atmosphere onboard.

Highlights include:

• Beautiful central atrium

• Excellent theatre shows

• Great restaurants and bars

• A classic cruise ship feel

I'd recommend Britannia for:

• Families who prefer a quieter atmosphere

• First-time cruisers

• Mediterranean and European itineraries

P&O Ventura

Ventura may be one of the older ships in the fleet, but don't overlook her.

She continues to be a popular choice with families and often offers excellent value, particularly during the school holidays.

Highlights include:

• Family-friendly layout

• Children's clubs and entertainment

• Traditional cruise ship design

• Great value for money

I'd recommend Ventura for:

• Families looking for the best value

• School holiday sailings

• Repeat P&O guests

So, which would I choose?

If a family asked me which P&O ship I'd recommend, I'd usually start with Arvia or Iona.

They offer the most modern experience, the widest choice of dining and entertainment and are fantastic all-round family ships.

That doesn't mean Britannia or Ventura are the wrong choice. Far from it.

Sometimes the best cruise isn't about choosing the newest ship. It might be the itinerary you want, the dates that suit your family or simply finding the best value.
