You will know I usually write about family cruise lines, often packed with waterslides, kids' clubs and entertainment. Fred. Olsen is quite different, and that's exactly why I wanted to experience it for myself.

While it's not aimed specifically at families, children are welcome on two of the three ships and Fred. Olsen appeals to a surprisingly wide range of travellers. They're well known for their loyal following among older guests, but also attract more younger couples and solo travellers than you might expect. Their thoughtfully planned itineraries include smaller ports that the larger ships simply can't visit.

Borealis is an adults-only ship. Originally built for Holland America Line, she has a classic feel with elegant public spaces that have been thoughtfully refurbished.

Some of my favourite areas included the Fresco outdoor deck, perfect for enjoying a drink while watching the scenery, the Lido Pool with its clever retractable roof and The Botanical Room, which actually reminded me a little of Eden on Celebrity Apex. I certainly wasn't expecting that! The elegant Oriental Tea Room was another standout.

I was also impressed by the solo cabins. They're genuinely spacious and don't carry a single supplement, which I thought was a real positive for solo travellers.

Lunch in the main dining room was delicious. I chose seafood soup, sea bass and a chocolate orange dessert. Beer, wine and soft drinks are included with lunch and dinner, and gratuities are also included in the fare, making it easy to budget for.

The buffet also impressed me. Rather than searching for a table, you're greeted, seated and served drinks at your table, creating a much more relaxed experience.

Colours & Tastes, the speciality restaurant, looked beautiful and is somewhere I'd like to try in the future.

Most Fred. Olsen cruises sail from Southampton, Liverpool, Newcastle and Rosyth, with a smaller selection of fly-cruises available too. There are also plenty of shorter itineraries for anyone wanting to try the cruise line for the first time.

One thing that really stood out during my visit was the incredible loyalty of Fred. Olsen's guests. Many return time and time again, which says a great deal about the experience the cruise line offers.

While my own holidays are likely to be spent on larger family-focused ships for a good while longer, I can absolutely see why Fred. Olsen has such a devoted following. It's a very different style of cruising, with the focus on the destinations, attentive service and a relaxed atmosphere.
