Hiking, Gorges and Greek Luxury: My Escape to Kalamata

GRECOTEL FILOXENIA KALAMATA

Becky Miles on 17 May 2026

I took part in a Charity hike for St Catherine's Hospice to reach the summit of Mount Taygetos, 2407m above sea level. I stayed at the Grecotel Filoxenia.

A peaceful luxury base: Grecotel Filoxenia

My base for the trip was the stunning Grecotel Filoxenia, set right on a beautiful pebble beach with the dramatic Taygetos mountains rising behind. The overall vibe is relaxed, peaceful and quietly luxurious: the sort of place where you instantly drop your shoulders a couple of inches the moment you arrive.

Days started with that soft early‑morning light over the mountains and the sound of the sea just a few steps away. The hotel’s design and gardens make the most of its setting, so wherever you are you feel connected to the landscape. It never felt busy or crowded, just calm and spacious.

The staff really made the stay special. They were genuinely friendly and absolutely exceptional: warm, attentive and always ready with a smile or a helpful suggestion. It felt like they were as proud of the region as they were of the hotel, which added a lovely personal touch to the whole experience

Discovering the Ridomo Gorge

One of the highlights of my trip was a 5 km hike through the Ridomo Gorge. Although I love being outdoors, I had never tried rock scrambling or climbing before, so this was definitely a step outside my comfort zone.

Ridomo Gorge is vast, wild and incredibly beautiful. It is actually one of the largest gorges in Greece, yet it remains relatively unknown, which meant that on the day we visited we were the only obvious tourists there. That sense of untouched nature made the experience feel very exclusive and authentic.

You do need a guide for this hike, and we were lucky enough to have George and Sam. They were fantastic: encouraging when the route felt challenging and full of stories, history and fascinating facts about the area. With their support I found myself doing sections I would never have imagined tackling, and came away with a real sense of achievement as well as some brilliant memories.

Think narrow stone passages, towering rock walls and moments where you simply stop, look up and feel very small compared with the landscape around you. It was one of those experiences that reminds you exactly why travel is so rewarding.

Climbing Mt Taygetos: from forest trails to snow

On the final day we set off early to tackle Mt Taygetos, aiming for the summit at 2,407 metres. This was a real challenge, but also the most rewarding part of the trip.

The lower section of the hike winds through forest, with the incline quickly making itself known in your legs. The air felt cool and fresh, filled with the sounds of birdsong, rustling trees and the distant rush of water. Every so often we would come across natural waterfalls, mossy rocks and clear streams that looked like something from a fairy‑tale.

We stopped for lunch at the mountain refuge, perched with glorious views stretching out over Sparta. Sitting there with a simple meal, looking down at the landscape we had already covered, was one of those perfect “pinch me” travel moments.

As we approached the summit the terrain changed dramatically. The forest thinned out, the landscape opened and suddenly we were walking through sections of snow, in places up to four feet deep. To have left the beach that same week and now be crunching through snow on a Greek mountaintop felt surreal and utterly spectacular.

The final stretch to the top was demanding but unforgettable, with sweeping views and a real sense of being high above the world. It is the kind of climb that tests you physically, then rewards you a hundred times over with what you see and feel at the top.

Why Kalamata is perfect for soft adventure and relaxation

What I loved most about this trip was the balance. In just a few days I:

  • Relaxed in a peaceful, luxury beachfront hotel with mountain views.
  • Challenged myself in a hidden gorge with expert local guides.
  • Hiked to a snow‑topped summit with views across Sparta and the Peloponnese.

Kalamata is ideal if you are looking for more than just a beach break. You can wake up to the sound of the sea, enjoy slow, sun‑drenched mornings by the water, then head out into the mountains for real, uncrowded adventures that feel wonderfully authentic and wild.

If you would like to experience Kalamata for yourself, with the right balance of luxury, hiking and soft adventure, I would be delighted to tailor a trip that matches your pace and comfort level.
