A dog friendly break in Wales
Snowdonia National Park
About Me, Your Travel Counsellor I am Becky, your personal Travel Counsellor, and I am passionate about creating holidays that feel as individual as the people taking them. As a busy mum (and devoted dog mum too), I know how precious your time away is, and how important it is that every member of the family is considered, right down to the four‑legged ones. I specialise in crafting tailor‑made breaks that are full of memories, not stress: from UK lodge escapes and dog‑friendly adventures to multi‑centre journeys and long‑haul getaways. This recent trip to North Wales with my little family and our puggle, Bruce, is a perfect example of the kind of real, relaxed and joy‑filled holidays I love to help my clients experience.
As a family who loves to travel, we are used to the excitement that starts as soon as the suitcases come out. For Bruce, our 10‑year‑old puggle, that excitement has usually been mixed with sulks. He knows all too well that the suitcases often mean he is being left behind.
This time, though, it was different. We decided it was only fair to plan a proper family holiday and take him with us. North Wales, with its mountains, lakes and endless walks, felt like the perfect choice for a dog‑friendly escape

Our Base: Pen Y Garth Lodges, Lake Bala
We stayed at Pen Y Garth lodges near Lake Bala, which turned out to be the ideal base. Tucked in a peaceful setting with beautiful views, it gave us that “away from it all” feeling without being remote.
One of the things I loved most was how central it felt. In around 45 minutes in almost any direction, we could reach the places we wanted to visit. It meant each day could be completely different, but we never had long car journeys with a child and a dog in tow.
Bruce settled into lodge life instantly. From snoozing on the decking after a walk to watching the world go by, he very quickly decided this was exactly the kind of holiday he approved of.
Discovering Bruce’s Love of Water at the National White Water Centre
Before this trip, Bruce really wasn’t keen on water. Puddles were to be walked around, not through, and the idea of a swim would have been laughable.
All that changed when we visited the National White Water Centre. We didn’t go rafting ourselves this time, but we walked along the rapids trail instead. The setting was surprisingly peaceful in between the surges of water, with just enough excitement from the rushing river to keep things interesting.
There is a lovely little play park for children and a café where you can sit with a coffee and watch the water thunder past. It is a great spot to simply soak up the atmosphere, and for us it was where Bruce had his big “breakthrough”.
Somewhere between paddling at the river’s edge and watching the rapids, our water‑shy puggle transformed. Suddenly we couldn’t get him out of the water. He paddled, splashed and pottered around as if he had been doing it his whole life. It was one of those simple holiday moments that stays with you.

Betws‑y‑Coed: Forests, Mountains and Swallow Falls
Another highlight of our trip was spending time around Betws‑y‑Coed. This village is one of those places that feels like it has been dropped into the middle of a storybook. Surrounded by forest and mountains, it is all mossy stones, tall trees and the sound of water in the background.
We visited Swallow Falls, which turned out to be the best £2 per person we spent all trip. It is dog friendly, so Bruce could come along and take it all in with us. The falls themselves are beautiful, powerful and endlessly watchable. You can easily spend time just standing, listening to the roar and taking photos.
From there, we walked the Dinas path, with more woodland scenery and river views. It is the kind of walk that feels very “North Wales”: lush greens, rushing water and little glimpses of mountains in the distance. For families with a dog, it is a lovely way to spend a few hours without being too challenging, but still feeling like a proper adventure.

A Perfect Day at Cwm Idwal, Snowdonia National Park
My favourite day of the holiday was our hike at Cwm Idwal in Snowdonia National Park. It felt like a real little expedition, but one that was still manageable for us as a family.
We began by scrambling up through the gorge, which made the start of the walk feel exciting and different. Bruce was in his element, clambering over rocks and trotting ahead to check the way. As we followed the path around the cwm, the views opened out to reveal dramatic cliffs, waterfalls tumbling down the mountainsides and the lake sitting quietly below.
The circular route is around 5 km, and every section offered something to enjoy: rugged mountain scenery, quieter stretches of path and plenty of spots to pause and take it all in.
We stopped part way round for a paddle and a picnic. Feet in the water, Bruce splashing happily, sandwiches in hand and the Snowdonia peaks towering around us: it was one of those simple, perfect family moments that sums up why I love this part of Wales so much.

Why North Wales Is Wonderful for Dog‑Loving Families
Looking back on our break, what stands out is how easy and natural it felt to include Bruce in everything we did.
North Wales lends itself beautifully to dog‑friendly family travel:
- Plenty of scenic walks that can be tailored to different abilities
- Lakes, rivers and waterfalls to paddle in and photograph
- Dog‑friendly attractions and paths like Swallow Falls
- Peaceful bases such as lodge stays, where you have your own space and can truly relax
For us, it was not just a holiday in Wales, it was a chance to make new memories as a complete family, four paws included. Watching Bruce go from water‑shy to water‑obsessed, seeing our child scrambling up rocky paths and paddling in clear streams, and ending each day tired but happy back at our lodge is something I would recommend to any dog‑loving family.
If you are thinking about a UK break where your dog is as welcome as you are, a lodge stay around Lake Bala with days out in Snowdonia National Park is a fantastic option.
