Our First Family Asian Adventure: Why Sri Lanka Is Our Happy Place
Sri Lanka has been special to us for a long time, but this was our first time going back as a family with the boys in tow and my parents, and our first proper family trip to Asia. I wasn’t nervous about the long journey or the heat, I just had this gut feeling they would love it as much as we do.
We flew direct with SriLankan Airlines, which worked really well for us. There are indirect options too, but we decided to just get the flight done in one go. The boys actually travelled brilliantly and were great on the flights, which set the tone for the rest of the trip.
It was everything I hoped for and more. This trip reminded me exactly why Sri Lanka is my happy place.
One thing that made a huge difference was having a private driver from start to finish. It made the whole trip feel seamless and took all the stress out of moving around. We could be completely flexible with timings and stops, the boys had a comfy vehicle for the slightly longer drives, and there was always something to watch out of the window. We could stop for comfort breaks whenever we needed, which with children and grandparents is priceless.
Easing in: a night in Negombo
We started gently with a night in Negombo to break up the long flight. No longer transfers, just: land, short drive, shower, sleep, swim, food. It took the pressure off completely and made the next day feel like the real beginning of the holiday rather than a slog.
Tangalle: wild coast and a soft landing
From there we drove down to Tangalle where we stayed at the beautiful Uga Prava property, a small seven‑suite hotel that felt both intimate and quietly luxurious.
Tangalle is one of my favourite spots on the south coast: rugged, natural, dramatic waves and big skies. Not every beach is swimmable, but that is part of its character. We mixed:
- Walks on almost‑empty stretches of beach,
- Rustic shacks and little local places to eat,
- The comfort of coming “home” to a beautiful hotel with genuinely kind, attentive staff – I think this was my fave hotel of the trip
It was the perfect soft landing for the boys’ first time in Asia: relaxed, beautiful and not overwhelming.
Yala: our first safari together
Next: Yala National Park and two nights at Uga Chena Huts. We were all excited for our first safari experience together. I know leopard sightings are never guaranteed, but I was secretly hoping we might be lucky enough to spot one.
Yala is stunning: lush parkland that suddenly opens onto wild coastline. On our afternoon safari we were lucky enough to see a leopard, tusked elephants, plenty of other elephants, crocodiles, buffalo and incredible birdlife. It really did not disappoint.
The boys loved it. They coped brilliantly with the drives and were totally absorbed in watching real wildlife, not just pictures in a book. Staying somewhere that blends comfort with that “in the wild” feeling made it all feel special but still very manageable with children.
Villa time: space, washing machine & local life
After safari we slowed right down with a villa stay on the south coast, in Midigama, travelling with my parents. This mix of hotels and a villa worked so well for a multi‑gen trip.
We suddenly had:
- Space to spread out and just be,
- A washing machine (un‑glamorous but absolutely essential at this stage!),
- Proper AC for naps and quiet time in the heat,
- A short walk to local cafés, bars and restaurants.
Midigama has such a chilled, local, surfy vibe that it was easy to fall into a rhythm: beach, pool, something simple to eat, repeat. I popped over to see Cape Weligama one day too: a gorgeous luxury property on the headland that really impressed me from a work point of view and was promptly added to my list of places I would come back to.
We had five nights here and honestly could have stayed longer.
Unawatuna & Galle: full circle
Then came Unawatuna, which is full of memories for us. It is where we used to base ourselves, and where we gathered family and friends before our Sri Lankan wedding 10 years ago.
Coming back with the boys and my parents felt emotional in the best way. We used it again as a base: easy beaches nearby, lots of places to eat, and Galle just a short hop away. Walking them around Galle Fort, along the ramparts and through the little streets, felt like sharing a piece of “our” story with them.
Ending well: Jetwing Blue near the airport
For the final two nights we stayed at Jetwing Blue, only about 20 minutes from the airport. After a busy trip, this was exactly what we needed: pool, beach, cool rooms, simple local dinners and no stress about a long final transfer.
Why I’d take a family to Sri Lanka again in a heartbeat
If you are wondering whether Sri Lanka will “work” as a first family trip to Asia, my honest answer has always been yes, absolutely. It is all about planning the right trip for you, there are so many ways to do this trip depending on who is travelling and what is important to you. That is where I can help make it easy and stress free:
- Choose flights that suit your family, whether that is direct as we did or with a stop,
- Choose the right locations depending on the time of year and plan the pace just right
- Have a dedicated driver so you can be flexible and comfortable,
- Mix hotels with somewhere spacious like a villa,
- Keep transfers sensible,
- Make sure you always have a cool, comfortable space to retreat to.
The value for money is fantastic, the people are incredibly warm, and you can fit wild coastline, safari, culture and proper downtime into one trip.
For us, it felt like coming home to a place we love, but seeing it again through the boys’ eyes and sharing it with my parents at the same time. That is the magic of Sri Lanka for me, and why it will always be my happy place.
